Self raising flour, BBE 6/21, would you use it?

I'm just clearing out my pantry & have two bags of SR flour dated 2021. Would you use it? I'm guessing probably not, the raising agent will not be as good as it was 2 years ago?

Goodness knows how it escaped previous sort outs 🤷‍♀️

I think you’re right about the raising agent. Can you use it in cheese sauce etc where it doesn’t need to raise?

BarnacleBeasley · 04/10/2023 09:13

I probably would, but maybe add half a teaspoon of baking powder just in case.

lucysmam · 04/10/2023 09:14

Oh, yes! That's maybe a better idea than baking with it, and definitely better than chucking it!

I'd use it for pastry, then if the raising agent does work you'll get a lighter pastry. Also in cheese sauces etc as a PP said. I wouldn't use it for a sponge, or for anything like a baked cheesecake where you couldn't risk it rising.

Is the bag still sealed? I would check for critters, and use it. It's only bb not raw chicken. I've never found any problems with non rising.

Pastry is a good idea. However, I wouldn't make anything specially that you wouldn't otherwise be making - otherwise you'll end up using more ingredients just to use up the flour, which would be just as much of a waste as chucking it away.

I would be very worried about weevils if the flours hasn’t been stored in an airtight container.

If it's not wriggling, yes, I'd use it.
With an extra dose of baking powder, or in less "fussy" recipes.
