Varifocal glasses, Monofocal contacts or Multifocal contacts?

Help! I finally admitted my vision isn't what it used to be in February. Since then, I've had glasses, separate pairs for reading and distance. They're great. I find I am more comfortable if I wear the distance glasses most of the time, but I never seem to have my reading glasses nearby when I need them, and it drives me mad. So, I'm thinking about getting either varifocal glasses, or some sort of contact lenses.

This is where I get unstuck. What do I go for? Is it madness to consider jumping straight to contacts? How do I know which sort will suit me best? What if I order something I don't get on with? And it's similar for varifocal glasses. DH has some and loved them, my mum has tried over and over with them and they always make her nauseous. What happens if I just can't use them?

I would really appreciate hearing anyone else's opinions about this!

I've had all three !
I'm fairly shortsighted (-6 both eyes) so have worn glasses since I was little, and contacts since I was 18.
When the middle aged reading eyes kicked in I got varifocal glasses. It did take a few attempts to get them right for me, but once you get them right..and adjust..they are fab.

However I work in a special school, and getting glasses knocked off my face is pretty frequent so I tend to wear contacts with cheap readers perched on my head.

I tried both monofocal contacts (distance one eye/reading the other) and varifocal contacts but simply could not get on with them.. they are not AS sharp as normal contacts for either distance or reading..the optician did explain, but basically there is a compromise, and my brain simply couldn't adjust.

If you've never worn contacts before I suspect it would be a bit of a leap straight to varifocal ones! BUT it's worth a trial.. Specsavers were very happy for me to try different options. Their dailies are great for normal wear.. I'm typing with mine in and Amazon cheapy readers over the top :)

Oh, thank you! This is super helpful!

I think it might try some glasses first. I think that wearing glasses actually quite suits me.

High street opticians will give you some free contacts to try before you buy. Contact prescriptions are not the same as glasses prescriptions so you need a different eye test too.

I have worn varifocal glasses for many years - they are brilliant and have been refined and improved over time. I have had no problems with them and would not like to be messing about with 2 pairs all the time.
