If you are slim are you regularly hungry

Prompted by a thread about weight training and weight loss. A poster stated that they are always hungry on the days they train. They said they put up with this to stay slim.
So if you are slim do you experience and ignore hunger on a regular basis?

It's not a cause and effect for me, i.e. I don't deliberately put up with being hungry in order to stay slim. But yes, I do quite often feel hungry between meals and just chalk it up as normal because I haven't eaten for a few hours. I don't rush to eat something as soon as I feel a hunger pang. It's not a constant feeling, anyway, I would just notice being hungry and then forget about it.

Don’t normally feel hungry until about 4 hour after last meal. So breakfast at 7 and I get a few rumbles at 11.30. Lunch at 12(school hrs) so hungry around 4, have a few carrot sticks with a bit of hummus then make dinner for 6. Don’t eat after dinner ever. Had spaghetti bolognaise at 6 and still full.

Trainplan · 02/10/2023 21:23

No. I'm the same weight now at 53 as I was at 16. I exercise a lot which does make me hungry, so I eat.

I eat well, not obsessively "healthy" but meals mostly cooked from scratch and very little snacking. I don't eat after dinner in the evenings. I enjoy food and eat the things I like, but that's good food, not junk. I don't follow any faddy diets and I know it's unfashionable, but I still believe (the right kind of) carbs are an important food group

Blinkityblonk · 02/10/2023 21:23

I am not slim, so probably shouldn't answer this, but if I am hungry and ignore it more than about an hour, I get a migraine. I am not good with coping with hunger at all.

Yes, I think this is key. You're supposed to feel hungry by the time you sit down for the next meal.

MoisturiseYourMoose · 02/10/2023 21:25

I’m a size 8 and I’m always hungry despite eating more than anyone I know. It’s actually really shit and the hunger turns to pain very quickly. It also triggers migraines as a PP said.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 02/10/2023 21:25

I'm hungry before I eat, yes. If I'm not ill don't eat. Sometimes that means I don't eat til lunch, sometimes that means I eat a lot.

WhateverMate · 02/10/2023 21:26

Like a PP, I feel hungry for my next meal about an hour or 1.5 hours beforehand.

It means I enjoy it much more too.

Jacquer · 02/10/2023 21:26

No. I eat at fairly consistent intervals in the day and if I get peckish between, I'll snack on some protein or fruit. I eat a lot of calories in a day though so there isn't a lot of room to be hungry.

Londonscallingme · 02/10/2023 21:28

Before I had a baby I trained a lot so I was hungry a lot but I wasn’t trying to be hungry, it was sometimes just difficult to eat when the hunger set in (ie at work, in meetings) so I had to wait until the next opportunity to eat. Being hungry isn’t a bad thing although I wouldn’t want hunger to be a destination point, it was just what happened because I was burning a lot of calories. These days I train less and I’m hungry less and I eat less (I’m still slim but much less fit than I used to be!). I miss being hungry, food is much less enjoyable when you are inactive, imo.

ChristmasCrumpet · 02/10/2023 21:30

I'm pretty slim. Lucky genes in part.

I've put on weight in the last year (am circa 9st now, but was 8st) and this is solely due to eating piles of crap when I'm bored. Particularly in front of the TV at night.

I'm now losing it slowly, because I've taken up a part time job and I rush about all day. It's not the physical rushing about though, it's the fact I don't stop, I got in today at 9.15, I left at 4 and got home and thought "blimey, I didn't have lunch".

When you are busy, the time goes so quickly and you just buzz about from one thing to another and it's a complete distraction from hunger. I say this as someone who would sit at home when the DC were in nursery and graze all day, tubes of pringles, multiple choc bars, endless tea with a biscuit or 3 each time. Now, for 3 days a week, I am on such a mission at work, I grab a couple of teas throughout the day and I don't even think about food.

My clothes are suddenly fitting better again, instead of looking like they were borderline too small. Being busy is what works for me.

ltappleby · 02/10/2023 21:31

I don’t like eating unless I’m hungry. I regulate my eating so that I feel hungry just before my next meal. I eat 3 times a day and don’t snack. If I travel long haul for the first few days I’ll feel hungry at my usual UK meal times.

roastytoastysnowballs · 02/10/2023 21:33

Yeah

If I ate every time I was hungry then I'd be 15 stone

I live with the hunger and I'm 8 stone as a result

I genuinely think about Chinese takeaway at least 5 times per evening

SmileyClare · 02/10/2023 21:34

Yes I think it’s normal to feel hungry.

I have a huge bowl of porridge that keeps me going until about 4pm, and a very physical job in the week so just drink water.

