Anything similar to anchor butter and the anchor spread?

I bought I can't believe it's not butter light, in an attempt to both economise and stop myself eating it half an inch thick as I'm likely to do with lurpak.
Oh it's vile, put it on a piping hot jacket potato and it didn't even melt!!
I've not found anything spreadable comparable to lurpak and I'm avoiding trying President on the basis I will probably love it but my gallstones won't

therealcookiemonster · 27/09/2023 00:31

@Peaceandquietfinally and @AllProperTeaIsTheft its super quick and easy. double cream into a bowl, whisk (I prefer an electric whisk or stand mixer but hand whisk works too) until it seperates into watery buttermilk and solid clump of butter. then you are supposed to rinse it in cold water. but personally I just shape into a log, wrap in paper towel and usually it's gone before I can blink! takes less than 5 mins with electric whisk. ten with hand whisk. I couldn't believe how easy it was.
@AllProperTeaIsTheft house cows less easy but if you are getting one, I reccommend a miniature Highland cow.... totally adorable

Fallingthroughclouds · 27/09/2023 00:33

I love butter, but can't be bothered with the hardness in the fridge and can't eat it quickly enough to stop it going rancid if left out.

I 'upgraded' to flora buttery from supermarket own brands. Its the only one that vaguely resembles butter in flavour.

Fallingthroughclouds · 27/09/2023 00:34

Oh and hate Lurpak, not sure what that is supposed to be. Tastes nothing like butter or a spread substitute to me. It has a slightly cheesy taste.

Gillstuck · 27/09/2023 00:44

@therealcookiemonster that sounds absolutely delicious. I watched it being made like that on a youtube channel about the early American settlers (without the electric whisk bit). She had it with a flat bread cooked in an iron pot over an open fire. I didn't see a mini highland cow anywhere though.

SiobahnRoy · 27/09/2023 00:44

No downgrading here, just proper salted butter as usual. We keep it in a butter dish, it’s fine in cooler weather but in summer I slice some off and put it in a ramekin rather than have the whole slab out of the fridge.

caringcarer · 27/09/2023 00:46

I only use butter for to king really and buy either Aldo or Lidl, just wherever I'm shopping.

DiscoBeat · 27/09/2023 00:47

I've been buying Aldi butter for years - the salted one with crystals and the unsalted one for baking. I never buy butter substitutes.

DiscoBeat · 27/09/2023 00:51

2 packs a WEEK?! How many of you are there in the house?!
We use at least that. 4 in the house but someone will make a cake at least once a week (usually for someone else or for visitors), we make our own biscuits and for general use, like sandwiches or on corn etc.

DiscoBeat · 27/09/2023 00:54

I love butter, but can't be bothered with the hardness in the fridge and can't eat it quickly enough to stop it going rancid if left out.

We've got a little butter dish with a lid and put about a quarter of the pack in at a time, at room temperature.

SpringViolet · 27/09/2023 01:18

Tesco British spreadable salted 500g tub for £2.19 (not the horrible butterpak one). Best I’ve found for everyday use in many years of being a butter lover.

Better than Lurpak which I find quite bland and don’t understand the fuss about it. Definitely better than Anchor which seems to be more margariney now.

We probably use about 2-3 packs a week (6 of us) including in mash, on new potatoes, peas, rice, and in baking. Wouldn’t swop and don’t need to at that price.

ThirtyTwoGoingUnder · 27/09/2023 06:38

Get your Anchor from Costco if you have a membership. Think it's around £4 for a large 750g tub - lasts ages. We've stopped buying it from regular supermarkets

Pushkinini · 27/09/2023 07:15

Aldi Nordpak, but I bought that anyway.

PurBal · 27/09/2023 07:18

I’ve stopped buying own brand salted butter in favour of spread so I use less. It’s horrible though.

tapdancingmum · 27/09/2023 07:31

We use tesco own brand salted butter, which is about £1.97 a pack. I would buy Anchor or Lurpak if it was on offer but soon realised the blocks were smaller, so I have gone back to the Tesco one. We have a tupperware (old style) butter dish which lives in the cupboard and even in the hot weather the butter didn't go runny.

T bags - I'm a tetley girl and won't compromise on those. There are certain things I would downgrade and others I won't. I agree with a pp that cheap butter is OK but jam is Bonne Maman. It's only me that eats it so why have a meh one when I can have a nice one.

Elderflower14 · 27/09/2023 07:43

We use I Can't Believe as our spready butter and Muller butter in our local Co op. If we go to Aldi it's Norpak and own brand butter.

Fistralstorm · 27/09/2023 07:47

I've made a side switch from something in a yellow box from Aldi to Sainsburys Butter Soft spread as it's lovely. 500g for £2.19

linelgreen · 27/09/2023 07:56

Always buy Lurpak spreadable as nothing else tastes right. However cheaper generic butter is fine for cooking with.

SoShallINever · 27/09/2023 08:15

I love Lurpak, but can't stand Lurpak spreadable, there is far too much oil in it. For spreadable, President is good on bread and Nordpak is a passable alternative for baking.
I often make my own, it's really easy and you get lovely buttermilk for scones or to marinate chicken.

heartbroken22 · 27/09/2023 08:15

@lastchancesalmon true I might use butter as spread because it's healthier. I'll buy decent butter but will downgrade the spread if I can.

Country life from Lurpak.
Its cheaper and it’s British.

Country life isn't made by Lurpak. It's made by Saputo

heartbroken22 · 26/09/2023 22:24

@Darkbountyismissing naah I need to start saving more money. Can't be paying close to a fiver each for tea and spread.

It hasn't been that expensive for quite a while. The price has come down and there are always offers on butter, so I just buy whatever is on offer.

Haha. The complete opposite of what you say. Lurpak IS actually more traditional butter than most.

It uses a traditional production method as does Presidents. Most use a fast production method

RampantIvy · 28/09/2023 07:55

I don't understand the hatred for certain brands. I agree that some butters taste nicer than others. I particularly like President, but I don't find that there is sufficient difference in taste to justify the hatred.

Interesting, but that has no effect to what it tastes like to me and I wasn't basing my palette on the traditional process. Not sure how traditional adding rapeseed oil to butter like Lurpak do is though. I'll stick to the yellow salty stuff thanks 😊
