Did Geri Halliwell always talk with a plum in her mouth?

Ive just had to switch Jimmy Fallon off because she talks like shes from the royal family. Did she talk like that when she was Ginger Spice from Watford? Do any of her mates pull her up on it I wonder?

No, but in the circles she moves in now, i.e. multi-millionaires, it's inevitable that her speech would have become more polished.

I also (unintentionally) find myself doing that annoying thing of enunciating more clearly than I normally do when speaking to Americans, and I end up sounding more well-spoken than usual, so it may be the same for her.

👏👏👏

I can't remember how she sounded originally but her appearance has definitely changed to become more classic (no more Union Jack dresses). Christian Horner was privately educated and he has a more neutral voice. It might not even be particularly conscious. Lots of people adapt their tone of voice slightly depending on the company.

Why is having a posh accent "neutral"? Really gets my goat.

She’s travelled the world and now mixes in higher echelons of society, her voice is bound to have changed a bit. Posh’s has too and Mel C is nowhere near as scouse as she was in the early days. My accent has become less regional after uni, working in London, marrying someone from a different part of the UK. It’s not plummy, but it’s different to when I was 22.

Mel C isnt scouse shes from Widnes

Same with Gillian Keegan and Esther McVey - they both do that "posh" Scouse accent which sounds so unnatural.

Gillian keegan isnt scouse.

I take that to mean you can’t tell where the person comes from.

As for GH, maybe she’s a bit like me in terms of accents…

My dd tells me some of her friends have commented that my accent is posh. Partly it’s just where I come from and where we live. I’m from the south and for reasons unknown (as my parents weren’t particularly posh) used to have a ver posh accent, which I dropped for the rough secondary I attended in favour of a “Grange Hill” one. I sort went back to a less affected accent after the event.

Then when we lived abroad, I apparently took on an international accent and some people struggled to say which English speaking country I was from. All done unconsciously. I suppose when we returned to the Uk I went back to how I spoke before because I stopped hanging around with those people.

Interestingly I haven’t picked up the local accent but in my village it isn’t really that strong. I have a friend, who’s also from the south and has lived abroad so that possibly influences me too. We recently visited a local private school, which dd may like to go to for A levels if she gets the grades. The accents there were more similar to mine bar a few vowel sounds.

higher echelons of society
🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨

sawnotseen · 05/10/2023 06:54

It's how you've lived. I'm sarf east London born and bred but I don't have that accent anymore, after working 30 odd years in public facing city roles. My parter has the most pronounced SE London accent though - London cabbie!

NoIcePlease · 05/10/2023 07:04

I just had a quick Google of it, I don't think she sounds particularly different at all. Just the natural slight tweaks that come with age, different areas, job etc.

I think she looks fantastic though (although all the white is a bit odd). Fresh and healthy and natural (from the 30 seconds I've viewed). I've no doubt she probably has had tweaks but she doesn't look like she's done anything to her face.

Victoria Beckham by contrast has clearly gone to the dark side and her face now looks pumped, swollen and stretched, I was shocked by a recent pic of her. I honestly don't know why women do it, apart from looking awful I think it's far more aging than a few lines!

SisterAgatha · 05/10/2023 07:35

Peoples voices do change, I don’t use my real voice at work, Jesus I’d be out the door 🤣

Exactly this.

ZenNudist · 05/10/2023 07:39

Surprised she's still being interviewed. Surely her job nowadays is being rich married to someone else rich.

ButterMyParsnip · 05/10/2023 07:54

I can't judge her, my accent is a mess. I pick them up easily and after several years of living in different countries nobody can tell where I'm from.

Remmy123 · 05/10/2023 07:56

No. Same as vic beckham she speaks v posh now!

Riverlee · 05/10/2023 08:00

But Victoria Beckham is posh spice.

4naansjeremy · 05/10/2023 08:10

Unless everyone things that “ginger spice” was her real personality rather than a role she was playing in a highly polished pop group it’s surely more likely that this is the real Geri?

Is she not likely to have formed her own political opinion? Only from her husband?

And from memory, when the spice girls were running around I thought one of them at least referenced Thatcher as a strong woman, I dont know why there is this automatic assumption that pop stars are left wing.

Marsyas · 05/10/2023 08:15

Yes but she is an actress, different accents for different roles , I don't think her Dr Who accent is her real accent in the same way David Tennant's isn't!

4naansjeremy · 05/10/2023 08:17

I’m fairly sure the spice girls arranged their touring around limiting their tax liabilities in the UK too.

IncognitoMam · 05/10/2023 08:29

Just watched it and she came across as engaging. I don't think her accent has changed much tbh.

LyndaLaHughes · 05/10/2023 08:38

That's how she has always spoken.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 05/10/2023 08:39

I think she has always sounded like that

JingsMahBucket · 05/10/2023 08:42

Why does MN always like to knock on Geri Halliwell?

Fleabane · 05/10/2023 08:46

There is literally a video on this thread which shows that she didn't always talk like that. Grin

It's totally put on.

And as for why MN likes to put her down - she had an affair with her now husband while his wife was pregnant. That's mainly on him of course but it speaks to the kind of person she is.

Mirabai · 05/10/2023 08:47

Do posters really expect everyone to keep their regional accent indefinitely when they relocate? Language is aural as well as oral and we learn language by ear as kids. Thus British pick up US twang when they live there and Americans pick up British inflection here. Doesn’t mean it’s fake.
