I hate comedians where it feels like there's a real mean streak in their work, so Frankie Boyle and Bill Hicks, and Ricky Gervais can cross into this as well.

'Surreal' comedy can also get in the bin, sorry Vic and Bob and The Mighty Boosh...

Since the thread is about comedians (not specifically stand ups) and she is an actor in comedy shows.

Unless you think winning British comedy awards early in her career makes her not a comedian?

If this is a hill you really want to die on at least know your onions!

Other winners of this particular category (Top TV Comedy Actress) include Joanna Lumley, Stephanie Cole, Brenda Blethyn and Jean Boht. They are actors who were good in a particular comedy role, nobody would ever class these actors as comedians, just the same as CQ. Her wiki page even says she’s an actress, presenter and broadcaster.

SabrinaThwaite · 06/10/2023 11:00

Yes, it’s a hill I’m going to die on 🤣 - mainly because I have such an utter dislike of her. Her agent calls a big name in British comedy so that’s good enough for me.

Cocolapew · 06/10/2023 11:12

I've just discovered a new one (to me) Jeff Arcuri, he's an American stand up. His crowd work is so quick and witty, he's also strangely endearing 😄.
He makes fun of the audience but never crosses the line to being nasty or cruel.

Sarah Pascoe
Josh wittingham or whatever his name is.

And the worst... Ed Gamble. Hes a vile human.

Liz Truss
Kwasi Kwarteng

Ha ha ha

bluebell34567 · 06/10/2023 11:41

Michael McIntyre.
his voice and everything. insufferable. how can he get to do shows?

bluebell34567 · 06/10/2023 11:46

Romesh Ranganathan is insufferable, too.

I used to love Kenny Everett. I watched the Kenny Everett Show every week. I have a recording of Michael Parkinson interviewing him that I will watch later.

Jack Whitehall is brilliant live. We saw him in Leeds a few years ago when one of the props caught fire. I thought it was part of the act but apparently it wasn't. He ad libbed through it so smoothly.

I love Matt Berry in comedy roles. He was so funny in Toast of London and Toast of Tinsel Town.

I agree with most of the comments, but anyone saying that Morecambe and Wise weren't funny needs to wash their mouth out. Their comedy has dated a little, but their Christmas shows were just brilliant.

I have seen Russell Howard and Bill Bailey live and they were brilliant. They don't need to swear or be crude to be funny. I love Billy Connolly, and Ross Noble used to be funny on panel shows. Milton Jones's one liners are funny on panel shows, but I would find a while evening of one liners a bit wearing.

I've seen Russell Howard and Milton Jones live. RH was good. I love MJ. Tbh, it wasn't an evening of the one liners. Not at all. He wove it all through a whole story which built to an unexpected ending. It was very clever and very funny.

RampantIvy · 06/10/2023 12:16

Ooh, that sounds like it was a good show @Bbq1. His one liners had me in stitches on Mock the Week. How I do miss that show.

A vile human? Please tell me he has done to make him vile? Being a comedian not to your taste doesn’t make him vile.

CurlewKate · 06/10/2023 12:36

What's vile about Ed Gamble?

Bbq1 · 06/10/2023 13:10

I like Ed Gamble and James Acaster. It's so nasty to call someone a vile human being because you don't enjoy their comedy. Being a comedian is a job like any other.

PicturesOfDogs · 06/10/2023 14:29

I agree with Nish Kumar, he’s another annoying one.

Might just be me, but I find it annoying when comedians go all political.

They’re not funny with it though, just saying the Tory’s are shit, or Matt Hancock’s a prick and laughing after isn’t funny to me, just feels like someone ranting.
I want to hear jokes, not rants!

SuprisingHorse · 06/10/2023 14:34

Comedy is hugely subjective - what I find funny you may not. What you find funny I may not. That doesn't mean that one is "bad" or "good" but just not to my taste.

Except Mrs Browns Boys. Which is horrendous.

PosyPrettyToes · 06/10/2023 14:37

Michael Macintyre - he's just NOT FUNNY. "you know traffic jams? Ha ha ha! Boring aren't they? Ha ha ha ha ha!"

Lucy Beaumont - being terminally dull is not comedy
Jason Manford - insufferably smug
Any of the misogynist shock comics - Russell Brand, Jim Davidson etc

Clawdy · 06/10/2023 14:44

I liked Kenny Everett until he appeared at a Young Conservative Party conference shrieking "Bomb Russia!" and yelling about Michael Foot, Labour politician. The YCs were bellowing with laughter, applauding him, and I found it pathetic.

I agree with all of this.

Blackcountryexile · 06/10/2023 15:01

Rosie Jones and Tom Allen.

HurrahWuff · 06/10/2023 15:11

That guy with dark hair on the baking show... not even slightly funny in anything!

CurlewKate · 06/10/2023 15:25

I do wish people wouldn't pretend not to know the names of the comedians they've watched enough to know they don't like. Very tedious!

pilates · 06/10/2023 15:46

Sarah Millican

TheHappyCarrot · 06/10/2023 16:01

I agree Noel Fielding isn't funny, but I do like just looking at him.

BabyFireflyx · 06/10/2023 00:52

WHAT? How?!

He is a raconteur par excellence. He laughs at the world and its absurdities (completely without malice or snideness) and it is.contagious..And he is so observant - he makes audiences see the people and situations he describes.
Have you seen any of his interviews with Michael Parkinson? They are online and Parkie just sits there helplessly shaking with laughter.
Another Connolly Great online is his account of the Glasgow Airport terrorist attack. He says he nearly needed an ambulance when he heard what happened because the situation was so funny - well I nearly needed an ambulance by the time he'd reached 'the leafy lanes of Hampshire and Jon Smeaton comparing the attack to 'skooshin'.
I thought I was going to die laughing..The man is a genius for seeing the funny side. I was so sorry to hear that he has Parkinson's disease. But he makes.jokes about that too. Maybe you could give him one more try - he is worth it!😂
