Is anyone into Leonard Cohen?

I don’t know where I’ve been but he and his music have passed me by and I have only just discovered him through something I read.

I know he wrote much of his work in the 1960s but he played Glastonbury in 2008 and did a world tour in 2010.

He’s growing on me!

If you like him, what songs are your favourites?

How old are you?

So Long, Marianne is my favourite song of his.

listsandbudgets · 25/09/2023 21:33

Look up Take this Waltz

Iamnotaloggrip · 25/09/2023 21:33

My dad’s a fan and I grew up listening to Suzanne. I can probably still sing it word for word.

How could I have forgotten Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye?

Wonderful song.

lucya66 · 25/09/2023 21:42

You want it darker. Got some of his poetry /drawings books

Labbingtons · 25/09/2023 21:43

If I’m in the right mood, nothing beats Suzanne. He’s brilliant.

My daughter is 14 and loves him too. She’s also into Nick Drake, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Hendrix and Jeff Buckley, among others. Our house sounds like a pot filled field in July 1974.

neilyoungismyhero · 25/09/2023 21:44

Love everything he wrote and sang one of my legends. Glorious man.

meringue33 · 25/09/2023 21:45

Adore Leonard Cohen, luckily got to see him on his last tour.

DH was at the Glasto gig and cried.

Tower of Song, Hallelujah, Everybody Knows, Anthem, the Partisan, Closing Time, Who by Fire, Famous Blue Raincoat. Chelsea Hotel which is supposed to be about Janis Joplin. He has a couple songs on the Natural Born Killers soundtrack which are incredibly chilling.

TheMurderousGoose · 25/09/2023 21:45

the documentary about Leonard and Marianne and their time in Hydra is worth a watch.

Luckypoppy · 25/09/2023 21:45

Best concert I've ever been to and I didn't know who he was before!

Wishthiswasntthecase · 25/09/2023 21:47

Oh he was the soundtrack of my A levels so many more years ago than I care to remember.

User19537876 · 25/09/2023 21:47

Light as the Breeze
Joan of Arc,
Death of a Ladies man
Closing time

well, everything really

Redavocadoes · 25/09/2023 21:48

I was a massive fan. Saw him in Tel Aviv in 2009. Hallelujah of course, Bird on a Wire, Anthem, Famous Blue Raincoat
...

He was incredible, and his lyrics profound.

MagpieCastle · 25/09/2023 21:52

‘Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye’, ‘The Partisan’ and ‘Sisters of Mercy’ are some favourites but I do love most of his work and his poetry too.

If you do get into him you might also be interested in Polly Samson’s novel A Theatre For Dreamers about his time with Marianne (of So Long, Marianne fame) when they were living amongst artists and writers on Hydra, a Greek island. It’s really evocative.

EasternStandard · 25/09/2023 21:54

I was very much so in university days

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 25/09/2023 21:54

He was a very talented writer.

LorraineBainMcFly · 25/09/2023 21:56

If it be your will
Stranger song
Saw him in Edinburgh 2007?

Sundaygirl01 · 25/09/2023 21:56

I’ve already discovered So Long, Marianne and would love to watch that documentary.

I’m in my late 50s so I can’t work out why I’ve never come across him or heard his songs before. I’d heard his name but in the context of a singer who was too depressing and moody to listen to.
