• Got to be a painting
• Your choice whether you remain as yourself, or become one of the characters/details in its style
• The painting is like a window into its larger world, ie you will not be confined to just that bit we see
• Bonus points for including a pic of your answer

A Bar at the Folies-Bergéres by Manet. Would love to sit at a table and take it all in.

I'd have to get someone else to order for me - she looks like she's judging my choice of drink very hard. The best bit of this painting is I look at it and can practically hear all the clinks of glassware and chatter.

Edward Hopper's Nighthawks.

Anything painted or drawn by my DD. She's so foreign to me, sometimes.

What an interesting thread.

The dance class by Degas for me.

The meeting on the turret stairs. I was lucky enough to see it in the National Gallery in Dublin. I think it is just amazing and so very sad, poignant and passionate. I'd like to be Hellelil's lady in waiting.

Good idea for a thread! I'll try to think of an 'explore', but what comes to mind at the moment is I'd quite like to be in some of Jack Vettriano's beaches. And I'd definitely like to snuggle up on the cushion in Hockneys dog paintings.

Obviously I would love to sit and watch the world go by in Van Gogh’s The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum.

I would also jump into Sir john everett millais painting and save Ophelia.

I haven’t been Ophelia, but I have sat at the Cafe Terrace in Arles. He painted many sites in Arles, when there I took present day photos and matched them with the paintings. The biggest contrast was The Yellow House, where he lived, is now an education college.

@embramum The garden and house at Giverny is well worth a visit. I’m myopic so I took my glasses off and felt like I was wandering through his paintings. Absolutely fantastic experience.

I have always wanted to step into the works of Dutch 17th century painters like de Hooch but now I think of it Bruegel would be interesting. Only not Hunters In The Snow or Peasant Wedding - The Proverbs would be more fun.

Nonplusultra · 04/10/2023 20:12

My choice is The Meeting on the Turret Stair by Frederic William Burton.

I'd like to explore it in an ethereal way.

I love massive storms! (as long as I'm in no actual danger)

Great thread!
Flaming June, as I’m missing summer?
The Tiepolo (?) last supper in the Louvre, with the man at the end of the table feeding a little dog titbits?
Déjeuner sur l’herbe? (Why are you naked when he has clothes on? How’s the water? Can I share the picnic?)
But actually, maybe this one @MariePaperRoses, as it’s a Sisley, that he painted in our town about 100 years ago - so I could wander about in the past here and see how everything was all that time ago. (Photo taken in Cardiff Museum).

Great thread.

After a fair bit of thought, it may not be very original, but I would give quite a lot to be an observer to the painting of Holbein's portrait of Henry VIII. There aren't many people who have changed the history of this country so much and so brutally. I would love to see him in the flesh. And I admire Holbein's painting so much, seeing him at work would be incredible.

Darn it! Link hasn't worked. Will try and paste it in the next post.

So many beautiful paintings. I have a couple.
La Belle Dame Sans Merci is a favourite painting and poem. Who was she?
Also the painting of Moulin Huet in Guernsey by Renoir. Oh to be paddling in the sea as a kid with now worries.

@Beebumble2 wow! That’s amazing.

I love the Brughel ones too. I’d like to be the lady in goggles bottom right in this one by Hendrik Averkamp.
