Is your heating on yet?

I'm trying to hold off until 1st November.

House is currently 17-18 degrees (midlands) so it's comfortable, but each degree decrease from here will be really noticeable...planning jumpers, blankets, hot water bottles and thick socks.

Also, what temperature do you keep your house at?

My electric use is around £80, on average, every month, but gas in the winter months got as high as £400 a month so trying to keep costs down.

Not yet but I debated it the other night when it definately felt chilly.

Will push it as far as possible, but the house is a pre 1900 victorian terrace with no insulation, so when it’s cold, it’s really bloody cold in here, especially in the north facing kitchen where my wfh desk is.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 24/09/2023 09:02

Nope. The timer kicks in at 15 so hoping to hold out till November. The flat holds heat well. I still have the windows open at night and if I feel cold I have a throw on the bed.

fussychica · 24/09/2023 09:03

No but I'm away until the end of next month. However, thanks to this thread I just checked my Nest and despite being set to off has decided to turn itself on for 2 hours in the last 2 days as the temp had dropped below 18 degrees. Have now changed the default to 14 so that should solve it. Thanks MN.

Not yet, though in previous years it would have been. Lounge currently 17.3, was a degree colder when I got up. Tbh how cold I feel has no correlation with the temperature - I was cold the other day at 20, whilst I've been ok this morning with just a blanket over me. I have Kuddle, onesie and thermals, plus woolly socks and fingerless gloves for when it gets colder. Am likely to be in the house more than usual this winter and refuse to put the heating on just for me.

Bonjovispjs · 24/09/2023 09:04

No, I'm still sleeping with the window open (London)

TheDuchessOfMN · 24/09/2023 09:04

I put ours on for the first time yesterday

rockingbird · 24/09/2023 09:07

Ours went on earlier in the week for an hour in the morning. Just to warm up the house a little.. I do wake at 5am so have started to feel a nip in the air!

Thestruggler · 24/09/2023 09:09

ours would have gone on yesterday, but the 'cosy' hub isn't working and we can't seem to manually override it. DH and I both have horrible colds at the moment and shivering, so just getting by with throws and an oil filled portable radiator. Not fun.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 24/09/2023 09:09

Yup, turned on Nest a week ago and we have the thermo set to 18 so if it drops below then it comes on.
We have two young kids and I hate the cold. I'm not working my arse off for money to sit in a cold house.

Coastalcreeksider · 24/09/2023 09:10

Mine hasn't kicked in yet but I have put it on a couple of times as we had some chilly nights.

I did put it on last night for an hour to air some clothes that had been drying on the airer as weather not good enough to dry outside.

I still haven't replaced my tumble dryer and I keep wondering if I should get another or just rely on the heating to dry/air stuff before putting away/wearing.

Decisions, decisions ...

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 24/09/2023 09:11

Just checked the history on nest and I actually thought the heating had been on a lot more than this.

Is your heating on yet?
Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 24/09/2023 09:12

@Coastalcreeksider oof that's a no brainer for me. Tumble drier 100%

Yirk · 24/09/2023 09:14

Mine kicked in this morning( up north!)

PseudoBadger · 24/09/2023 09:15

I put mine on for a couple of hours last week as with so much rain the house just felt a bit damp and horrid (we don't have any damp though). Seemed to help

mondaytosunday · 24/09/2023 09:15

17 out there today (this time yesterday it was 11) so no heat - I can usually make it to November. I have put on the gas fire a couple nights but then I don't need to be cold to have it on I love it!

Zipps · 24/09/2023 09:17

Yes an hour a night since Wednesday and log burner one night. We both grew up in a house without central heating and hate even a slight temperature dip. Jumpers and throws don't warm up the air. Priorities here are decent food and heating above everything else.

CornishTiger · 24/09/2023 09:18

The windows are still open in the day here upstairs so no heating isn’t on.

A couple of friends have though and I just thought stick some socks on. It ain’t cold!

ActDottie · 24/09/2023 09:20

Nope not yet, we don’t really put it on that often tbh. In the winter maybe three times a week for an hour.

We live in a 2018 build and the insulation is top notch so we just don’t really get cold.

Ivyy · 24/09/2023 09:24

Nope, SE England here and I'm loving how mild is still is, saying to dh last night we usually have heating on by now. Still have windows open and a fan on in the bedroom, it's south facing and our house is 1960's build with the huge rectangular windows, upvc, absolute heat magnets when the sun's out. Just over a week ago I was still complaining about it being too hot after the heatwave had lingered and the bedroom still being 25 or more overnight!

I agree, food and heating are my priorities over just about most other things. I hate being cold, I don't wear piles of jumpers and huddle under a mound of blankets, I just put the heating on/up and wear normal clothes if I'm uncomfortable.

Yettisrus29 · 24/09/2023 09:26

Mine came on yesterday I noticed, but I have a heat pump and when they replaced the old one I asked what would be best and was told to keep it on all the time (so not timed) I had it set to 16c all through summer but turned the thermostat up to 20c last week just to make sure it was still working.

After 3 years without heating this winter will be bliss and I'll deal with the bills somehow!

OldTinHat · 24/09/2023 09:28

Also holding on until November.

My dual fuel is £62 a month, I just bundle up I layers and never have the heating on for more than an hour a day when it's really cold.

RainCloudsInTheSky · 24/09/2023 09:32

Not yet. Also in the south east and it was so warm during the day yesterday I had to take off my cardigan in the sunshine. Must admit in the evening last night the house started to feel chilly so I guess it won’t be long but certainly won’t be before October. Will hold out as long as we can.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 24/09/2023 09:43

Not yet. I normally wait until the clocks change. It isn't remotely cold yet. I'm wearing a sweater and slippers in the evening but no thermals, and no thick socks yet and I won't put the heating on until thermals, thick socks and slippers aren't enough.

AnneElliott · 24/09/2023 09:44

No, will hold off until October half term.
