after reading various headlines related to the Tory Party Conference and also not related to the conference, I am interested to hear what people think the priorities should be for the government?

because to me they are just mincing around the edges, HS2, smoking bans, so much emphasis on stopping immigrants, post 16 qualifications....huh?

for me, these are the 3 top priorities (subject to change, as I read other people's!)

  1. the NHS
  2. social housing (need more) and rental properties (the STATE that landlords are providing and controlling the cost
  3. poverty....cost of living/wages
  4. the environment....water pollution (water companies discharging sewage to rivers etc) and air pollution

Climate change
NHS
Education

Building more social housing would create jobs, the same with building wind & solar farms. Give farmers subsidies for allowing their land to be used for wind & solar farms. Bring the retirement age down to create more jobs for young people.

I retired early and how am I pulling up the ladder? I'm not claiming any benefits and can't get my state pension until I'm 67. I manage on my Teachers pension I could get at 60, an annuity, interest on savings, and btl income all of which I pay tax on.

I think when posters comment on pulling up the ladder it's more they mean that the opportunities are fewer for younger generations eg what young teacher today will be in the above position when they are 60. Could be wrong though.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/10/2023 07:23

Exactly, today's young teachers are unlikely to be able to buy property at a young age in many areas and even less likely to own extra properties providing a BTL income by 60 and one reason why they can't afford property is due to older people having pushed up prices due to BTL....

@MentholLoad can you give an example of a tax loophole exploited by a large company?

HMRC's UK Tax Gap report overwhelmingly shows that the largest part of the UK tax gap arises in the small businesses sector.

Large companies tend to be listed / audited / subject to higher levels of regulator scrutiny/ have in house tax teams / use advisors, so it's very difficult to see how they can access loopholes that were never intended by Parliament.

Fully agree. But unfortunately the "tax the rich" mob havn't bothered to research the facts and prefer to believe whatever drivel they've seen on facecloth or twatter.

The NHS.
Cost of living crisis.
Environment.

All of which means my vote is not going anywhere near the Tory party.

I also think that tax could be reformed to make it simpler, and it would cost less to collect it and there would be more raised overall. For example, stop the nonsensical split between income tax and employee NI and merge them.

So pulling up the ladder, which means some deliberate action to deny the younger generation by, for instance, early retirees is utterly meaningless. It's not the fault of those people that they took advantage of the opportunities open to them, nor that those opportunities no longer exist/are limited.

Does Rishi need a good sound bite to win the election on and the Tories so out of touch they can’t think of anything? 😅 ooh how about
cost of living
ulez
hopelessness at constant bad news and problems
death of the high street
the country being plundered by unscrupulous people while the average person suffers
being made to feel it’s all our fault and we somehow deserved this? Despite years of austerity. The main thing is the huge noticeable difference between the hope and optimism pre 2016 and the hopelessness now.

panelbottle · 06/10/2023 09:14

@echt but why don't those opportunities exist anymore?

panelbottle · 06/10/2023 09:17

Housing has been turned into a commodity & for many it "earns" them more than salaries do. Rents are astronomical.

Education would have to be up there.
I work in a number of different primary schools and am appalled on a daily basis. There are no spaces in Specialist schools and schools are trying cater for many children with severe special needs. Not fair on those children, the other children in the class or the staff. It’s criminal .
