Song lyrics that bug you!

I was listening to Objects in the rear view mirror by Meatloaf the other day and it contains the line:

"If life is just a highway, then the soul is just a car"

That line always bugged me - for a start that's a pretty big "if" but apart from that surely in that analogy the body is the car and the soul is the driver?!

Another one is maybe a bit more Niche but Tim Minchin has a song called "Grew on me" where he likeness his love for his wife with various illnesses (it's actually much more sweet than that makes it sound!) which contains the line:

"The successful removal of you would probably kill me too"

Surely if it kills the patient you can't call it a successful removal?! What really bothers me is “the attempted removal of you” would fit the song just as well and make more sense!

Anyway I'm bored at work so thought I'd see if anyone else has any pedantic lyrical bugbears?!

Moody blues, in your Wildest dreams,,, " Our bodies felt the morning dew" really cringey but it's a good song.

Don't know who sings it (poss Ed Sheeran?) but there's a song that was on the radio almost constantly not long ago, with a line something like:
'driving at 90 on these country roads'

The song seems to be reminiscing about fund stuff he did when he was younger. I live in the countryside and it really irritates me that this song seems to be suggesting that driving like a dick in the countryside is just a bit of harmless fun. I may be showing my inner grumpy old woman.

Im pretty sure its- driving at 19...

This morning at 4.50
I took her rather nifty
Down to an incubator
Where 30 minutes later
She gave birth to a daughter
Within a year a walker.

Squeeze, Up the Junction.

Do you know what an incubator is?

and how can you be singing about this morning but referring to what happens in a year’s time.

Always annoyed by “I’m as serious as a cancer, when I say rhythm is a dancer”. Surely in the process of song writing you’d think sure, it rhymes but we we can’t use that!

Is this not a reference to her English ex’ family? Having tea bitching about her? Also nice elongation of the ssssss on agrees to echo snakes etc.

misses point of thread

Alanis Morisette “Ironic” without examples of irony.

Although releasing a song called Ironic with lots of examples of Irony, all of which are just bad luck and not Irony is very Ironic! Maybe she intended that all along?

"From the subway to my home, endless ringing on my phone"

Well then why not answer it David?

"Are we human or are we dancer". And it is "dancer" singular.

Can dancer(s) be human too? I think so.

That one has always really bugged me. So glad I'm not alone.
There are going to be loads if these...great thread!

"don't want clever conversation
Don't want to work that hard, no love
I just want some, someone to talk to
I want you just the way you are"

Fuck you Barry, I can do clever conversation!

What bugs me more about that song is 'great, great, great grandaughter is pretty fine'...wouldn't there be a lot more greats that far in the future? I get that wouldn't fit but STILL

This was analysed on r4 'More or Less' ! You're right obviously.

Im pretty sure its- driving at 19...

Ahh that would make more sense!!

It’s one of my favourite songs but that part has bugged me as like the PP I too live in the countryside and feel like it’s glamourising speeding through the lanes.

But also I’d say it’s almost impossible to drive at 90mph round the lanes and so that annoyed me even more!

But if it’s driving at 19 then that makes so much more sense!!

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 28/09/2023 22:08

Another Craig David one:

"I gave you my jacket for you to hold, told you to wear it 'cos you felt cold"

Oh so it at first you were just using the poor girl as a coat rack, and then she happened to feel cold so you TOLD her to wear it?!

Ed Sheeran doesn't sing 90 miles per hour though. If it's 90 km/hr that is legal on the country roads round here (I live 10 miles away from the castle on the hill). It is inadvisable on the very windy ones though.

Cart me off to Pedants' Corner now.

He might be OK on the A12 but I wouldn't want to attempt 90kph on the lanes (also 10 miles from the castle, give or take).

@WhatapityWapiti Lady Godiva was also a character who drove a racing car in Whacky Races, so it could be "I'm a racing car like Lady Godiva"

WhateverMate · 28/09/2023 22:16

Mike Oldfield - Moonlight Shadow.

"Four a.m. in the morning, carried away by a moonlight shadow".

4am in the morning? As opposed to what? 4am in afternoon?? 🤔

junbean · 28/09/2023 22:16

Taylor Swift needs to go back to elementary school- her lyrics are rife with errors like "sometimes I always.."

If I'm listening to the radio and the lyrics make no sense I know it's her and it is every time.

Bay City Rollers - Bye Bye Baby

Wish I never had known you better
Wish I knew you before I met her, gee
How good it would be for me
Should've told her that I can't linger
There's a wedding ring on my finger
She's got me, but I'm not free,

I mean, good for you mate that you’re declining to.cheat on your wife, but jeez you could at least act like you love her rather than treating her like a shackle!

To dig a bit deeper, that song dates from a time when people married young, often under social pressure. He's still just a lad, realising that forever is very hard work.

All of Olivia Rodrigo - get some boundaries, woman!

And this too:

Baby these things you're doing, believe me
They hurt so bad
But it's worth all the misery
Don't you know that it's hurts so good
Hurts so good
Ooh boy please don't ever
Take the heat off me
Cos it would hurt even more
If you'd ever leave
Even though sometimes
It's hard to me to bear
I make myself hold on
Cos if it kills me I don't care
Cos baby I don't want you to ever quit
Ooh, it ain't no good 'til it
Hurts just a little bit

For god's sake Susan Cadogan - LTB

Frigging 24 Hours From Tulsa. I hate it (although love Gene Pitney and have seen him in concert).

The guy is writing to his 'dearest darling' to tell her that he met another woman on his way home, shagged her, fell in love with her and now he won't be coming home any more.

He 'hates to do this to her' but then goes into forensic detail about what he did with the other woman!
"And I caressed her, kissed her
Told her I'd die before I would let her out of my arms"

Yeah, you seem really sorry, you heartless twat.

I always think the same about "unfaithful" by Exit Eden

The whole thing is about how she's cheating on her partner, but the tone is how sorry we should feel for her because it's put her in such emotional turmoil!

Oh god, just thought of another song with very disturbing lyrics - Stooshe with “Black Heart”

I don't like it when you break me honey
Why'd you have to do that?
Tell me when you'll make these tears keep falling
Do you feel like a man?
Figure, figure there's no working you out whatsoever
Only one way I can sum you up altogether
You got a black heart
Daddy I've fallen for a monster
Somehow he's scaring me to death
He's big and bad
I love him like mad
Momma, he's the best I ever had
Daddy I've fallen for a monster
He got a black heart

Just no words.

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 28/09/2023 22:27

"Every girl wants you to be her man
But I'll wait right here 'til it's my turn"

Girl, you need to work on your self esteem!
