Strange scratches keep appearing on my palm? What are they?

Hi Mumsnet.

For about a year now I have been trying to get to the bottom of a mystery.

Every few weeks or so I notice these scratches on my palm. They aren't really scratches, they don't hurt or itch and they aren't deep at all, but they ARE there and they are noticeable. They heal within a few days onky to reappear in the same place a couple of weeks later.

I have been trying to figure out how they get there and what causes them but I am completely dumbfounded?!

I don't feel them when they happen as no pain. They aren't in keeping with the natural creases of my wrist so this rules out an skin disorder.

It's not related to gardening or or opening tins etc, but as it is always the same sort of pattern (3 lines) it must be SOMETHING I am doing regularly! I have even checked my car steering wheel and all my door handles for jagged edges but nothing!

Does anyone else have experience of similar? Any ideas?

Just a guess, my gear stick had the metal effect stuff on the top start to peel off and it was scratching my hand - similar marks but nothing to the extent yours is scratched and I could feel it scratching me!

Ghost kitten.

TheSpottedZebra · 02/10/2023 11:59

Or... some rough bit on a door handle or similar.

Do you use a computer mouse?

oOiluvfriendsOo · 02/10/2023 12:00

Is it not just cracked skin rather than 'scratches'.

LardoBurrows · 02/10/2023 12:00

Stigmata. You are now a Saint.

TheSpottedZebra · 02/10/2023 12:01

Or a big knife that you have to lever to get through something tough, like a butternut squash.

LNY1986 · 02/10/2023 12:03

I am right handed and most things like computer mouse, knives I use with my right hand?

Not skin irritation, they are defined scratches, also no itching or discomfort in any way but always the same hand and always the same pattern.

A clawed goblin? Or perhaps an elf, which is smaller. Whatever it is, it's persistent. Apply moisturiser regularly as that's a well known remedy.

HamstersAreMyLife · 02/10/2023 12:05

I've had almost the same but more in the centre of my palm. Isn't it just dry skin and it peels where your hand creases?

3dogsandarabbit · 02/10/2023 12:08

Our palms have many lines on them, if you look at where those lines are OP they are in the natural creases of your palm caused by dry skin. I get them sometimes, nothing to worry about, just keep your hands well moisturised and they will soon go.

Something scratchy in a pocket or where you tuck a bed in? In a bag you push your hand into? A glove or a push down door handle?

bellac11 · 02/10/2023 12:12

Zip on the edge of a coat pocket?

WaitingfortheTardis · 02/10/2023 12:13

I used to get them from the gearstick on my Mini, it took me a while to realize it was that.

Definitely this

Ohthatsabitshit · 02/10/2023 12:53

Do you open the car door with your left hand?

CarpeVitam · 02/10/2023 13:06

You're possessed?

Handsnotwands · 02/10/2023 14:11

i kept getting similar and it was from the lid of my water bottle

or yes, stigmata and you're now a saint - congratulations

Myneighboursnorlax · 02/10/2023 14:12

If you close your fist do your fingernails line up with the scratches? Just wondering if you’re clenching your hands at night without realising

lemontart13 · 12/04/2024 10:23

I understand this might sound far-fetched, but those scratches could be signs of something more than just physical. It could be demonic scratches. They can manifest inexplicably and repeatedly, and they appear in a consistent pattern, especially in threes, which is concerning.
If you're open to it, there are steps you can take to protect yourself spiritually, covered in this article about unexplained scratches. Some are playing praise music, reading Scripture aloud, or reciting the Lord's Prayer. You could also wear or carry blessed religious items like a cross, rosary, or scapular, which could provide a sense of spiritual protection.
Approach this with an open mind and consider consulting with a religious or spiritual advisor who may offer additional guidance and support.
