Olive/warm green paint

Help! I have a small, West facing living room which receives very natural little light and I'm struggling to find the perfect paint. I initially decided that white would brighten the room up but unfortunately, it has the opposite effect and makes it look gloomy , flat and like a dirty grey. I then went for a feature wall ( chimney breast) in a deep forest green but it looks unbalanced and lacks cohesion.

I'm thinking a warm green on May be two walls would liven things up, but which green?! I'm liking overtly olive by dulux but is that a warm green? I should add that I have also painted the walls in pebble shore which promised a light grey but looked purple in the strong afternoon light ( only get this light for a couple of hours in the late afternoon / early evening due to the house surrounded by talk buildings). So anything grey based looks weird and cold.

It's quite a quandary as I've always had South facing sitting rooms so paint colours was easy peasy before! My furniture is largely mid century modern so essentially dark wood, and the sofa is charcoal French connection zinc.

Can anyone recommend colours that may work or even better, have some photos they wouldn't mind sharing ? Thanks!

Little Greene 'olive colour' - love it in my living room

Orangeinmybluelightcup · 27/09/2023 19:41

My east facing living room is overtly olive on two walls! I really like it. Did one wall initially then liked it so much added another.

Brieandbeetroot · 27/09/2023 19:47

@PaintingPains we've had lots of compliments on the colour so it's not too marmite. The fabric we have is William Morris Little Chintz in olive/ochre, just to give an idea of colours. Good luck with your choice!

First photo is from their website and true to colour. Second photo is our wall but it looks a bit different as taken just now at night with the light on

F&B peignoir is a beautiful neutral colour that may work well instead of grey, and we have F&B treron which is a stunning muted green. Definitely get a B&Q colour match though it works out a lot cheaper than F&B plus i think its better paint

You're all too kind. I've gone from feeling hopelessly lost to a lot more positive that the perfect colour exists ! Thanks for the heads up about a paint match at b and q - I've never used that before how does it work exactly??

We're half way through painting our small, north facing living room. We inherited 50 shades of beige in this house, not to mention the most immense selection of blown vinyl....

Anyway we are painting it this colour

www.valsparpaint.co.uk/paint-colours/greens/brussels-sprouts/

It looks great. It's warm but not gloomy. We have dark grey sofa and armchair and the rest of our furniture is mid-century.

I'm very happy with it

PaintingPains · 27/09/2023 20:52

@NotaTAnow

Ooh now that's nice as well and your furniture sounds very similar to mine. The names a bit off putting but other than that...

Go to the psint desk with anything in the colour you want say a piece of fabric or card and they can colour match as well as the pre made colours they have on the test cards theres loads but if say you want an expensive paint brand take the colour chart you have and ask for them to match it. They have some pre mixed colours matched to F and B in their system already. They arent an exact match but they are close.
Plus you can buy a tester pot in 5 years time and they can make it again using the exact sam3 formula and you can do your touch ups with it for only £4.50 (I've just done a whole wall.)

I think you might prefer a slightly lighter shade. Jurassic Stone is like overtly olive but a little lighter. Don't get the "once" version. It's shite.

EddieMunson · 28/09/2023 07:58

I used Crushed Aloe by Dulux in my living room. It’s a really nice light olive, with brown undertones.

We have B&Q Limerick in two rooms. One is a dark bedroom and one is a bright ensuite and its perfect in both. Love it and quite tempted to do the whole house in it.

Stickytreacle · 28/09/2023 08:13

I have overtly olive in my kitchen, it is lovely but can be a bit gloomy in darker rooms.
I've found dulux Mossy Stone gives the same effect but a lighter shade which isn't as gloomy in a dark room.

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

Would you say it's a warm green? I can't face painting it and getting it wrong again! Such strange light in this room

It's definitely a warm green, and not too sickly either. I would probably just do your feature wall with it then see if your space can handle any more. Teo coats max!

F&B peignoir looked depressing in our low light hallway so I'd probably not go for this one personally OP. But their samples are easy enough to find.

barbarahunter · 28/09/2023 08:44

I've just ordered some stick-on paint sample squares from Lick. They are apparently completely removable and better, in my opinion, than having to paint on the colour from a little pot.

PaintingPains · 28/09/2023 11:18

@Greenishpurpleblue
Thank you, that's interesting. I've always seen those paint mixing desks instore but tbh I've lazily always picked paint from the shelf, not really understanding what they do! I didn't know you could get branded paints like f&b mixed. I thought they'd be copy written or something! See, I'm clueless !

I'm starting to worry that this night be the case in my living room. I love the tone of overtly olive but maybe a lighter paint is needed

Just checked that out... Nice colour. Do you think it would be ok as a feature colour though as I would only be painting obe/ two walls? Or would you say it's more of an all over neutral paint?

I painted our north facing sitting room F&B yeabridge green last year. It's a gorgeous warm green.

Hmmm a few posters have mentioned this colour and it seems to sit well in both light and dark rooms. Will her a tester pot for this too

We've painted one of our rooms in Crown's Light Fern which is a warm green, really like this shade
https://crownpaints.co.uk/product/light-fern/

That's definitely the sort of colour I would like!it doesn't look too dark either. On the list thanks!
