Please help - is this a uti? And do I need to get treatment sooner than in four weeks? Sorry for TMI

TMI Last three days when I wiped after peeing there is blood, also some pain that feels like it's going into my abdomen, I think it could be urethra, it is a sharp pain, like it's following a line, where I think my urethra is.

It has just happened again now and woke me up.

I filled in a form online for the doctor two days ago, it's the only way to contact the surgery, I got a text back saying they would review me in four weeks and ring me then - but that's not right is it? This is a uti isn't it and I need to be seen. Isn't that right?

Can you go to your local pharmacy and ask the pharmacist for advice?

ChaChaRealSmooth · 22/09/2023 02:38

A pharmacist can prescribe antibiotics if it’s a UTI. They can give you a 3 day course as long as you haven’t had a UTI recently and have no complicating factors e.g Kidney issues.

Opatulo · 22/09/2023 02:40

Well I guess, but I think it's better to see a doctor because a doctor can prescribe. It's Friday tomorrow and they don't work weekends. If it is a uti as I understand it I need antibiotics.

Sorry X post, ok I will try pharmacist.

It's very unsatisfactory, being told to wait four weeks for a phone call when peeing blood.

Agreed, if you have no luck with the pharmacy and can’t get into your GP, try a walk in service (if you have one near you) or use 111 and get an out of hours appointment

Summerslimtime · 22/09/2023 02:44

At my surgery they would do a prescription same day. Is it superdrug you can order abx online?

Opatulo · 22/09/2023 02:47

Thank you everyone. Is this a uti though? I don't even know. From Google it sounds like it.

They should be able to test your urine, if you take a sample in. I would ask them 1 st.

Opatulo · 22/09/2023 02:55

Thanks, hopefully they can help, god it is all so grim, not helped by computer says four weeks ffs.

I'd just get the drugs.

Peacendkindness · 22/09/2023 03:11

Go get antibiotics

HerAvatar · 22/09/2023 05:05

Definitely try the pharmacist and there's also 111 if it gets really bad out of hours, it's sometimes actually easier to get seen by the out of hours service than get a GP appointment these days, awful as that is. Not sure it will be enough in your case (as there's blood when you wipe which probably does mean you need antibiotics) but there's a really good supplement for UTI called D-mannose which might give you some relief in the meantime, Holland & Barrett do it or you can google for online suppliers.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 22/09/2023 07:29

I agree that speaking to someone is your best option but FYI you can buy a UTI test at Superdrug if you need to.

Butteredtoast55 · 22/09/2023 07:44

I think a face to face pharmacist is in a better position to tell you if it's a UTI than people on the internet. Do take a urine sample for them to check. It sounds like you need antibiotics or at least an over the counter treatment. Drink loads of water or something alkaline like barley water. By loads I mean 2-3 litres a day.
Sorry for potential TMI but (at home) it can help to keep a small bottle by the loo of warm water to rinse yourself off after weeing and pat yourself dry with a towel as this can just ease any discomfort and keep you from getting sore if you're weeing a lot.
Wear something cotton and loose, keep a hot water bottle to have on your lap if it's painful. Really hope you feel better soon, UTIs are horrible.

RichTeee · 22/09/2023 09:55

I would write to your surgery and complain.
That is horrendous
Even my absolutely shite GP has a drop in box for urine samples and will test for UTI and prescribe antibiotics as needed.

An untreated UTI can cause kidney damage and even progress to sepsis. Please go to the pharmacy today and get sorted.

If you are at the peeing blood stage i would guess a 3 day course is not going to be enough but would contact the surgery again on Monday.
Is there anyway to physically go there today with a sample and insist it is tested....it seems very unwise and unusual that they wouldn't have a nurse to do this. It's better to check clean (as in urine that hasn't had any antibiotic treatment) to ensure you are on the correct antibiotic. For this a sample needs to be sent to a lab to be cultured.

I would go to the surgery and demand this is done.

This is coming from the parent of a kidney patient and a person who has multiple bladder infections each year. It's my high horse topic. Apologies

Hope you do feel better soon.

And I agree with the drinking more and weeing with warm water or even in a bath (shower after) if it's very painful.
