Is your heating on yet?

I'm trying to hold off until 1st November.

House is currently 17-18 degrees (midlands) so it's comfortable, but each degree decrease from here will be really noticeable...planning jumpers, blankets, hot water bottles and thick socks.

Also, what temperature do you keep your house at?

My electric use is around £80, on average, every month, but gas in the winter months got as high as £400 a month so trying to keep costs down.

Once the house gets consistently below 16 I'd probably put the heating on.

Ineedwinenow · 24/09/2023 08:26

Ours automatically kicks in when it’s below 15 so it’s been coming on, on it’s our accord at 6am ( our timer is set in a morning from 6am to 9am) I did get up at around 4-5am yesterday morning and it’s definitely dropped 😭

Ilovegoldies · 24/09/2023 08:27

I put it on for an hour yesterday. I returned from a scorching Spain and my house was 16.5.

Not yet.

Kids all have snoodies, blankets thick socks.

We have a log burner that hasn’t been lit yet, but that’s likely to be the first thing to go on in about 3/4 weeks time.

Damonalbarnsbigtoe · 24/09/2023 08:30

Nope and not intending to for a while. House is currently 18 degrees. I’m hoping for much cheaper bills this Winter now costs have decreased!

Beezknees · 24/09/2023 08:30

Not yet. I'm in a top floor flat so it holds heat well, I've got all the windows open at the moment and was hot in bed last night. Normally I put it on around November time.

MarathonBarbie · 24/09/2023 08:31

Aiming to not turn it on until half term, but will see. Generally in the winter we set it to come on if it gets below 16 degrees.

CherryCokeFanatic · 24/09/2023 08:31

Same as you trying to hold off until November. It will only go on before then if outside temp is low single figures

My direct debit is going down to £119 which is a big improvement.

Same here. In SE England and it's very mild. Also, we had cavity wall insulation put in a few years ago and it made an astounding difference.

OriginalFloorboards · 24/09/2023 08:36

No. Throws on an evening if needed. No idea of inside temperature as the heating oil boiler is so old it doesn’t have a temperature dial on it (came with the house). However, husband will be chopping logs today as the log burner will go on first as we’ve a barn of free wood. Mortgage gone up £700 a month so it’s going to be much colder in our house with less heating on this year, more clothes, throws and hot water bottles.

Notyetthere · 24/09/2023 08:37

Ours came on last night. We have my mum here who is recovering from a major operation and she doesn't like getting cold. If she wasn't here we would probably wait a bit longer till November. Our bill is trending towards £280 per month so we really need to cut back on this or try and find a better tariff.

OriginalFloorboards · 24/09/2023 08:37

@Notyetthere hope she gets well soon.

hartof · 24/09/2023 08:39

No, our house hasn't gone below 22 yet (new build). I reckon we will get to the end of October before it's needed, even then it doesn't need to be on for long to get the house warm.

Rudolphthefrog · 24/09/2023 08:39

No heating for a while I wouldn’t think, house is still around 22c first thing in the morning without it, and it’ll warm up from there with the oven on etc. We operate by temperature not date, once house goes below 19c during the day the heating automatically goes on whether that’s September or November.

SuddenlyOld · 24/09/2023 08:41

We live in a new build which stays warm so not yet. I try to wait until November but we're moving to a much older house soon and I'm desperately hoping it won't be too much colder

pepsimax00 · 24/09/2023 08:42

Yes it's on in the mornings. Then when I come home from work I have it on a few hours.

Onthegrid · 24/09/2023 08:44

South East and windows still open during the day here and not yet put on socks or a jumper. I will be getting out the blankets and throws in anticipation of the temperatures dropping though.

Shodan · 24/09/2023 08:47

It came on yesterday morning for an hour, but not this morning. I need to check the thermostat...

I'm hoping the heating will be on significantly less this year as I've spent months building a new extension, with double glazing, in place of the old knackered conservatory which let in a lot of cold air.

PurplePositivity · 24/09/2023 08:47

North Yorkshire here and still not on.

Thermometer in hall states 19 degrees and we still have the bedroom window open on a night. House is about 30 years old and we had cavity wall insulation added a few years ago, it really helps retain the heat.

We went out last night and I actually commented how warm the house felt when we got in.

It's supposed to be warm next week so we may well be into October before it goes on.

Starlightstarbright2 · 24/09/2023 08:52

No . I am not even in credit for the summer yet .. so can’t afford it any time soon

tinytemper66 · 24/09/2023 08:53

It has kicked in twice in the night as the temperature dropped below 12 (I think)

ohtowinthelottery · 24/09/2023 08:54

Not on here yet. It's been a bit chilly the last couple of evenings but we haven't resorted to lighting the log burner either. Our heating runs on oil and I managed to fill the tank a couple of months ago when the price was much cheaper than last year. It will be going on as soon as it gets cold though. I won't be shivering! It does stay off in the daytime though even through winter - I've warned DS who now works from home. He can go into an office though so if he gets too chilly he'll have to go there!

Decafflatteplease · 24/09/2023 08:54

Not yet! We always try to make it until at least October, preferably October half term. House is around 17-18 at the moment, very old (1800s) house though so humidity always above 60 even with dehumidifiers.

Last winter we only had the heating on for a few hours in the evening and built up a large credit on our account as our bills were less than our DD mainly. Need to do that again this year as we need the money and they worn let us reduce the DD anymore so we'll just have to pay it, hopefully use less and then get rh refund in the spring

toastfiend · 24/09/2023 08:59

Ours has come on for for 30 mins or so the last couple of mornings. It's done by thermostat, which is set to 19.5 morning/evening and 18-19 throughout the day. We have oil heating, so have the benefit of being able to buy oil when it's cheap and monitor usage in real time, and our house is quite new so pretty energy efficient. We'll light the log burner once the temperature drops a bit more and often that's enough to not need the heating on at all in the evenings, even when it's really cold, so it all balances out.
