Would you add work colleagues on social media?

I work in a small team of 6 including our line manager

One of my colleagues is openly against social media so doesn’t have any. I am quite sure all the others have each other on social media. Generally a relaxed carry on and everyone gets on really well as far as I can see.

I’ve only been there about a year and only have one of my colleagues on social media, who I work with the most. Definitely thinking too much about this one but would it be weird to out the blue send a follow request?

I am sure they’d accept but i would feel so awkward if they didn’t !

Why haven't they sent you one already if it's that small a team and that's what they do?

I don't have anyone on social media while I'm actually working with them - too much work/life crossover for me.

That’s what I was thinking. I don’t know if they’ve maybe just not thought about it though.

I only add work people if I'm mates with them and see them outside of work. I have a work X account and have followed lots of colleagues' professional accounts on there

Thanks! This makes sense

Only on Linked in. I like to retain an air of mystery otherwise Grin

My rule is never with current colleagues.

When I leave a job I send invites to those I'd like to keep in contact with.

Nope and ignore if they add me. I don't use social media really anyway but I still wouldn't.

RaisinsOfMildAnnoyance · 04/10/2023 21:26

LinkedIn only. I've no interest in sharing more than a surface level with colleagues.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 04/10/2023 22:10

No. I’m not friends on SM with any of my work colleagues. They’re all WhatsApp friends with each other, but they don’t meet outside of work. When I was asked to join I declined. Some of it is reporting sickness, which quite frankly is none of their business. That was the HR manager’s idea.

NashEnquirer · 04/10/2023 22:11

It's literally my one rule of life never to add colleagues on social media, even former colleagues! Served me well so far.

Grapefruitsquash · 04/10/2023 22:16

Only on LinkedIn here too.

I have one colleague that I socialise with and now him and his wife are friends with DH and me but I still haven’t added him. If he or I leave then I will but otherwise no.

Millybob · 04/10/2023 22:17

Why do you want/need them to know about your private life?
I'd definitely say no or ignore if anybody asked me.

QueSyrahSyrah · 04/10/2023 22:19

Facebook only if I'm friends with and socialise with them outside of work, so 2 of our 15 strong office. Bit more easy going on Instagram and Twitter. My boss follows me 🤷🏻‍♀️

CharlotteStreetW1 · 04/10/2023 22:21

Yes but I never invite them but will accept if they invite me.

I've been fortunate to work with some very sociable people. In fact I'm meeting some former coleagues from nearly 20 years ago for drinks on Friday and four of us from my current job are having a day out on Saturday.
