I want to log something to have it noted just in case, how do I do that with hr and if I request no action is taken is that allowed etc

The problem is I'm in education.

Can you give an example of what you mean.

A staff member speaking rudely and dismissively to me.

If I were your HR, I would place a file note on your HR records that this conversation had taken place and that would be the end of it. I wouldn't be placing any notes on the file of the employee that you complained about as no conversation will have taken place with them.

I would be advising you that while I will make a record, it would be more beneficial for all involved if you raise it informally directly with the person / your line manager / their line manager to resolve.

My actions would be different if there was already an ongoing formal process about this employee for issues along the same lines, but I would ask you to raise it formally. I would not tell you about the ongoing formal action due to confidentiality.

@Asiama thank you that's very helpful.

I will also be speaking to line manager but is there any benefit to me to log this with hr even if you couldn't openly say so?
If things blew up down the line?

I would speak to your line manager first and document the conversation on email and send to the line manager, so that if something does happen in the future then you have the history documented. I think I would only go to HR as an escalation point if you are unhappy with how your line manager responds.
