Do you peel the eggs for the whole family

Hello!
Just that really! If you're making eggs for your whole family. Do you peel everyone's eggs (non counting young children) or do you put them on a plate and expect everyone to peel their own?

Thank you

@PenhillDarkMonarch @Yalz @mrswhiplington Yep deffo works! It might take a bit of trial and error to get the amount of water and shaking right to get the shells fully off without damaging the eggs (at first you'll probably not shake hard/long enough!) but it's a great time saver

ReeseWitherfork · 03/10/2023 15:26

I’ve never served boiled eggs in a picky tea but I feel confident I would peel them. I always peel over the sink to save shell going everywhere; I certainly wouldn’t want them peeled at the table.

mrsm43s · 03/10/2023 15:28

If I was preparing a meal that involved hard boiled eggs, then yes, I'd peel them as part of the meal prep process (thinking kedgeree/fish pie/egg sandwiches/egg salad/ramen etc).

We'd have soft boiled eggs rather than hard for breakfast, and we eat them out of the shell, so obviously they're served in their shells. I guess the closest equivalent that we do in terms of hard boiled eggs being put out for people to help themselves to is on a buffet - and yes, I'd peel them (and halve them) before putting them out. But that's more likely a party situation than a day to day meal. If we were going on a picnic and taking them, I think I'd probably peel them all before leaving home.

I'd leave them in their shell in the fridge for snacks, and people would help themselves and peel their own.

As an aside, I find cold hard boiled eggs an unusual thing to have for breakfast. Our breakfast eggs are always warm, and boiled eggs would always be served soft for breakfast.

@BillStickersWillBeProsocuted , would there be any point in pre-cracking the shells before they go into the Tupperware? If I didn’t have to shake the box so vigorously maybe the shells wouldn’t come off.

It's always worked for me just putting them in, but I suppose a bit of pre-cracking might help things along

‘Basically king of like a breakfast with baguette/pitta bread and you have cheese/eggs/butter/jam to make your own sandwiches’

Mmmm egg and jam pittas 😄

boozeclues · 03/10/2023 15:45

Well if we are having “communal boiled eggs” in our house it’s always with soldiers, served in their shells in an egg cup.

We have a boiled egg topper that cuts the top off perfectly - I usually do this for everyone because it’s oddly satisfying to do 🫣

PuttingDownRoots · 03/10/2023 15:53

I either serve hard boiled eggs chopped up/sliced... or in an egg cup ih a spoon. The idea of having to peel ameg as part of eating in a meal (not prepping it) seems odd to me.

Starseeking · 03/10/2023 15:54

I would peel them all, yes.

Nothing worse than peeling a cold hard boiled egg, ewww!

wereonthemarket · 03/10/2023 14:47

I don't know why but I found this so funny.

I've never heard of peeling an egg though?!

I realise that doesn't answer your question. But thanks for making me smile!

I'm with you
Very odd to dole out hard boiled egg minis their shells

stayathomer · 03/10/2023 15:59

I’d chop up for a salad or else they’d be in an egg cup for some, only peel for 2 who usually have a sandwich

Basically king of like a breakfast with baguette/pitta bread and you have cheese/eggs/butter/jam to make your own sandwiches

In that case not peeled, I would serve them in egg cups or in a bowl for people to help themselves as they wish.

Has someone complained that you aren't peeling their eggs?

Londonscallingme · 03/10/2023 16:03

We eat soft boiled eggs as part of a meal when you might more usually have poached (because I can't be bothered with the faff and I suspect i'll make a mess of poaching them). I peel them all if I have time but if everything is ready and I haven't peeled them I hand them out unpeeled and let each person get on with it themselves.

Mariposista · 03/10/2023 16:05

I do as I find it oddly satisfying haha

ZiriForEver · 03/10/2023 16:05

Central Europe, we generally eat bigger hot lunch and smaller dinner here, so something like bread, cheese, vegetables and boiled eggs would be a normal dinner for me. Everyone peels their own, we are capable of not dropping the shells on the floor, and any uneaten can just wait in the fridge.

If I’m doing a continental style breakfast, so meats, cheese, eggs, etc, I wouldn’t peel them. They don’t in hotels.

@CanOfGerms

I know found it odd myself too, I don't know anyone over 3 that eats boiled eggs, I think of them as weaning foods. Oh well you learn a new thing everyday.

I like boiled eggs. Hard boiled and peeled in a salad or softer with a runny yolk and served in an egg cup with toast fingers I didn't think that was unusual. I also put halved hard boiled eggs in a fish pie

PipersDream · 03/10/2023 16:44

Hard boiled:

If it's to go in a salad, I peel and chop them.

If it's everyone deciding what they want/sandwich type meal then I put them on the plate and we have egg battles for the honour of being the last egg un-cracked and then peel our own.

Butterkist8 · 03/10/2023 16:47

Jk987 · 03/10/2023 14:41

I put an unpeeled one in my daughters nursery lunchbox. Feel like it stays fresher that way.

So who peels your child's egg then?

This probably explains why it's 'all hands on deck' in the dinner hall at school where staff do an endless round of encouraging children to try to use cutlery , peel their pepperamis, open their fruit/yoghurt pouches, peel their 'lunchables' box and help them to 'stack' their crackers.

LemonWaterSugar · 03/10/2023 16:48

Not a fan of people handling my food so I'd rather someone didn't peel my egg for me.

cardibach · 03/10/2023 16:55

Theoldwoman · 03/10/2023 14:52

Are you serious?

Everyone I know eats hard boiled eggs!

And yes, OP, I peel them all.

I don’t. They’re vile. Vile texture, vile smell, vile taste.
I didn’t eat them under 3 either though, and neither did DD, for exactly the same reasons.

cardibach · 03/10/2023 16:57

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/10/2023 15:00

I love boiled eggs, both hard and soft boiled. I was brought up to slice off the top of the soft boiled egg so then I can scoop out the egg with my spoon. Soft boiled eggs make a lovely simple meal, with hot buttered toast or other nice bread.

I suppose the people saying they never boil eggs never make egg sandwiches. You're missing out!

I don’t. And I’m not.
why would I be missing out by not eating something that makes me heave at the very thought of putting it in my mouth? 🤮

CurlewKate · 03/10/2023 17:11

I'm always amazed how Mumsnet opens up new horizons to me....🤣

Peridot1 · 04/10/2023 09:14

I’ve just had boiled eggs for breakfast. With wholegrain toast. I have it a few times a week. Not hard boiled but not far off as I like to put the egg on my toast rather than dip my toast in. Nice high protein healthy breakfast.
