Or a bad one?

Love it op

FadedRed · 30/09/2023 12:52

Another interesting Cavendish fact: your everyday commonest banana is called a Cavendish, because it was crossbred in the glasshouse at Chatsworth.
IMO nice surname to choose.

Fortunately for most of us, the days where we need male permission not to engage in reactionary patriarchal nonsense are long gone.

The OP has a birth surname she already has and hasn’t mentioned so I assume it’s inoffensive. The rational for choosing a new joint name has gone.

She is widowed. Presumably quite young if the PIL were still around. Leave it.

What is nasty about it? Her husband didn’t get to decide on what the OP’s surname was, regardless of how he felt about being called Peter Onions or whatever.

Why pick on this aspect when her dh is deceased?
OP made her own decision at the time and is considering making another decision in the future.
you may not agree with her reasons or her decision, but that's entirely irrelevant to the OP.
Theres no reason at all she has to revert to her original surname. She's not asking your permission 🙄

Carretera · 30/09/2023 12:56

I associate the name with poshness, same surname as the Dukes of Devonshire.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 30/09/2023 13:03

I do like bananas & I once read the Mitford girls biography so the tenuous links are really stacking up now.

I always found it odd the Duke of Devonshires family live in Derbyshire but the Earl of Derby ancestral home is near Liverpool because it’s the Liverpool Derby not the Derbyshire Derby.

@FormerlyPathologicallyHappy Cavendish is lovely but Carrington is even lovelier IMHO and you only have yourself (and DCat) to please now so...?

heldinadream · 30/09/2023 13:13

@FormerlyPathologicallyHappy Carrington because then you will remind people of the two artists, Dora C and Leonora C. This is why it would be my choice if I was changing my name and could choose between Cavendish and Carrington.

I’ve changed it on Insta now. Cavendish it is.

I owe it to the cat.

Why not go the full hog and go for Windsor.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 30/09/2023 13:27

Puddy Windsor 🤔, no we’re back to fictional village in Midsomer Murders territory there.

Also we never visited Windsor Castle but we did Chatsworth, Hardwick Hall and Old Hardwick Hall.

I guess it depends on your age. It makes me think of Cavendish education because DD is in one of their schools lol

If I had to choose a new surname for myself I'd pick Wilde.

I know someone called Wilde. She grew up in a commune (in Wales maybe..) and lots of the kids were given Wilde as a surname rather than their parents’ names. She quite liked it.

The Op is having fun choosing a new name

You sound like you could do with a bit more fun Lady Kathleen

Us MN aristos should stick together

Well it sounds like you've made a decision, so long as the cat's happy.....

The name's Cat, Cat Cavendish 😻

After Barbara.

Cavendish is satisfying to say but not sure I could carry off the poshness.

I do prefer Wilde or Fox. Or Kinsella - another satisfying name to say.

Dragonsandcats · 30/09/2023 14:03

I think it’s a lovely name.

Jellybean23 · 30/09/2023 14:10

I like it. But in for a penny, in for a pound, why not go double barrelled, Farquhar Cavendish. 🤪

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/09/2023 14:15

The Duke of Devonshire should really be the Duke of Derbyshire but the King got it wrong.

Really? That sounds fascinating. How did it happen?

wagnbobble · 30/09/2023 14:21

Like others I just immediately think of the Devonshire family ( Chatsworth etc) so lovely name . Met the Duke last summer as he took some guests round the garden on a golf cart , real character and total gentleman!

sunshinesupermum · 30/09/2023 14:38

Very posh. I once worked with a Juliette Cavendish and she was from landed gentry!

Violinist64 · 30/09/2023 15:14

Cavendish is quite a posh village in West Suffolk and is where Lady Sue Ryder, of charity shops fame, lived. Her husband was a Sir. I like the name very much and it is much nicer than either my maiden name or my married name (sorry, DH).
