My eldest daughter has decided she wants to dress up as Dwight from The Office so I need to dye a school shirt mustard yellow.

Apart from a bad dye job on my own hair I’ve never dyed anything.

I have bought 2 packs of Dylan sunshine yellow and one pack of espresso brown (because I couldn’t find any mustard). My plan is one pack of the yellow and a tiny bit of the brown to make mustard. If I mix the due in a regular glass jug will it stain? I don’t really have anything to mix the dye in, I thought I could just mix it all on the tub I’m using to actually dye the shirt.

Any tips or suggestions on how to make this process any easier?

My suggestion is to go round local charity shops!

Is it a cotton shirt? If so it'll probably take the dye okay. If it's polycotton, less so. If it's entirely synthetic it will probably not take dye well.

do you have a washing up bowl?

poundshop nearby for a larger plastic container?

if you have canvas shopping bags, those are great to test the colour. or white cotton knickers.

colour takes best if the garment is evenly wet before adding it to the colour.
if you use softener you need to wash with just detergent before hand.

I tried looking in the charity shops for a kids short-sleeve mustard shirt, no luck! Even the likes of Shein didn’t have anything.

i have bought a 3 pack of poly-cotton school shirts, according to the packet instructions it should take the colour ok. And I have some back-ups if it goes wrong. Nothing I can use to test the colour so I’m just going for it and hoping for the best!
