Did Geri Halliwell always talk with a plum in her mouth?

Ive just had to switch Jimmy Fallon off because she talks like shes from the royal family. Did she talk like that when she was Ginger Spice from Watford? Do any of her mates pull her up on it I wonder?

No, but in the circles she moves in now, i.e. multi-millionaires, it's inevitable that her speech would have become more polished.

I also (unintentionally) find myself doing that annoying thing of enunciating more clearly than I normally do when speaking to Americans, and I end up sounding more well-spoken than usual, so it may be the same for her.

Let's not forget that she herself is a multi-millionaire in her own right.

She was always a big old Tory. Wasn’t she always saying how much she loved Margaret Thatcher back in the day?

Why does MN always like to knock on Geri Halliwell?

It's pretty normal for people's accents to change over time, or according to who they're speaking to, or how they want to be perceived.

Sometimes it's unconscious and sometimes it's deliberate. I can't get too frothy about it either way. We all make choices about how we present ourselves; why shouldn't that be one of them?

(I'm quite happy to judge people who shag married guys whose wives are pregnant, though.)

adhdneedsajob · 05/10/2023 09:27

I had to Google
She is so condescending to Jimmy Fallon. That is why I switched off
I think she and Victoria had the same elocution teacher

Morning Ginge! 👋

What a useless and tired joke. Kind of proves the point that people on here like to kick around Geri Halliwel. I don't know the woman from Adam but I do know and acknowledge that people's naturally accents change over the years. It's really not that big of a deal but people here are obsessed with class and like to remind others not to get too above their station. 🙄

Haven’t heard her recently.
The white clothes are desperate though.
Used to be a thing with older actresses too.
It looks like some kind of mental health issue for her, I’ve started to feel a bit sorry for her, when she’s photographed.

Maybe wearing white clothes is the modern day equivalent to the days back when a pale white skin was an indicator of social standing and wealth - not labouring outside for six long days under a baking sun.

I imagine if you're relatively minted and living the lifestyle it's possible to move around between 'nice' clean places, driven in a fully detailed limo and never risk encountering dirty, dusty, grubby surfaces and smears of ketchup on seats... Nor end up performing awkward contortions grappling with, and going under, the hood when you remember you forgot to top-up the washer water (and should have got your car washed) just as you are about to head off to a posh wedding.

She is on mumsnet and dropped the h in her haitches.

Ha ha! Or is that a a

Lilithlogic · 05/10/2023 09:47

I had elecocution lessons when I was young and now I seem to pick up accents without realising

LegendsBeyond · 05/10/2023 09:48

She’s trying so hard to fit in. It must be exhausting.

HateTheView · 05/10/2023 10:10

Not sure if she's putting it on or not. It could have just changed over time. At the beginning of the interview she said 'bought' instead of 'brought' twice, though. So if she is putting it on she needs to put a bit more effort in! 🤪 Also noticed she didn't always fully pronounce the 't' in someone words, also near the beginning.

I agree with this. I’m listening to her How to Fail podcast and the accent fluctuation is quite comical.

nettie434 · 05/10/2023 10:26

Why is having a posh accent "neutral"? Really gets my goat.

@RosaKim
But Christian Horner doesn't have a posh accent. As@Mummyoflittledragon suggested, I meant that most people would not know where he grew up from his voice alone.

CloakandDagger1 · 05/10/2023 10:31

My Aunt wasn't posh at all, if anythinga bit commom....but then she married posh. Over the years the company she keeps has obviously rubbed off as she speaks like a Royal now. I don't think it's put on, just generally evolved and learned over the years because of her now friendship group, but still makes me lol a bit inside!

Chewbecca · 05/10/2023 10:32

I think her accent is just as it always was.

I disagree she hasn't had any tweakments though, her face is far more taught and smooth than my 51 year old friends.

Lisapeter · 05/10/2023 10:42

Wasn't Mel C from Runcorn not Liverpool. I never thought she sounded scouse.

Jellycats4life · 05/10/2023 10:45

She’s a social climber! She’s putting on a landed gentry vibe now, right down to the country pile and son called Monty.

Still doesn’t bear Donna Air though.

Paddingtonthebear · 05/10/2023 10:47

Of course the accent is developed. No one from Watford talks like that (have family there!)

Mirabai · 05/10/2023 10:48

It’s ok to marry someone from a different background. Unless we think class boundaries should be observed and everyone should stay in the lane in which they were born.

piscofrisco · 05/10/2023 10:52

I just think accents change unconsciously depending on where you live and who you mix with. That said for some reason when I lived in Canada I began to speak as if I was actually part of the royal family. I couldn't stop doing it! I must have subconsciously felt it was expected of me for some reason as that's what Canadians think we all sound like. To be fair they loved it! It got some comment from my friends when they came over to visit. I'm from Derbyshire and you'd know it if you met me (when not living in Canada) Grin

piscofrisco · 05/10/2023 10:54

She's had tons of tweakments! I don't blame her. I would if I could afford it. She looks great I think!

Janieforever · 05/10/2023 10:58

nettie434 · 05/10/2023 04:08

👏👏👏

I can't remember how she sounded originally but her appearance has definitely changed to become more classic (no more Union Jack dresses). Christian Horner was privately educated and he has a more neutral voice. It might not even be particularly conscious. Lots of people adapt their tone of voice slightly depending on the company.

She didn’t run about in her private life in Union Jack dresses, it was a stage outfit. Just like Elton John didn’t run about in sparkly suits at home.

and if anyone at 50 is still wearing the same clothes they did at 20 then they likely look dated . Most of us change our clothing style as we get older and it would be odd as fuck if she was running around in Union Jack dresses. 😂

amisrong · 05/10/2023 11:04

No, it's because of Christian Horner.

Daffodilwoman · 05/10/2023 11:17

I was thinking the same as Janiefirever
When I was in my 20s I wore short skirts. I don’t know. I don’t buy anything unless it’s below my knee. I also love to see people wearing white. I recently bought a white dress. There was a robe when I avoided white due to having young children and periods. That’s behind me now so I too can show off in white!
I didn’t know her dh cheated on his pregnant wife.
Hasn’t Geri been married before? Does she have a dd called Bluebell?
