If you are slim are you regularly hungry

Prompted by a thread about weight training and weight loss. A poster stated that they are always hungry on the days they train. They said they put up with this to stay slim.
So if you are slim do you experience and ignore hunger on a regular basis?

Yes im always hungry. My bmi is 19. Im not “naturally” slim. Was overweight most my teen years and also after until i had kids. With my second child i gained so much weight and it didnt shift anymore. I went on a very strict diet for 2 years which left me hungry all the time. Im now slimmer than ever and have been for 6 years.
I tried to up my calories a bit and eat more, but i gain weight right away, so ive accepted that this is my life now.
I prefer being slim. I feel better mentally and physically and im now not as hungry anymore as i used to be. But i never feel really full or over full like i used to after a hog meal.

What dress sizes do you consider slim?

That's a bit of an odd question because one can be overweight and still wear a size 10 for example.

Especially if there are no zips/buttons.

I wouldn't have a clue what my body fat percentage is! I don't think most people would.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 02/10/2023 23:19

No, but I have little snacks or healthy ones when I'm hungry or just have my meal earlier in the day . What I don't do is binge on junk and sugary drinks and wine like I used to pre pregnancy

Dutchesss · 02/10/2023 23:24

I'm actually hungry right now. I didn't realise until I read this thread. I had dinner at 5.30, I've then rushed to drop/collect children from activities and then done some late night chores. If I wasn't busy I would have probably eaten again but I forgot.

Beesandhoney123 · 02/10/2023 23:28

Like an earlier poster, I eat well- nothing special, just food prepared from scratch, meat and veg, or fish with veg, not too much - I don't eat as much as the menfolk in our house. I don't snack because I just don't/ doesnt occur to me. Didn't grow up with snacks or takeaways as an option- massive cooked breakfast, small lunch, meat and veg for dinner. Drink full fat milk, butter, but all in moderation.

I am busy all the time- teenage dc stuff, walking dogs, housework, working, I can't sit about when there are things to do:)

I get hungry, but that just means it must be a mealtime. I don't get hungry or let myself be hungry iyswim. otherwise. Dc and I are all slim and energetic though, genetics? Ds eats a lot, but is growing and a keen athlete. Dc have puddings - home made cakes etc with cream or custard. Not a big portion through . I might but usually I'm full up. Unless I've made fondant then yeah go on then.

We don't drink as a habit at all. Get up too early and need to be on it for work.

I was massive when pregnant though. Huge. Was always hungry and eating endlessly, cheese rolls whilt waiting for , lamb roast dinners to cook. I used to cry if the fridge wasn't full to bursting at all times and wail irrationally about running out of food. Bonkers:)

I do but I am a recovering anorexic so maybe not the best person to ask.

I am a size 8 but with a large frame so although my BFP is low (much lower than is considered healthy for a woman my age) my BMI is actually considered normal as I literally do have "heavy bones"!

IShouldBeSoLurky · 02/10/2023 23:28

I’m slim, very lean and very active. I eat two meals a day plus a small snack mid afternoon if I’m really hungry then. Otherwise I totally feel hungry before meals (maybe an hour before). It’s great, I like feeling of being really hungry when I’ve got nice food to look forward to! But If for example I’m going out for a big lunch I’ll make sure to eat something small in the morning because I know more than a couple of hours of being very hungry is too long for me - I get very ratty and anxious. I’d never snack on crisps/toast/biscuits etc, it just sets you up for a blood sugar crash later.

PeachF · 02/10/2023 23:30

I genuinely never feel hungry. I eat the odd snack to stop me feeling light headed and drink lots but I don't ever have an appetite. I guess that's why I'm slim but it's certainly not a healthy lifestyle.

I am regularly hungry and don’t mind if I’m busy. I prefer feeling slightly hungry to feeling slightly full. I tend to eat more in the evenings because I’m not busy and not distracted.

Yeah, still no idea 😂

You asked the OP what dress sizes they consider slim, and I just pointed out that there's no such thing really as a 'slim' dress size.

I find threads like this eye-opening. I can't believe how many women have disordered eating, but see it as normal. It is not normal to eat so little that you feel hungry for hours on end, just to keep your weight low. There's nothing wrong with having a BMI of 18/19, if that's what is natural for your body, but if eating a normal, healthy diet would mean weight gain, it isn't natural for your body.

Size eight, or thereabouts. It’s quite variable though, given how different body shapes can be.

Surely most people don't know what their body fat % is, so cannot calculate FFMI.

WhateverMate · 02/10/2023 23:47

I would have absolutely no idea what my body fat percentage is.

And I've never even heard of FFMI.

dontbenastyhaveapasty · 02/10/2023 23:52

This thread surprises me. I’m slim, from a family of slim people.

I don’t really get hungry. If I’ve missed a meal or two, I get a bit short-tempered, but not hunger - no rumbling stomach or burning desire to eat. The only time I get actually hungry (ie a physical sensation) is when I’m doing loads of physical activity.

I know my family members are the same. It’s actually really problematic for elderly members of the family, because they’re too frail to be active enough to ever feel hungry, and it’s difficult to eat if you aren’t hungry.

If i got hungry, I’d eat.

CallieRedux · 02/10/2023 23:53

I eat OMAD. I'm 60, and work from home, so easier for me than some. I usually eat around 11AM, but if I'm hungry earlier, or later, I'll eat then.

I actually like feeling a little hungry - it's far closer to what humans have evolved to do rather than eating constantly. Absolutely HATE feeling over-full, so sometime my OMAD is spread over a couple of hours, if I've overestimated.

I've never been a sweet eater, even prefer vegetables to fruit, so that helps, too. Limiting food to once a day also means I don't mind taking the time to cook something really delicious and savor it. (IMPORTANT NOTE: this is far, far easier for me on my own, than it was when I was married, with my son at home. My ex liked a big evening meal, and, of course, my son needed feeding).

I'm 5'4" and 120 lbs - same as I was in high school. Shit's ... shifted, though. :D

For me personally, and I'm absolutely not judging anyone else for their weight because it's nothing to do with me, being overweight would definitely not be worth the trade off of avoiding a few hunger pangs. It would be so uncomfortable and inconvenient that it makes me shudder to think of it.

WhichEllie · 03/10/2023 00:13

I’m honestly not sure how often I feel hungry because it passes so quickly. I’ll have a pang or two and that’s it, it just goes away. I never stop what I’m doing to eat though and also don’t snack so I think that’s why the signal is so brief. I’ll eat when I choose to and when it’s convenient. My body knows it’s not going to get fed when I’m in the middle of working or driving or whatever so it doesn’t bother carrying on about it. I had more persistent hunger pangs when I was younger and more willing to indulge them, so it’s just something that has changed over time once I started ignoring them.
