Can't find a substitute for my beloved of tips.

Lidl own brand tea and a bottle of food safe bergamot to put onto the dry tea bags.

Ultra cheap way to make earl grey tea.

Downgraded from Twinnings.

My DM used to buy loose leaf earl grey tea and add 2 tbsp to the T bag caddy.
I don't actually like earl grey, but your post reminded me. I imagine it gives a similar result.

Downgrade tea? Never!
It’s Yorkshire Tea or nowt.

Exactly this! I will never downgrade my tea.

PinkFootstool · 26/09/2023 22:03

I buy Yorkshire Tea in a bulk 600 bag for about £11-13 every few months. Cheapest way by far for me.

Pukka teas have basically doubled in price so I really can't justify buying them any more. Nearly a fiver for 20 teabags...?! Shame as they are nice!

Steakandquinoa · 26/09/2023 22:04

Our favourite is the Tesco red label but haven’t been able to get it with the silver wrap for months, just loose in a cardboard box which tastes dusty and stale (I assume the silver wrap is for freshness). I’ve got a box of Yorkshire to try when it runs out.

OddlyFramed · 26/09/2023 22:05

Things like tea isn’t going to make a difference much. If it was say a jar of pasta sauce that is only used once then buying a cheaper brand will make a difference. But tea which is only parts of pennies won’t. Although I appreciate saving a few pence a day is needed for some people. But something with a very small cost per use won’t make as much difference as baked beans brands

Charlingspont · 26/09/2023 22:06

I've downgraded from Tetley to supermarket own label. Used to it now. Also downgraded coffee to supermarket own. They were my two luxuries. All other groceries were already the cheap stuff. 😐

boobot1 · 26/09/2023 22:10

Ringtons to Yorkshire Gold. Its ok, but its not Ringtons.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 26/09/2023 22:10

Another vote for Aldi Gold. Co-op 99 is surprisingly good as well

heartbroken22 · 26/09/2023 22:12

@longwayoff which cheapest coffee would that be? Have you tried Asda just essentials? Or is that too basic?

smartiesneberhadtheanswer · 26/09/2023 22:12

Never down grading from Yorkshire gold, but if I did it would be anything BUT PG tips, so weak and tasteless!

MamaDollyorJesus · 26/09/2023 22:12

DD would move out if I downgraded her teabags! Twinnings English breakfast tea for her & lady grey for me but I don't drink tea that often & I only buy when it's on offer.

heartbroken22 · 26/09/2023 22:14

@TheMousePipes at nearly a fiver a box with a hubby using 2 teabags Everytime he makes tea and a mortgage with 6.29% interest . We need to save every penny we can 😂

I'm just drinking less. And my skin is looking so much better from having more water, so it's a win win.

yes but does your gorgeous skin make up for the emptiness in your soul from the lack of tea?

personally I buy in bulk whenever I see them on sale otherwise its ridiculous

ssd · 26/09/2023 22:16

Scottish blend here and Yorkshire tea too

I hardly drink, im not downgrading my cuppa Shock

heartbroken22 · 26/09/2023 22:17

@therealcookiemonster what sale? Last time of tips were on offer they were 10p less in Aldi 😂

😁. Not yet - I'm riding the high of looking less like an old hag!

Viviennemary · 26/09/2023 22:18

I Haven't but I don't drink vast quantities of tea. So so just wait till it's on offer. I have downgraded my coffee to nescafe.

longwayoff · 26/09/2023 22:18

@heartbroken22 I'm on Waitrose essential instant as I rely on their deliveries, I cant get to a supermarket in person. Although I mostly drink coffee, my tea is a pleasure and a treat so I wont be parted from nice tea.

Lysianthus · 26/09/2023 22:19

So here's my input. I hate tea. I have a canister with teabags. I suspect they're Sainsbury's own. At least two years old. Friends or visitors enjoy a tea. That's what they get. My best friends would tell me if their tea was shite. They love it. It's a teabag.

Presil · 26/09/2023 22:20

I have actually upgraded my coffee.

I got so fucked off with supermarkets charging over the odds for ground coffee that isn't particularly nice that I now have a coffee subscription account - three packs of fresh ground coffee of my choice for £15.77 a month, vacuum packed sealed and delivered to my door. I feel like fucking Frasier and it's cheaper than bloody co-op was at one point.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 26/09/2023 22:25

I would downgrade most other things before tea. I buy English Breakfast or Assam teabags from Booths or the blend from my local tea shop and also loose leaf tea from there. I don't drink coffee or soft drinks except water, so I'm damned if I'm downgrading my posh tea!

Terraria · 26/09/2023 22:29

Lidl 's earl grey used to be great but they changed the taste months ago 😔

Saschka · 26/09/2023 22:29

How can you downgrade from PG Tips? It’s already just a normal teabag. Each teabag costs about 2.4p, they aren’t expensive.

If you were drinking Fortnum and Mason Royal Blend, or Whittard loose leaf, yep there are cheaper options out there. I’m really not sure there are many cheaper options than PG Tips, or if they are cheaper, it is only 10p difference for a pack of 160 teabags so not worth it.

MontezumasPuma · 26/09/2023 22:30

I haven’t. Tea is my non-negotiable. I’ve broadly given up alcohol as I can do without it but I only drink Clipper Organic Decaf. Nothing else comes close. I have, however, downgraded from Clipper Organic Decaf coffee to own brand as I drink a lot of it and it’s now £7+ for a small (given the rate I drink it) jar.