I think food is much more enjoyable if you’re hungry! I’ll have an evening meal then no food after 7pm.

I wake up ravenous- it’s what gets me out of bed.

Feeling hungry doesn’t particularly bother me, I can ignore it if I’m busy. And I like being slim and very active.

On my day off - Sunday I snack on whatever I want and laze about. I do really hate feeling completely full and stuffed though- I find that feeling more uncomfortable than feeling hungry.

It seems to work for me although maybe I’ll blow up when I retire 😂

Snoken · 02/10/2023 21:39

My bmi is on the lower end of normal. I think the only time I am not hungry is straight after my evening meal, but I do intermittant fasting long term and being hungry is just my normal state. I don't even think about it. I am actually much more uncomfortable when I am full than hungry.

KohlaParasaurus · 02/10/2023 21:41

I don't deliberately tolerate being hungry to be slim. I'm only regularly hungry first thing in the morning until I have breakfast.

HongKongGarden · 02/10/2023 21:41

There are always things that it’d be nice to eat, “treats” like cake or chocolate, but which I know I have to limit.

I’m 168cm and 52kg, which is a BMI of 18.7.

Cynderella · 02/10/2023 21:46

When I was younger (under 40, say), I ate what I liked and was slim. Since then, I've been a bit up and down. For a long time, I was about 9 stone, going up half a stone on holiday and dropping it pretty quickly. Never felt hungry.

Then I went up to 10 stone, dieted and lost a stone - yes, I felt hungry, but after a week or two eating less, hunger went away. Now, it's much harder to shift weight even though I don't eat much. Again, I feel hungry when I start cutting back. Then I get used to it - truth be told, I only feel hungry because I've got into the habit of eating too much. I'm just not meant to eat three meals a day any more.

JustFrustrated · 02/10/2023 21:48

Im BMI healthy, size 8/10/12.
.I can easily go from 9pm until 4pm without food some days without noticing.

I can't be hungry. I can feel hungry and that'll be ok ...for a while but then I become actually ill, like shaking and dizzy and irritable. So I avoid feeling hungry too much. I know my limit.
.it's not about weight. It's about...laziness. I can be too lazy to get up from my office and go get lunch.

BonjourCrisette · 02/10/2023 21:50

I am fairly slim (lower end of normal BMI) and I do feel hungry sometimes but not because I am waiting to feel hungry before I eat or deliberately being hungry to restrict calories. I just don't usually eat things unless I feel hungry. I usually feel quite hungry before I eat lunch and before I eat dinner. I think it's probably fairly normal to feel hungry before you eat a meal.

BigBoysDontCry · 02/10/2023 21:51

It's normal to feel hungry. Constant snacking and eating too much at meals has become normality for most though so people don't like it and feel the need to stop the feeling.

For most, you are probably thirsty so try a glass of water first when you think you are hungry.

Hunger pangs tend to disappear quite quickly regardless if ignored.

I've been overweight and I was overeating but I know now that it was never genuine hunger, just cravings.

I'm currently a little underweight and trying to put on a few pounds. It's not as easy as I thought it would be when I no longer eat sugar or simple carbs.

littleripper · 02/10/2023 21:52

Hungry can mean different things to different people. Peckish? Constantly. Ravenous, I try not to get this hungry as I over eat and feel rubbish.

Strokethefurrywall · 02/10/2023 21:55

Depending on how hard I train in the morning depends on how hungry I am.

I'm slim and very active - days I train I'll feel genuinely hungry by 11am (don't really eat breakfast), on days I don't train I go through until 1-2pm.

That being said, I had far more hunger pangs and cravings when I ate sugar/processed foods, and now that I don't eat them I don't have cravings for them (or feel lightheaded either).

Legomania · 02/10/2023 21:56

Like a pp, I am often hungry but can't stay that way long as I am really sensitive to low blood sugar -can't concentrate on my work, make silly mistakes and my mood really suffers. I get hangry to the extent that I have to take the edge off before meeting people for a meal.

I don't eat junk in hunger unless there is nothing else, that's for afterwards.

NotAKangaroo · 02/10/2023 22:02

I'm slim and wouldn't eat dinner if I wasn't hungry; what's the point? In fact I skipped it this evening because I had snacked on crackers and cheese before, so the urge to eat dinner was gone. It's like trying to sleep when you're not tired.

I hate the feeling of being full. If I eat too much, I can't do anything except sitting without feeling uncomfortable. I don't mind being hungry, I don't like cooking and I'm lazy, so I often choose feeling a bit hungry over cooking.
