Light-hearted, but then again not really. Which one should I prioritise?

Help me choose. I need to:

  • start therapy (EMDR for C-PTSD)
  • get a driving license
  • renew my swimming membership

I don't have enough spare time in the week to do all three at once. Lane swimming is really good for my MH. So is therapy, but it may get worse before it gets better once we start digging up the past. Driving is not something I desperately need to do but is a life skill I need to achieve at some point.
I am stuck in indecision. WWYD?

Swimming - instant hit
therapy - long term hit
driving license - nice to have

NoSquirrels · 02/10/2023 14:32

Do you really not have time for 2 things?

TeenDivided · 02/10/2023 14:33

Swimming and therapy alternate weeks?

Octavia64 · 02/10/2023 14:35

Not the driving.

Put the driving lessons on the back burner for now.

swimming

ZenNudist · 02/10/2023 14:37

Swimming and therapy for sure. Sounds like you need the therapy more.

theescapeladder · 02/10/2023 14:46

Thank you.

Yes I agree, therapy sounds like the most sensible place to start. But... I've been through talking therapies before and they did help, but only fleetingly. EMDR is sort of my last bet, I worry "what if" it doesn't work. So I postpone.

In my head driving was sort of like a little achievement (for some reason I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be too hard for me) which could give me a confidence boost - and help me get to the pool which is a few miles away.

Do you really not have time for 2 things?

I could spare around 2-3hrs in the late afternoon/evening on weekdays. More time on the weekends but I might struggle to find a therapist working Saturdays.

So you can spare a couple of hours every day? I haven’t misunderstood?

If so, then renew your swimming membership and go 2-3 times a week, or whatever frequency helps/is possible. Then organise EMDR 1 day a week, and a driving lesson 1 day a week (it can even pick you up or drop you off from the pool).

I think you can do it all, but because you want to put off EMDR you’ve got yourself in a quandary trying to bargain with yourself that you can’t have swimming because you should do EMDR - or driving, you could do driving instead… But really you can do a bit of everything with the time you have, unless finances prohibit it.

Rayna37 · 02/10/2023 15:30

Gojng against the grain here: I have a degree but I'd honestly say my driving license is much more important.

Thank you @NoSquirrels. That is sound advice.
You have described my internal monologue pretty accurately 😄
Financial aspect is a concern but it's doable with a few adjustments here and there.

In that case, renew the swimming membership right now, and commit to researching both EMDR therapists and driving instructors. Give yourself a deadline to have found say 2 EMDR therapists to talk to. Then decide what you want to do. But keep swimming, it’ll help the decision-making and the stress levels.
