What are the small things in life that uplift your mood?

Saw a thread the other day about minor everyday things that piss you off, so thought I’d create one about the little, maybe mundane things, that automatically uplift your mood! I’ll start:

  • One of my favourite things is wearing clothes (mainly my nighties!) fresh out of the laundry. An unbeatable feeling.
  • The feeling when your phone turns on after being out of charge for some time.
  • Using a new toothbrush
  • Drinking a glass of COLD water or a drink after eating chocolate or a heavy bite, or after waking up from a nap.
  • Sleeping on freshly washed duvet covers and bedsheets.

A cup of tea in bed as soon as I wake up

A cold glass of good white wine

Writing in my diary

My children making me laugh

Horse riding

Reading a good book

A clean house

Coffee in silence in the morning.
A nice scented candle.
Watching the sunrise.
Walking the dog on the beach - especially early morning when we have the place to ourselves.
Fresh bedsheets and pyjamas.
When the sofa blankets are warm from the dryer.

cheapskatemum · 27/09/2023 08:05

Definitely sunshine for me: a beautiful sunrise, ditto sunset.
Sitting on my south facing, sun trap back patio in the warm sun.
Going for a walk through the countryside on a slightly cooler, but sunny day.
Sitting in my sun room when it's windy, or otherwise cooler, but sunny.
Oh, and conkers! Don't know why but I just love them.

GardenBea · 27/09/2023 09:05

Definitely freshly made bed, love it!
Seeing pink sunsets.
Going for a walk and seeing the sun coming through the trees and sound of leaves rustling in the wind.
When you spot a butterfly.
My cat purring in my lap.
When my house plants are doing well or get a new leaf.
When I have a day off to myself, having a slow day to do what I want.

LovelyDaaling · 27/09/2023 10:01

Sowing a tray of seeds and seeing the first one germinate.

Growing caterpillars in a jar , come down one morning to find the chrysalises have hatched in the night.

Watching my son be so gentle and caring with our pets

The smell of fabric conditioner on freshly washed clothes

Occasionally driving past my grandma and grandad's house on the way home from work and seeing the huge hydrangea is still blooming in the front garden after all these years that she used to let me help her prune as a kid (she's been passed away 12 years). The people who live there now will never know what joy seeing that gives me.

First coffee of the day and thinking about all the productive things I'm going to do (usually short lived but it gives me hope)

Re-watching a tv show I've really enjoyed knowing I'm going to re-enjoy it! 😂I seem to enjoy the familiarity of it and knowing I won't be investing time in something with a poor ending, because I've already seen it and therefore know it's worth the watch!

Watching Christmas cookery programmes imagining how this Christmas I'm not going to be last minute rushed off my feet, instead I'll be Nigella-esque laden in silk pjs, sipping espresso martini's while the homemade egg nog bubbles on the stove (yeah right!) but still, I love watching people cooking for Christmas and feeling inspired.

Pinteresting all sorts, hairstyles I'll never get and certainly never suit, recipes it's unlikely I'll ever make, home interiors I could only dream about and randomly Victorian era clothing for when I one day write a screenplay.

Which brings me to my last one, I love writing random snippets of stories in my notes in the hope one day they will spark the inspiration for me to write a novel.

If you haven't gathered, the mundane things that uplift my mood are procrastinating daily to avoid actually having to do the boring life admin stuff

I would stop and ask to take a cutting of the hydrangea. ☺️

Nannyfannybanny · 27/09/2023 10:52

First cuppa in the morning. Night one clean bedding. Going out in the garden early in summer, hearing the blackbird singing. Watching the cheeky robin right next to me. Going out to feed the fish, they all come up and say hi. A clean house. The grass cut, the smell and how it looks. Nice cold glass of white. Coming out of the hair dresser after colour,I don't have a blow-dry she does dry it,and it looks great. Dog walking on the beach.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/09/2023 10:59

Walking across London bridge twice a day on work days. It is a grey ugly bridge and the Thames is not at it's prettiest there - big and flat and grey and menacing. I love it! Especially at high tide after storms where there are pallets and tree branches and on one occasion a garden shed being swept along like leaves.

notprincehamlet · 27/09/2023 10:59

The smell of the sea (ideally appreciated from the deck of a superyacht but I fear that may not be in keeping with the spirit of the thread)

fr4zzledmum · 27/09/2023 11:02

A nice hot bath where you can see the steam rising from your legs out the water.

caffelattetogo · 27/09/2023 07:42

Reading my favourite childhood books to my children.

My DD(4.5) has just started having a chapter of a larger book at bedtime and it genuinely makes me so happy that we're experiencing a book together.

If that makes sense!

user1497207191 · 27/09/2023 11:04

For me, it's all about nature.

I just love waking up in the morning to see all the different varieties of birds on our bird feeders.

Then walking to walk along a canal footpath, enjoying the sight of the ducks, swans, herons, etc. (Used to enjoy looking at sheep and cows in the fields too, until the sods build a bloody huge housing estate on them!).

In Spring and Summer, it's watching the plants and flowers grow day by day.

scranscan · 27/09/2023 11:05

Honestly, popping the ring pull on an ice cold can of coke, full sugar of course and taking that first sip.

MariePaperRoses · 27/09/2023 11:12

A new lipstick.
Seeing a Robin.
Getting back home or to the car from a long dry hike with the dogs and then it starts to rain and I punch the air!
Some of my dogs are Sighthounds and occasionally they will remember their youth and have a mad few minutes racing (zoomies) like mad at what looks like 100mph!
My husband messaging to say he's coming home early.
Seeing two magpies.

erlangshen · 27/09/2023 11:18

-coming back from grocery shopping or whatever, get out of the car and look up seeing my DH working next to the window, he waves at me and I smile at him.

-my afternoon coffee with fresh cream and almond syrup

-lighting a nice candle or incense stick

-having a 10 mins message from DH ( with a message gun)

-receiving goodies in a large parcel from my parents abroad

-sleeping in freshly sun dried duvet and bedding

-spraying a nice perfume according to my mood

Beaverbridge · 27/09/2023 11:23

First cup of tea.
My 3 granddaughters. They make me the happiest I've ever been in my life.
Book shops just browsing then going for coffee.
Fresh bedding
Washing blowing on a line.
Meeting my partner on Saturday afternoon after he's finished work. Don't live together, he's always cheery.
Raking in charity shops.
