What on Earth is this in my kitchen and why?

I've been in the house a year and just noticed.
I mean the hingy flappy thing. Why would I need to get into the side of this drawer?

What do you mean? Isn't it just the side of the drawer?

I needed to get in mine so I could take the front off to paint it. It you damage the front you can just get a new one instead of a whole drawer. They are quality sliders on those drawers.

It swings inward on a kind of hinge. Sorry I didn't explain that very well. You can lift it up so the two sides are horizontal but they just fall if you let go so it doesn't create a surface or anything.

Oh, sorry. I thought you meant the flap that said ‘Blum’.

It’s just a way to stop small things falling out of a deeper drawer. They use the same small drawer runners and then the pierced flaps bits are clipped on to a deeper back and drawer front.
My deep drawer just has 2 rails as they are a pan drawer so not for small stuff.

Oh I see sort of. So it's and insert but what is the purpose of it swinging?

I don’t see the swinging as a design feature, more that it’s cheaper to have it just clip onto the top rail, and it does the job fine, rather than adding more fixings that would be hard to add retrospectively to the solid drawer runners to stop it swinging.

This says that it adds more storage and it ‘simply clips on’
