What is the most exciting thing that has ever happened in your village or small town?

Obviously when you live in a big city, newsworthy stuff is happening all the time. If you've lived in small towns you know that it's often slim pickings for the local papers and it can be quite exciting when something happens close to you. What's the biggest local news story you remember from your town?

The most dramatic thing that ever happened where I live now (in my memory) is the body of a whale washed up on the beach. Sadly it was already dead so there was no rescue possible but so many people went to see it - quite a grisly and depressing sight but also impressive to see an animal of that size I suppose. I didn't go, partly because I had the kids with me and I didn't think a dead animal was something they'd enjoy (or me tbh) but loads of people took their kids Confused It was certainly quite an event and everyone was talking about it.

In my childhood village there was once a man running round at night dressed in a gimp suit and frightening the villagers.

During COVID, wild turkeys were wandering around the town

That was quite a moment

Also had a small earthquake

pastypirate · 01/10/2023 18:03

The gimp suit rings a bell.

Sadly where I live it was a mass shooting 2 years ago. And no I don't think that was exciting it was horrific but it did mean national press sadly.

A lady a few doors down bought what she thought was a ‘micro pig), turned out to be a tiny baby pig and eventually ended up fully grown and massive. She had to donate to the farmer who owned the farm behind our row of houses, pig is still going 6 years later and we were later informed it was the only pig on the farm and kept as a lively pet.

An Asda delivery driver reversed into a wee wall , it made the village Facebook page and had 170 comments

"Next door " app talked about it for months

Puffinshop · 01/10/2023 18:08

I'm sure the gimp suit man wasn't a unique offender - I suppose there are perverts everywhere but this one did have a more unusual approach than most.

Childhood home was very near the epicenter of an earthquake.

Where I live now is not far from a village where up until recently there was a man in a gimp suit running around and squirming about in front office people Grin I believe the police finally apprehended the suspect.

Couple got married. The bride slept with one of the male guests on the wedding night while the groom was comatose from too much booze. A very small village.

Another night a horse got out of its yard and was hit by a car late at night. The female passenger was heavily pregnant and the horse went through the windscreen. The woman and her husband were not physically injured but the horse left one of its front legs in her lap before it hobbled off and collapsed a few yards later. The psychological effects were enormous.

In a village in the west country a farmworker could be seen sitting on a fence defecating over the side in full view of passing cars. This was his morning dump at 9am. He had spent some time inside for shagging cows.

Serial killer

CleMNtine · 01/10/2023 18:14

Someone was shot in the local pub.

This was The Cotswolds 20+ years ago.

I love that this is the most major thing that came to mind. Grin

My SIL lives in a town where the local paper once printed a 2 page obituary of a horse. It had colour photos and a poem and heartfelt comments from people who knew the horse.

A neighbour opposite once put their wheelie bin out two days early

Silkiebunny · 01/10/2023 18:17

We had a new thatched roof put on, that made the main story of the village monthly newsletter.

We are getting female painters to paint the outside of house soon so sure that will gather an audience. 😂

Freezingcoldinseptember · 01/10/2023 18:17

Canoe man lived along my road...

HeechulOppa · 01/10/2023 18:19

Someone shot a porno at various locations around the village, including in the doorway of the village pub.

OK wow. That has got to be a contender for best local story. Did you ever meet him? Before he 'died'?

William and Harry attended a wedding ( once!)

CeeJay81 · 01/10/2023 18:21

A horrid child murder a decade ago unfortunately. Generally nothing very exciting happens though and that really rocked the whole community.

mothergod · 01/10/2023 18:24

We have a naked cyclist every so often during the summer.

Whattheflipflap · 01/10/2023 18:25

Incredibly outing
but DH Is from a hamlet of the town muse formed, we live there now and they were one year above him at school. Probably the most exciting thing to happen and it was like 20-30 years ago

most tragic thing to happen here was a dead baby found in a brook /creek and they never found mum 😞

weirdest thing. There’s a man who seems to only eat bananas buying a bunch a day from the supermarket

Whattheflipflap · 01/10/2023 18:26

Also Geri halliwel holidaying here. 😂

MrsMorseEndeavour · 01/10/2023 18:26

A few months ago a pig escaped and went in the local pub. Made national news (well, DM)

Whattheflipflap · 01/10/2023 18:27

Oh and people holidaying here with loads of ferrets on leads at the beach

essentially I moved somewhere weird as fuck for a man. 🫣😂😂

PuttingDownRoots · 01/10/2023 18:27

Technically the next village but the peacock situation seems to make the national news more and more frequently.

Ketzele · 01/10/2023 18:28

The prison break terrorist who was on the run last week was at school with my eldest [pride].

We featured in a Benny Hill song.

ladygindiva · 01/10/2023 18:34

Bloke stabbed his grandma to death
Kate Winslet came in the local
