I knew they were covering up for something. Absolutely disgraceful.

DisforDarkChocolate · 20/09/2023 13:39

It's appalling and got far too little publicity.

Do you know you can swear in the online video part of police recruitment and still get through to the next stage. Only persistent swearing gets a fail. (No idea if this applies to the Met).

madamreign · 20/09/2023 13:40

Tonnes of shit more important than Brand.

Doesn't stop the wall to wall coverage.

irisretic · 20/09/2023 13:41

It hasn’t been covered up though, it has been there in the news. I think those who believe the RB story was released as some sort of conspiracy cover up need a reality check.

Riiiiight, it's been the top / 2nd story on the BBC News for two days. Headlines across the media.

But it's a big coverup? Hardly.

The BBC weren't part of the Brand investigation by The Times. That's just facts, not rhetoric.

You could also argue about numerous other stories in the press that this government would prefer to suppress this week are also part of a cover up, but we're all seeing the stories, no?

coxesorangepippin · 20/09/2023 13:42

Finally

Bloody men

fiddlesticksandotherwords · 20/09/2023 13:45

Yes. Which is more important? One famous person with allegations of being a sex offender or a thousand police officers suspended from duty due to allegations of misconduct, violence or corruption?

Of course these stories are still featured. The key thing is that the impact of this news is completely diffused due to the RB story. Around 400 police officers are being investigated/convicted for sexual and domestic abuse. RB is just one man who has not even been investigated yet.

News outlets choose when to release stories. They could have waited a week, a few days ect. They do this sort of thing all the time.

TheSpruce · 20/09/2023 13:51

I mean isn't it the fault of the idiot public that they're spending so much time on the Russell Brand story? I've looked at a couple of highlight articles and moved on. Yet there are endless threads about him since the weekend.

Let it go and focus on important stories like this one. No one is stopping you.

JaninaDuszejko · 20/09/2023 13:55

Agree that the MET suspensions and the report on abuse by surgeons is more important.

I still don't understand why Russell Brand is such a big story when there's already been multiple disclosures that the entertainment industry is full of abusive and violent men going back decades. The only good thing about these celebrity stories is that it's hopefully helping to move the Overton window on attitudes on what is acceptable behaviour at work WRT VAWG.

TooBigForMyBoots · 20/09/2023 13:55

If we had to wait on a quiet week for government /police scandal, we'd be waiting years for the Brand story to come out.

I agree.

We had the same in Ireland recently over a presenters's pay - it was €175,000 more than officially stated.
Wall to wall coverage.
Public questioning of individuals concerned by our politicians in our parliament 🙄
Meanwhile our new Children's Hospital being built has had a huge overrun in costs. Billions.
It was also minimally reported that many people had been inadvertently injured while in the care of our health service.
We have a housing crisis.
We have unsafe cities and towns and yet our media focused on the €175,000

Why do journalists do this ?

PoliticallyIncorrectHitchling · 20/09/2023 14:34

Absolutely!! They obv were covering this.

MinnieMouse0 · 20/09/2023 14:41

I don’t think the RB story was a cover up at all. It wasn’t a new news story covered by the media - it was investigative journalism by Channel 4 and the Times. It wouldn’t have mattered when they chose to publish it, the RB story would always have dominated headlines and clashed with other news stories.
