I'm re-listening to them all because I'm a saddo and I've just noticed that in TB Strike tells Tufty's wife to get a shit hot lawyer for her divorce!!!

JKR is definitely a mumsnetter!!

Calmdown14 · 01/11/2023 17:25

@LilacpointMummy me too. I am struck by the contrast between the Strike of TB and the Running Grave.
She has really done a great job of moving them both forward emotionally and making them more likeable (even though I thought I liked them on initial reading!)

Calmdown14 · 02/11/2023 20:31

Can anyone recommend me something else to listen to on audible in a Strike like vein as I am feeling slightly bereft having finished them.

I like the Richard Osman books but the narrator was too much so I have returned book 3 as I'd rather read it in physical form.

have you read Jane Casey‘s Maeve Kerrigan books @Calmdown14 ? Great series where the lead characters grow on you.

Calmdown14 · 02/11/2023 21:25

Thanks @RollingInTheAisles

I haven't but the description sounds like it should be right up my street!

I hope you like them! The first one is good but they really grow on you after the second or so.

LadyPeterWimsey · 02/11/2023 23:24

The Maeve Kerrigan books are an excellent read during the wait for Strike 8.

Thedrownedprophet · 02/11/2023 23:42

I always go back to Ann Cleeves, but I'll try Maeve Kerrigan too

Not at all on topic but I ate lunch at Il Portico this week. Truly delicious pasta. I'm not a London resident so can't say if Robin was right with her opinion of "the best pasta in London" but it was certainly impressive. Lovely staff too.

MorrisZapp · 03/11/2023 18:03

There's a programme on the iplayer just now called The Hidden Children of Ruinerwold Farm, it's a documentary about a cult like family whose father hid them from the world on a remote farm in the Netherlands. There were nine children, the older ones left when they were able.

The guy was just a classic cult leader, messianic, narcissistic and utterly deranged. It's a disturbing watch but it feels so timely after reading Grave.

A warning, it contains descriptions of all types of child abuse. The adult children are intelligent and insightful and make compelling witnesses to an insanity they still can't quite untangle.

I’ve not been there but I’m tempted! I guess everyone’s opinion of “the best pasta in xxx” will be different depending on their own preferences. I live in London.

I think there was a pub in the RG called The Feathers which sounded very cosy.
It also featured in a tv crime series ...

Figment1982 · 13/11/2023 14:05

Sorry, a bit late to this party. It actually took me way longer to read than I expected.. mainly because at one point I got so stressed about Robin being in the cult I had to stop reading for a couple of weeks! Very unusual reaction from me.

I think the Strike & Ellacott Files podcast reassured me on the Bijou pregnancy worries.. they pointed out that her and Strike had sex in March, and she came to him in July saying she had only just found out.. and was not showing as pregnant.

However, I can see Robin becoming accidentally pregnant. I am hoping that the reference to condoms was simply to stave off any reader worrying about that aspect as it had been made clear she had been off her birth control.. but of course that just makes readers think about it more!

I'm also convinced that JKR is a My Dad Wrote A Porno fan... Bijou's real name is Belinda, and I spent the entire book just thinking of her as a sex-mad pots and pans saleswoman rather than a sex-mad lawyer.

Is that the one near Scotland Yard where Strike meets Wardle every time he persuades him to share a police file?

I’m not sure but I gave discovered a Strikr fan site which has all the pub/restaurant locations mentioned in the books!

But, being menopausal, I have forgotten what it’s called. But it looked very excellent for Strike fans.

Figment1982 · 13/11/2023 17:52

https://strikefans.com/locations/book-locations/

this one I assume!

BaconAndAvocado · 14/11/2023 08:34

Thanks Figment that's the one!
It's brilliant 💗

BaconAndAvocado · 14/11/2023 08:35

Started watching The Lazarus Project last night on Sky.
It's a time travelling series and has nine other that Strike actor Tom Burke in it sporting a Northern accent.
It's brilliant.

I got confused with the two Rosies. One had converted to Hinduism and Dev was going to try to meet her online. The other turned out not to be the girl in the photo, but I can't remember why either one is supposed to be relevant.

Absolutely loved the book though - for sure the best Strike (or should we say Ellacott?) so far.

fluckityfluckfluck · 16/11/2023 17:08

I've just listened through again. It's definitely set up for the brother to make an appearance in the next one....I just love this series so much.

KillingMeDeftly · 16/11/2023 17:13

I wonder if the final book in the series will be Strike solving the mystery of Leda's death?

That would be terrific.

KillingMeDeftly · 16/11/2023 17:56

Though I guess for there to be a mystery about it, the murderer would have to wind up someone other than Whittaker.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 16/11/2023 18:06

There’s a theory going round that it was Gillespie.
