FFS nearly 50 and need MAP

So my perimenopausal bloody brain forgot to take the pill two days is a row, I had sex with my husband of 20 years and tomorrow morning I am off to get the morning after pill as I have no idea where I might be in my cycle and really, really don’t want to get pregnant at 50! FFS!
I have a reminder on my phone to take the pill, but evidently it is really easy to ignore.
The first and last time I needed the MAP was at uni! I am so pissed off at myself and also at the fact that I had 3 Mirena coils which worked fine and now they can’t get another one in - 4 attempts with different doctors and I have now given up.
Please tell me I am not alone!

I wouldn’t bother? Surely it’s extremely unlikely.

viviscool · 23/09/2023 20:40

don't bother with your doctor for
the mirena. Locate your nearest family planning clinic and get them to do it: they're doing them all the time so always get it right
and won't hurt. Good Luck

Really?
I’m well over 50 and my cycle was still regular until about age 54, my HRT consultant said that if I didn’t get sterilised 20 yrs ago, then it would be quite possible for me to have fallen pregnant at any time.
The OP is doing the sensible thing!

Go to a Boots pharmacy, they sell it there over the counter

PastTheGin · 23/09/2023 20:44

I know it’s extremely unlikely, but I definitely do not want to run the risk, I have proven to be very fertile in the past and as my cycle is all over the place I can’t risk it. I could not have an abortion and I am too old for sleepless nights.

@viviscool my first 3 Mirenas went in just fine, but they just can’t get another one in! Last time I saw a specialist and there was just no way. So annoying!

You aren’t alone!

A third of pregnancies of women in their 40s end in termination, apparently.

x2boys · 23/09/2023 20:57

Oh god imagine?
Im.50 in two.months getting pregnant at this age would be awful.

Goldencup · 23/09/2023 21:02

I wouldn't bother chance of pregnancy is vanishingly low.

Slipslidinginthefray · 23/09/2023 21:08

I had to do this not so long ago OP in almost identical circumstances

Went to the chemist for it and although they were very professional and all I still felt utterly mortified like some embarrassing and embarrassed old lady 🙄.

It also really missed my cycle up which was also annoying as I was going on holiday two months later and spent the whole week wondering if I was going to come on my period.

I personally wouldn’t take the risk.

PastTheGin · 24/09/2023 19:18

The pharmacist, who could have been my son, was definitely more embarrassed than I was! 🤣

I wouldn't bother either. I haven't used contraception since I turned 45. As the PP said the chances of getting pregnant are vanishingly low.

PastTheGin · 24/09/2023 19:39

Even if the odds are low, women can and do get pregnant at 50. I am 100% sure I don’t want another child, especially with the higher risks associated with geriatric pregnancies, so I am not taking any chances!

My colleagues sister just had a baby at 51 as a total surprise. It really does happen

Gemstar3 · 24/09/2023 20:02

My first thought was “good for you” that you had some action OP! The temporary embarrassment is absolutely worth it for making sure you don’t have an unwanted pregnancy. If it makes you feel better, I used to work in a pharmacy and there would be people of all ages every single shift asking for it, you’re absolutely not alone!

Decafflatteplease · 24/09/2023 20:10

Little bit younger than you but a friend of mine had her last baby at 46ish. Didn't find out for a while as thought periods had stopped due to menopause, turned out it was a baby!
