How best to photograph something sparkly so you can see the sparkles?

I've finished making part of my outfit for The Eras Tour & would like to take a few photos but not sure how best to take them so you can see that it sparkles. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated!

Tia 🙂

Flash? X

I think there are filters that make sparkles sparkly on camera. I know insta has some, but I'm sure other apps will have this feature.

lucysmam · 28/09/2023 20:42

@topshotta flash doesn't really help, unfortunately 😢

@fedupofbeingbroke I will have a look at some apps other than my camera, thank you.

A dark background (do you have a dark wall? Or a dark sheet you could hang as a backdrop?) and playing with light sources will help. Avoid one big overhead light source, you want multiple smaller lights (lamps or torches?) lower down. It’s also easier to capture sparkle on video than in a still photo, if that would be any good.

An app or photoshop to put the sparkles in afterwards

lucysmam · 28/09/2023 21:44

@elizzza if I can find something to "wear" it then yes, a video is a good idea, thank you.

If not, I'll investigate adding sparkles to a photo with a different app.

You'll lose detail, but fairy lights in a fairly dark room can work.

You need to adjust it in post as well to bring it out, so fiddle with contrast and brightness to get the best results.

A short video of a swish is going to be the most effective, again in darker lighting with spots of light to pick it out.

WereYouListeningToTheDudesStory · 28/09/2023 21:56

Oh and if you're not wearing it, just sweep the camera a few degrees.

Give your camera/phone a tiny wee jiggle as you take the pic. The sparkles will show up then. You might need to do this 28 times before you get a shot you’re satisfied with! I use sparkly fabric a lot and this works for me.

Honeyroar · 28/09/2023 22:22

Shine a light on it then take the photo?

Pepsipepsi · 28/09/2023 22:41

Once you've figured it out please post a picture here! I love all the concert outfits that get posted online. They're so creative!

lucysmam · 30/09/2023 10:37

@Pepsipepsi my finished Midnights garter.

I've given up trying to get better photos & work out how to add sparkle after 🙈. It is very sparkly irl though!

I've managed to make my shoes show their sparkle but I can't seem to post it
