Does anyone have a tattie soup recipe please!?

I'm having such a craving for a big pot of goodness but I cannot remember my mums recipe.

Her family were brought up near Glasgow if that helps and I remember us standing for hours it felt like! grating carrots and turnip and tatties for it but can't remember the rest.

Can anyone help please 🙏

I was brought up near Glasgow and my Mum, who was actually Irish, made a great tattie soup.

I couldn't tell you the whole recipe. It had tatties in it of course, leeks and onions too. The most important thing is to start with a good proper stock. Preferably one made from a cheap cut of meat my mother called "boiling beef".

fandjango · 28/09/2023 22:01

In my mind I have her boiling ham stock and then taking that out and adding the rest?

Definitely grated carrot and turnip and some of the tatties and then big cubed tatties and leeks now you mention it.

All the recipes i've looked at are chopped veg and we were chief graters so it's not those!

might just wing it. Hope it tastes the same!!

that sounds like a broth recipe - grated onion, carrot, swede/turnip, dried soup mix and a boiled ham hock pre soaked and shredded and some vegetable stock.
havent made that for ages and it's great done in a slow cooker.
dumplings made with a smidge of colmans mustard powder in lifts it to the comfort food of my childhood

Just wing it! Carrots, turnips, leek, tatties. Whatever stock you like. Parsley if you can.
I’d avoid onion, it turns more quickly with onion in.

Never come across a bad one yet😁

fandjango · 28/09/2023 22:20

i'm actually drooling!!

I'm gonna have to chuck it all in and teach my 2 yr old how to grate like his elders had to!! 😂

Thanks for the tips!!

My mum makes it just with tatties, onions and leeks for veg. Veggie stock, then nutmeg and thyme to season. Lots of pepper too. She doesn't peel the tatties.

Love tattie soup the only thing I can remember from mums soup is it wasn’t blended and was chunky…don’t know if that’s helpful but from what I remember:
tatties
carrots
leak
onion
turnip
shit load of veg broth

but once you make it I will take a bowl with 3 slices of buttered pan bread please 😂🤍

xx

Is that potatoes? I make a lovely potato and leek soup (BBC good Food). Really tasty!

LaviniasBigBloomers · 28/09/2023 22:39

Big splash of milk just before you serve it to make it creamy, mash it through rather than blending it, and more pepper than is normally feasible - ready ground white pepper mind, none of that pepper mill nonsense.

I really want my grandma now.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 28/09/2023 22:41

Oh and you have to peel the potatoes for tattie soup. (I don't if I'm doing any other kind of soup with potatoes in it, but it's essential to peel for tattie soup.)

That’s tattie and leek soup which is a different but equally delicious thing from tattie soup. 😁

if you leave the tatties out the tattie soup and put lentils in instead you can make lentil soup too.

This was like going home in a bowl. The taste, the smell, the memories ❤️

My husband devoured a bowl full despite arguing with me about what tattie soup is as he's from the borders and is adamant this is not tattie soup! he enjoyed it anyway!

My toddler managed a fair bit too and he's been under the weather this week so i'm very happy with that.

Thanks for all the tips!
