I bought a polo shirt for my son, bnwt, when it arrived today it looked clean and had its tags. But it smelled of washing powder. I messaged this to the seller whe messaged back to say it had been kept in the utility room next to the clean washing HmmHmm.

When I explained that was all very well but I couldn't give it as a gift smelling second hand, but I was happy to have it for a more reasonable price, her answer was, and I quote 'better it smells fresh than musty'

While this is true, I would rather it did not smell of anything at all. Would you chalk it up to experience, or fight my corner?

🤣🤣🤣
Is this a wind up? You're pissed off the item you have bought smells clean!?
Hang it on the line for half an hour if you're that bothered and it will smell of nothing.

Has happened to me a couple of times.

One item smelt so intensely of Fabreze that I knew it wasn’t new. It took two washes and three days on the line to get rid of the smell.

Nothing I could do. I just read reviews more carefully now and accept that my version of ‘new’ varies to some other Vinted sellers.

MagentaRocks · 05/10/2023 20:11

It has tags, so is as described. I don’t see the issue.

Sure, I have bought many things that smell of washing powder and been totally happy, but I didn't pay for brand new with tags for them. If she said my mistake and knocked of a fiver. I would complete the sale and give good feedback. But at the moment I think fuck that, her listings are dishonest.

So it's for your son but you can't give it as a gift because it smells too fresh.

It has tags, not sure if it is brand new (probably not)

OP posts:
Ostryga · 05/10/2023 20:13

How is she meant to have washed it with the tags staying intact?

MagentaRocks · 05/10/2023 20:14

If it hasn’t been worn then how is it not new? It can’t have been worn and washed if the correct tags are on it, or do you think she has somehow added tags?

TheFlis · 05/10/2023 20:15

They have probably just use febreeze as it smelt musty, does it look brand new? You can always tell from the feel of the fabric if things have been washed. If so there’s no issue and I certainly wouldn’t expect money off.

PeopleAreWeird · 05/10/2023 20:17

Put a review

Received as described, with tags attached but smelt new
Im not happy, Seller wouldnt give me money off because it smelt new and i was expecting it smelling of nothing

amiold · 05/10/2023 20:21

Hmm sometimes I'd give a spray with febreeze/lenor if it had been stored as can smell a bit musty

I think you are being unreasonable. Do you want the item or not? If you do, air it. If not ask to return it for a refund

Rachaelrachael · 05/10/2023 20:31

I don't think you can expect vinted items to not have any smell. Even if they are brand new with tags on they have been stored in someone's home for however long and most people's homes do have a smell.
I used to work in Debenhams and returns quite often had a smell of that person's home. We would never refuse a return though based on a smell, its just one of those things.

bluebeardswife7 · 05/10/2023 20:31

The tags are only looped around a button. They are easy to put back on!!

evrey · 05/10/2023 20:35

If it has tags on you are being cheeky asking for money off

Tags don't generally come looped around a button. Clearly not new. I'd be annoyed as well.

Whateverfuckingnext · 05/10/2023 20:53

You probably would have got a more serious response from me if it had read more like, "I bought an item described as BNWT. However, the tags were not attached to the shirt, Just looped around a button. Plus, the item smells freshly laundered which is just adding to my suspicion that the seller has just tried to make the item appear new".

A response to that would have been along the lines of have you googled the item. Are the tags normally attached? If so, you wouldn't be out of line to mention it to the seller and question the description of the listing and maybe ask for some discount as the item is clearly not as described.

OhmygodDont · 05/10/2023 20:57

You’re into a loser here. She’s not going to knock money off. The item has its tags however it’s attached.

You can return for a refund but you won’t get your postage costs back.

Silverdogblue · 05/10/2023 21:09

Is it a gift for your son? Is he a sommelier?

Well, he is 12, but I often make him bring me wine.

Ah yes. 12 year old boys famously care what their clothes smell of.

Do you think one of the “poors” may have worn it before it was washed? Gross.

BareGrylls · 05/10/2023 21:37

I'm always suspicious of new with tags and avoid. I reckon they are either worn, washed and tags replaced (not difficult with many things), or shoplifted.

GenialHarryGr0ut · 05/10/2023 21:37

Reverse?
