Question about XL bully ban

motheroreily · 26/09/2023 18:01

I'm very confused about this ban. I've tried reading the news for answers but still don't understand.

What does the ban mean? What will happen to the existing dogs will they be put to sleep? Or does it mean no new dogs can be bred?

Thank you

I don't think it is fully through into law but probably: neutering/spaying so no more puppies, putting a muzzle on when out of the house, having insurance and microchipping, which all dogs should be a anyway.

@Unexpecteddrivinginstructor thank you. I don't have a dog but that doesn't too bad to me.

Very good information from the PDSA which has been shared amongst various groups concerned with BSL, other organisations including law firms who specialise in Animal law have given the same information out, people have already started muzzle training

Yes. Helpful.

I have a large bulldog NOT bully and defo not XL American Bully, but we've been warned papers and DNA may not be enough.

Tbf, both of mine are muzzle trained anyway.

On a lead, microchipped, neutered/spayed, muzzled when out, kept secure at home, on a lead when out… third party insured.
Dogs trust are currently offering it for £25 a year I believe- at the moment. The bit I find confusing is the exemption certificate, says apply via defra on some sites but I can’t find anything.
I don’t have an XL bully by the way, I just think there should be more information around so people don’t just dump them at shelters.

I think the ban is absolutely bloody pointless as all the greeders will just breed something else, keep the dog in, cross breed it with something else, get the puppies and sell them and do god knows what to their poor old dogs or simply dump the poor buggers.

From what I’ve read it’s based on how the dog looks rather than DNA but I’m not sure. As it’s not a breed, I don’t think even the experts know where to begin. I’ve seen plenty of American Bulldogs, but they seem different to the XL bully…

theemmadilemma · 26/09/2023 20:48

I've already seen several Pitbulls called XL's.

They will go on measurements and 'characteristics' and just like the current bans get it massively wrong. And let's not start on the poor dogs that die while waiting for determination because of conditions.

Does anyone have an American Bulldog crossed staffy? I wondered how they fair under the XL bully ban, because the ban looks at size and features rather just the XL stated dogs. The ban specifics clearly match KC registered dogs but apparently they are exempt if the kennel club recognises them.

You might be better off starting new thread in the dog house board. More likely to get seen by people who could advise

saraclara · 13/01/2024 18:40

It's not a ban. The breed is not banned. Owners simply have to follow certain rules (muzzling in public places etc) in order to own them.

Bulew · 13/01/2024 18:56

Dog house board? I've not seen that, is it on Mumsnet?

Bulew · 13/01/2024 18:57

I wasn't clear enough in the post. I was asking if anyone had an American Bull Staffy and if they met the criteria. I'll try the suggested thread.
