Felt the same about Noel Edmonds and Bruce Forsyth (and Jim Davison) @Somethingweirdisgoingon

I have saw Kevin bridges 3 times and loved him each time he's one comedian I can watch over and over again and laugh like the first time I saw him

Agree. I'm not a big fan of stand ups in general but like Kevin Bridges and Micky Flanagan. A few I find okay like John Bishop.

I find the more popular they are the less I like them. Gervais and Kay I love their sitcoms but can't watch their stand up. The likes of Mcintire and Russell Howard are terrible.

BeeBeeBeeBeeBee · 06/10/2023 09:31

I’d have also added Frankie Boyle to my list, but I did find him funny on the last series of Taskmaster.

Billy Connolly

Yep, far too much swearing detracts from the performance. I don’t mind the odd bit of swearing in a sketch but Billy took it too far imo.

Gnomegarden32 · 06/10/2023 09:33

Cannot believe someone mentioned Bill Bailey. Saw him a few years ago and have never laughed so much in my entire life.

As for unfunny, agree with lots of the ones mentioned here:

Miranda
Sarah Millican
French and Saunders
Sarah Pascoe
Katherine Ryan (really like her as a person though)
Pretty much all the famous male comedians except Dara O'Brien and Dylan Moran who were great live. Also saw Rory Bremner back in the day and Ross Noble who were both very funny.

Cattenberg · 06/10/2023 09:38

Michael Barrymore seemed to be massively popular in his day, but I didn’t get him at all. He just seemed to jump about pulling faces, and take the piss out of his guests.

TheHappyCarrot · 06/10/2023 09:39

Paul Sinha is not a comedian surely.

Sarah Pascoe and Rosie Jones are both awful.

Robotalkingrubbish · 06/10/2023 09:40

It’s interesting how many of the same comedians are mentioned on here. Is it just Mumsnetters, or representative of the rest of the population?

Poppercorn · 06/10/2023 09:41

Why on earth did someone say James Acaster is popular with Incels?!

Not my cup of tea:
Miranda
Mrs Brown's Boys
Jack Whitehall
Suzi Ruffell
Vic Reeves

As for women in comedy, I think the following and their work (not necessarily stand up) have all made me proper belly laugh:
Michaela Coel - brilliant writer, the best and I've watched both her series several times but 'Chewing Gum' makes me chuckle so much - a Caroline Aherne contender.
Ruby Wax
Sarah Silverman
The women of SNL especially Kristen Wiig (I've seen 'Bridesmaids' at least 6 times) and Tina Fey
Joan Rivers
The 'Famalam' actors - the aunties are brilliant
The Motherland crew
Sharon Horgan
Shazia Mirza - fearless and great live.
Saw Rhonda Cameron years ago she was great but not seen her for a while.

He does stand up ,,,,but I've never seen his act
He was on that show "Growing Pains" as a guest , cannot remember how funny he was though.

Should I undress before I jump on the LNER from Leeds or after??!

Beansinyourears · 06/10/2023 09:47

CurlewKate · 06/10/2023 09:48

I do like Suzie Ruffell, Jen Brister, Sindhu Vee, Hannah Gadsby, Mae Martin and Lucy -can't remember her name-Jon Richardson's partner. Izzy Suttie.

Stewart Lee is a interesting one. I think if you get him he's really funny to you. If you don't, he isn't and never will be.

I'm mildly amused by Phil Wang-but his book talking about being half Malaysian and what his life is/was like living between two cultures is absolutely fascinating.

Mothership4two · 06/10/2023 09:52

Don't be ridiculous @Sidebeforeself wait till you get to Buck House

thebellagio · 06/10/2023 09:55

I love stand-up comedy and panel shows

I've found that watching Taskmaster has completely turned my opinions of some comedians - for example, I couldn't stand Lucy Beaumont before but I think she's quite endearing now, and I also transformed my opinion of Sarah Millican - before, I thought she was a one trick pony. But then watching Mae Martin and Frankie Boyle was just painful.

But the only two that I will always turn off if they are on the TV are Nish Kumar and Rosie Jones - both horrendously unfunny.

My favourite stand-ups are without a doubt Dara - if you see him live, the way he can revert back to a throwaway line said by an audience member at the start of the show, is seriously impressive.

I also love Greg Davies for his storytelling and Peter Kay's "my mum needs a bungalow" tour was possibly comedy perfection. But with that, we saw him live on his last tour (the one before he cancelled and disappeared for a decade), and he didn't come across as a pleasant man. But I do still think Pheonix Nights and Car Share are TV perfection.

I've also seen Jack Whitehall a few times and loved him,

Sarah Millican
Sara Pascoe
Michael Macintyre
Lenny Henry
Jason Manford
Roy Chubby Brown
John Bishop

pp have mentioned Caroline Quentin and Jonathan Ross, they’re not comedians!

I know Caroline Quentin is an actor and not a stand up, but she seems to find herself hilarious. I often wonder if she’s ever been to the Sistine Chapel.

But she’s not a comedian so why even mention her? I’m not a huge fan but I wouldn’t even have thought to mention someone who isn’t a comedian. Bit strange.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 06/10/2023 10:11

Michale Herbing (aka Bully / Bullyparade). Directed various successful films (such as the Shoe of Manitou), currently does some sort of TV show about comedians getting each other to laugh. His works are more common in German speaking areas (not so much in the UK or US. Lucky bastards!)

The humour (especially the older films) is very often quite... Well, of a time. "haha, gay" - kind of humour.
Which is not even the main issue here!

I dislike it because I find it genuinely boring. It´s just so brainless and annoying! And one can spot the "supposed" jokes a mile away.

Even the current TV show (which is very much adapted to modern sensibilities) is horrible. Having to sit through one episode honestly felt like some form of very weird and specific punishment.

I told DP that he will have to watch this stuff alone. 😂

SpikyHatePotato · 06/10/2023 10:14

Johnny Vegas. Apparently he's a lovely chap, but the shouting the same thing over and over - so annoyingly unfunny

KimWexlersPonyTail · 06/10/2023 10:18

Nish Kumar is dreadful, plus that woman who was on the Mash Report, grins a lot...

Since the thread is about comedians (not specifically stand ups) and she is an actor in comedy shows.

Unless you think winning British comedy awards early in her career makes her not a comedian?
