Dishwasher open or closed

When your dishwasher has finished its cycle, do you open the door or leave it closed?

Open slightly if we haven’t already gone to bed.

Eddyraisins · 23/09/2023 21:36

Closed isn't steam an essential part of the drying process?

mrsbyers · 23/09/2023 21:37

Ours opens when it’s finished but then I open it wider when I pass to get rid of any residual water

Ours opens automatically therefore I feel it’s best to open it. However if you have to manually open the dishwasher surely you just epty it there and then.

whatafuckinnightmare · 23/09/2023 21:38

Leave it closed so it dries everything.
When we're filling it through the day we leave it open slightly.

yogasaurus · 23/09/2023 21:39

Closed, the steam will warp the door if you open it when it’s hot

Soloparenthelp · 23/09/2023 21:40

Mine also opens automatically, it’s been doing it for four years and no damage to the other units. As it opens automatically I’d assume that it’s best to keep it open once finished

DiscoBeat · 23/09/2023 21:41

Closed while it's drying but we run it 2/3 times a day so when dirty it's constantly being opened for new arrivals!

LuckyAmy1986 · 23/09/2023 21:45

I seem to just open it automatically when its finished but I don't know why!! I didn't know if there was a right or wrong.

@LittleMrsPretty it's not dry when I open it as we don't tend to put the dry cycle on, so I leave it to cool before putting away

VanillaFlotilla · 23/09/2023 21:46

Ours opens (ajar) automatically when finished to let the steam out

PinkVelvett · 23/09/2023 21:46

Open it else things don’t dry properly. If I leave it closed then items will still be wet, hours late.

LuckyAmy1986 · 23/09/2023 21:46

I have never heard of a dishwasher automatically opening! Seems like I need an upgrade.

Sounds like it should be opened then if there are ones that atomically do it..

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 23/09/2023 21:52

Ours isn't ever properly dry at the end of the 'drying' cycle. Especially anything plastic.

Once the whole cycle, including the drying, has finished I open it, check nothing is actually holding water, if so I tip it out and put it back in the rack, then I pull the top rack forward a bit to hold it open by about 4 inches. I leave it for a few hours - either while I'm at work or overnight depending on when I ran the cycle - then before I do the next meal I empty it, by which time it's all properly dry.

fancyfrogs · 23/09/2023 21:54

I've always left it closed. I didn't know this was ever a question, or that some opened automatically, so naturally I am now questioning everything 😂

LuckyAmy1986 · 23/09/2023 21:54

@fancyfrogs I realise this is a very dull question for a Saturday evening, but I automatically opened the door after it finished and I just don't know why I do! So wanted to make sure it wasn't an issue or going to cause any damage

OP posts:
CheersToMe · 23/09/2023 22:23

@GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut do you use rinse aid? I do even with all in one tabs, as I find it helps the plastics to dry.

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/09/2023 23:19

Closed. Ours makes a beeping noise every few seconds if you leave it open.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 23/09/2023 23:21

@cheerstome no I don't, that's interesting.

It's mostly things like kids beakers and water bottles that are the culprits. I've just assumed they don't let the air circulate very well inside and don't get really hot like crockery and glasses.

jimmymcg · 23/09/2023 23:47

Mine opens automatically- it says it is to assist the drying in an efficient way. Seems to work. The lights on the cycle stay on for about 45 mins after the door opens.

Eddyraisins · 24/09/2023 07:42

2 different possibilities.

It seems it's better to leave it open when not in use but worse if you let all if the hot steam out as thats is drying you dishes.

The ones that automatically open the steam must have cooled.

I doubt this is true, otherwise why would some models open automatically?

I have a Miele and it opens after the load is finished. It's on a special catch so you have to close it again before you can open it fully.

Not that I have ever done it, but I have seen a few videos of opening the door once it's done, but still hot and putting a tea towel over the inside of the door, then close it again.

Netcam · 24/09/2023 07:57

Our previous Miele opened automatically but it stopped working recently. We have replaced it with a new Miele, their cheapest model. This new one doesn't open automatically. It seems fine, things are slightly wetter inside but it's not a big problem.

Glarptip · 24/09/2023 08:03

Once it's past washing, I pull the top tray out a bit and slam it back in with the door, to shake the sitting water off the bottom of the teacups.

Then I shut the door.
