That “eating crap when on your period” cliche is becoming true!

I’m not sure if it’s a self fulfilling prophecy and I’m using my period as an excuse to eat crap, or if I am genuinely craving crap because I’m in my period, but oh my god I need sweet things today.

I’ve had periods for over half my life so far but this is new within the last few months.

Literally the only time I crave sweet things is immediately before my period arrives.

My period is early this month and now, looking back, I’ve been wanting chocolate for about a week now.

Oh, and this isn’t a “how could you eat more than one square without feeling full” post. I’m by no means skinny; my junk food of choice is just not normally chocolate.

Is this some sort of thing that happens as we get older? I’m only in my mid 30s but my mum had early menopause; although I really don’t think it could be that. I did get my tubes removed about a year ago but the chocolate thing didn’t happen for months after that. Also definitely not pregnant.

I was feral for chocolate from a teen until menopause and now I can go months without. And I do mean feral where I used to cry if i couldn't go to the shops. Now chocolate (or sweets) no longer tempt me even if the rest of the family eat it in front of me.

It's been a very strange feeling to process.

I definitely crave different things depending on my hormones. I don’t have regular periods so sometimes I don’t even realise until it comes and I think ‘ah yes, that’s why I was craving carbs for a few days!’ and it makes sense. Never really craved chocolate but I guess at certain times our bodies crave what’s in some foods if we need it.

I’ve never had a sweet tooth - I probably eat about a chocolate bar per month or similar - but recently, for maybe four days before my period and four days during, I eat a bar a day and could happily double or even triple that.

And it’s not even good chocolate I want. Normally I’d rather have a small amount of higher quality/dark chocolate, but gimme four cadburys bars now please. Quickly.

That’s exactly what happened! My period isn’t due for about 5 days but turned up unexpectedly, and now all the chocolate makes sense

I crave carbs every day so I wouldn’t bay an eyelid at that.

I always know two or three days before mine as I crave curry chips 🤤 it's very random as I'd never think of them normally.

I heard somewhere that a craving for chocolate might actually be a craving for magnesium, so you could try taking a magnesium supplement?

Same thing happens to me. 3 weeks out of the month I don't have any kind of sweet tooth, I have a pretty boring healthy diet actually. That one week of the month, however, (starting around 2 days before period) I'll crave chocolate as soon as I wake up in the morning and have to grab a Twix or something from the snack drawer to have with my morning coffee.
It's always been a thing for me, there's nothing wrong with me as far as I'm aware.

I have been eating cleaner/better for the last 5 months but the 2-3 days before my period I just want to eat carbs, I happily eat naan breads for my evening meal 😂 then the other 27ish days of the month im happy with less stodgy meals.

I'm like this and nowadays I just go with it. I do make sure though that I'm also eating good food and, particularly, good sources of protein in this phase as otherwise the dive after the sugar hit isn't pretty. So basically I end up eating really good proper food for my meals plus a load of chocolate/cake/biscuits.

I'm a believer in listening to what my body wants and if for five days of the month it's a ton of chocolate, so be it!
