what are the top 3 things that you think the government should be tackling?

after reading various headlines related to the Tory Party Conference and also not related to the conference, I am interested to hear what people think the priorities should be for the government?

because to me they are just mincing around the edges, HS2, smoking bans, so much emphasis on stopping immigrants, post 16 qualifications....huh?

for me, these are the 3 top priorities (subject to change, as I read other people's!)

  1. the NHS
  2. social housing (need more) and rental properties (the STATE that landlords are providing and controlling the cost
  3. poverty....cost of living/wages
  4. the environment....water pollution (water companies discharging sewage to rivers etc) and air pollution

  1. Childcare costs - this will help the economy as more people will work. Has been proven in other countries with better funding.
  2. NHS - I’m not sure what to suggest apart from looking at areas where money is wasted
  3. Benefits that actually benefit people and give them enough to live off of
Musiclover234 · 05/10/2023 06:36

Public services that have been decimated
social care
nhs
education

Crime/policing so there’s actually enough for crimes to be investigated.

Energy/green policies. I feel very sorry for future generations because of the short sightedness of now.

However all this needs money and we don’t have any. Taxes on energy companies and so on could raise more but never popular.
Maybe trying to get back fraudulent covid loans, ppe contracts that didn’t deliver, paying cash to their mates and so on…..

camelfinger · 05/10/2023 06:40

Reducing inequality
Climate change
Education.

I’m not going to say NHS as I don’t want a big reorganisation, but funding in line with an ageing population would be good.

fuckityfuckityfuckfuck · 05/10/2023 06:43

SEN funding
Education funding
Nhs funding
Police

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 05/10/2023 06:44

A better greener environment
Crime
Wean people off benefits and into work which will lead to decreased reliance on imported workforce, and will help the environment by decreased pressure on the environment, on the NHS and will bring down crime.

@Nat6999
Social housing, we built hundreds of thousands of council homes after the war when the country was practically bankrupt, why can't we afford to build now?

We did it by borrowing billions from the US and Canada. Only finished repaying it in 2006. We wouldn't stand a chance of being able to borrow that much now, it was controversial even then.

Landlords are already selling at an alarming rate because of government changes making it less appealing, so rental prices will go up as demand outstrips supply.

I think the biggest issue is the short term thinking. Someone already said about governments only thinking about the duration of their term. Overhauling the NHS would be a longer term project so no government is prepared to start.

Martin83 · 05/10/2023 06:51
  1. NHS. Not just throwing money in the black hole but complete reform of the organisation.
  2. Childcare. Making it affordable for mothers to work.
  3. Affordable housing. Abolition of planing rules and greenfield restrictions.
EveSix · 05/10/2023 06:52

Climate and environmental degradation (sewage in waterways etc) ‐easily top priority.

Education ‐reconfiguring educational provision to create a system that will enable all children and young people to access education that meets their needs. A system which values the workforce and stems the exodus out of the profession. I would also like to see a phasing out of private education, or policies that effectively render the service unattractive to those who would prop up the system: for every paid for place, a full bursary place must be offered to (and taken up by) a pupil eligible for pupil premium, for instance.

I'd like to see an end to private ownership of and profiteering from services which are paid for out of the public purse or which are used by the public because there is no alternative; water, energy, health and social care, landlords as beneficiaries of housing benefit payments, academy trusts etc. Renationalisation of more services and a huge increase in social housing.

panelbottle · 05/10/2023 06:55

Wean people off benefits and into work which will lead to decreased reliance on imported workforce,

We need immigrants regardless due to population dynamics. There are more over 65s than under 15s already. In the 60s it was 5 workers to 1 pensioner, now it's about 3:1 & is forecasted to be 2:1. Without immigration our "natural" population is predicted to start declining in 2 yrs.

panelbottle · 05/10/2023 06:58

Or I suppose we go with Robert Jenricks idea

"Robert Jenrick has called for British families to have more children to help fund and look after an ageing population, after criticising Boris Johnson’s government for encouraging low-skilled workers to come to the UK."

No we don’t and your post is a perfect example of short term thinking.

Whether we like it or not AI will take over many jobs and we will need fewer people in many industries.

What is bad is the declining number of people not contributing to the economy in a population that is rising, as it is now.

Pushkinini · 05/10/2023 07:04

The NHS (and social care)
Housing, particularly social housing
Education

No remotely bothered about cracking down on fraudulent benefits as they are drop in the ocean compared to tax avoidance and evasion.

panelbottle · 05/10/2023 07:06

why do you think population is rising?

Whether we like it or not AI will take over many jobs and we will need fewer people in many industries.

Who will pay for all the AI?

And we do need immigrants as the population shift is impacting now but we don't have AI in place.

chosenone · 05/10/2023 07:08

Mental health provision. 16 students at my school attempted to take their own life last year. 4 were very lucky to survive. These kids shouldn’t be languishing on CAMHS waiting lists. NHS

Housing. Social housing, affordable rents, monitoring of slumlords.

Policing and crime prevention. More visible Policing to keep the streets safe.

All this equates to more taxes which I’m fine with.

cakeorwine · 05/10/2023 07:09

Social care.
NHS - and all around health care
Rent - and housing for people who can't afford houses
NHS dentistry
Tackling the inequalities between regions of the UK
Education - numbers of qualified teachers

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 05/10/2023 07:09

Again, short term solutions leading to long term problems.

lollipoprainbow · 05/10/2023 07:10

A proper mental health provision for kids.

Allowing people who pay massive rents each month to get a mortgage easily.

Whether they work or not, people are taxpayers whenever they pay tax. Pay for goods and services? Pay for fuel? Smoke or drink alcohol? Tax it's paid on top of most of these things. Do they pay road tax or some of their council tax? If so, then they are taxpayers. It may not be as much as someone in full time employment but it's better than nothing and as far as I understand it, very few people contribute more to the system than they take out.

Having to pay VAT out of your benefits does not count as ‘paying tax’.

Its embarrassing that anyone would think that just paying VAT on the occasional luxury item makes contributor.
