How do you make the perfect porridge

I never normally eat porridge but I can't stop thinking about it tonight so that's tomorrow's breakfast sorted but I don't remember how to make it. There's so many different ways on Google so mumsnet, what's your foolproof way to make Porridge?

I cup oats to 2 of water!

PicturesOfDogs · 20/09/2023 22:16

2:1 ratio water to porridge. I usually do a mug of porridge, two of water.

Put it on a really low heat, add a pinch of salt, and stir it.

BigFatLiar · 20/09/2023 22:17

Leave it to OH to make. I can't get it right (according to the children).

Are you me? My DD's won't eat it if I make it. Has to be Dad.

On the hob, never the microwave

And milk, not water…

Ostryga · 20/09/2023 22:18

Porridge made with water is so depressing!

1 cup porridge, 2 cups whole milk, stir constantly on a low heat until it’s thick and creamy. Pinch of salt at the end. Serve with masses of cream and brown sugar.

7Worfs · 20/09/2023 22:18

Oats with lots of whole milk, on hob or in microwave; stir occasionally.
Add chopped banana and raisins at the end.

Multipleexclamationmarks · 20/09/2023 22:18

1 cup of oats in pan. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over, leave for 30 seconds (ish) oats will start to swell. Turn on heat and gradually add around 1 cup of warmed milk. Leave on very low heat for a few minutes before serving. I like maple syrup in mine.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 20/09/2023 22:18

40g of porridge per person 250ml of milk. Semi skimmed for me but full fat for the kids. Simmer on a low heat and it's rich and creamy.

Delicious, my favourite breakfast and cheap too

FoFanta · 20/09/2023 22:21

Pinhead oatmeal, half a cup of oats, 2 cups milk, 2 cups water, in the rice cooker, set delay timer. Warm and creamy in the morning. The rice cooker is really easy to clean too. My current, completely ridiculous topping is tinned pears, crystallised ginger, dark chocolate chips and Greek yoghurt. Absolute Autumnal breakfast bliss!

That's why I'm in the predicament. Hes working away. I barely ever eat it but realised when I do, he makes it!

Make with milk, not water. A good covering of milk and slowly heat and stir - don't rush it! Add more milk if needed. Throw in fruit or raisins/nuts and honey. Yum, my favourite breakfast 😊

Waxdrip · 20/09/2023 22:23

3-4 heaped tablespoons of oats in a bowl and enough milk to cover them. Handful of frozen berries and maybe a bit of brown sugar. Microwave a couple of minutes on medium, stir halfway through. Seeds on top. Delicious.

AsanteSana · 20/09/2023 22:23

1 cup oats, 2 cups full fat milk, few drops lemon juice, large pinch of ground ginger and 2 bay leaves. Heat over a low heat, stirring constantly until creamy and irresistible!

Charlattanus23 · 20/09/2023 22:23

Flahavans. Nothing else comes close. Even the microwaveable ones are fab.

2 parts water to 1 part oats.

(Scottish relatives, cover your ears: I personally like it with cream and sugar or syrup though growing up Scottish relatives swore by a pinch or two of salt.)

I'm surprised the amount of people suggesting water. I thought you needed milk with it, wasn't sure if you used both!

Thanks all 😊 you've given me even more recipes than Google ha

No no no! The best formula is 1 cup oats, 1 cup milk and 1 cup water!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 20/09/2023 22:26

I use an espresso cup.

1 cup oats
1 cup milk
1 cup water
30 second increments in the microwave
Then 10 seconds when it's nearly done

Nam3chang384 · 20/09/2023 22:27

oats snd whole milk, do it on the hob and just keep adding milk if it becomes too thick. Porridge and water is what I imagine they serve in prison, don’t do it.

nocoolnamesleft · 20/09/2023 22:27

1 cup porridge oats, 2 cups hazelnut milk. Stir slowly as it heats. Add in a small dash of maple syrup, a sprinkling of cinnamon, and some raisins and chopped dried apple. Gorgeous.

Kiitos · 20/09/2023 22:28

Oh and serve with either golden syrup, or dark brown soft sugar

AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside · 20/09/2023 22:29

Porridge made with water is gruel.

Anyway, the perfect way to make porridge is with a quarter of a teaspoon of honey 😂

My seriousanswer is, I'd make it with full fat milk, add a banana and a drizzle of honey.

Jitterybugs · 20/09/2023 22:29

1 cup porridge oats, 1 cup water, 1 cup milk.

Microwave full power 3 mins.

Stir after 2 mins and continue for final minute.

Use a bigger bowl than you think you need to allow for it increasing in size. I use a wide pasta bowl. Then dish it from there into the kids bowls and add milk and honey and maybe some fruit of your choice. My favourite is sliced banana.

brooksghost · 20/09/2023 22:29

50g of oats
200ml milk

Microwave 2.5mins
Stir
Microwave 1.5mins

Stir. Add a splash of milk or (my new fav) coconut milk. Helps it cool.

Some days, a sprinkle of sugar.
DH adds salt.
