Thread 10 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 9).

Although the nights are gradually drawing in, the new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey inside. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Stephen King is my literary pleasure.

As a Mainer I can only agree with your tastes :-)

MavisMcMinty · 01/11/2023 18:37

this may have been coincidence as he was later complaining of a sore left arm until I reminded him that he'd been jabbed in the right arm.

Ha ha ha!

duc748 · 01/11/2023 18:37

I had both at the same time about a week ago. Usual slight ache, but no ill-effects.

Yes, I had both - to my surprise - and survived with minimal arm soreness.

Gonners · 01/11/2023 19:02

Something went haywire this year as neither of us was "invited" for either jab by the GP's surgery which, given Mr G's age, was very odd. I thwarted their plan to kill us by walking into Boots for the flu jab and booking the Covid online. It was odd, as we're really not "nuisance" patients. Or are we?

MouseMinge · 01/11/2023 23:45

I had both on the same day and spent the evening with two slightly dead arms. More or less back to normal by the following evening and no real ill effects. The flu jab was extra stingy this year thobut.

Thanks for the pics, SinnerBoy, it must be lovely seeing all those birds on the ship.

It is and it isn't; we often spend a month at sea and they die off, despite efforts to feed and water them.

Anyway, an update: the last two were redwings, which come to Britain for the winter, from Scandinavia.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 02/11/2023 06:55

B
Gonners the same thing happened to our neighbours - both in their 80s, both with health conditions but she had to fight to get their 2 vaccinations.

When I had mine I had no discomfort at all, not even a sore arm. I hope The Man is feeling better.

Oh. I hadn't thought of that. Poor birds!

MouseMinge · 02/11/2023 09:19

Ciaran arrived. I thought things weren't too bad. Woke to see my terrace looking like a war zone and the heavy wooden three foot high and about two feet wide that are on a wide path I can see from the window all against a fence on the same side of the path. They've moved about three foot from their usual position. I'm guessing the actual seafront is a bit wild and on the mental side. It's still blowing a hoolie but it's not as ferocious as it was in the wee small hours.

Oh, that's really sad! Poor little birds.

I always try to feed them, we always have peanuts, which I wash, to get rid of the salt. Finches seem to do OK with that, but others don't. We once had a pigeon, which got nuts and oats and quickly became hand tame.

artant · 02/11/2023 16:55

I had my Covid and flu jabs a couple of weeks apart. My arm was hot a few days after the Covid one and the flu jab hurt at the time (it’s a much bigger needle) but was fine after. I don’t think I got invited for either by my GP practice but I’m eligible as I get carers allowance rather than because of my age which may account for that.

I think reactions vary wildly though.

Gonners · 02/11/2023 19:01

Because I had to go all proactive on them and organise everything without an invite (harrumph!) we went to a walk-in clinic at the local Boots for flu and booked at another pharmacy about 10 minutes away for Covid. Both pharmacists were really, really competent and I didn't feel the needles go in. The local Boots guy (HK Chinese, I think) also gave MrG a short lecture on how he should appreciate me, because I take very good care of him.

I once had a flu jab at the surgery delivered by a nurse I'd never seen before (or since, for that matter) who either slipped or was in training for a darts match. We were both standing up and she stabbed so hard that I staggered sideways. She didn't even seem to find it surprising. Now that was a bruise!

artant · 02/11/2023 22:46

My flu jab was also at Boots. The jabber seemed very competent but the needle is a lot bigger than the Covid jab needle and it hurt whereas I didn’t feel the Covid one. I booked the Covid one on the national booking system; it was at a local hub (used to be a walk-in place but now it’s extra capacity for local GPs).

I took my granddaughter to see Hamilton this evening and was blown away by it. I'm not a fan of hip hop or rap generally speaking, but this was terrific and the lyrics were so clever and witty. Highly recommended.

duc748 · 03/11/2023 00:21

Where was that, Brit? I'd love to see it.

SinnerBoy · 03/11/2023 07:37

I'm on that one!

MouseMinge · 03/11/2023 09:45

I applaud his FU attitude. The cafe do not own the road. In fact they should only be able to put their sign in the road for an hour before moving it and traffic wardens should be informed 😉

MouseMinge · 03/11/2023 09:46

Off to bloody Guilford this morning for a meeting about what's going on with my pathetic oesophagus and what happens next. Thankfully no procedures today so I won't be stuck there this weekend!

Victoria Palace Theatre duc. Tickets were eye watering prices but I managed to get two mid-price ones on row E of the stalls, because you couldn't quite see all of the left hand side of the stage, but honestly we missed nothing. I'm still thinking about it this morning. I'm very familiar with the history around the period (American studies was part of my degree) but if you aren't it would probably be worth reading the synopsis on Wikipedia.

Good luck Mouse!

Sounds great, @Britinme ! But not cheap, as you say. I am far from knowledgeable about the period and characters, but I'm sure it'd be easy to do a bit of boning up. And I do like (some) hip-hop too. I'll have to get my London-dwelling son on the case.

CyanCrystalViolet · 03/11/2023 12:46

Good luck, Mouse!

A combination of Storm Ciaran and Something Gone Wrong has caused a nightmare with my car. When I got in the other day, I noticed some wetness on the back seat. When I got home I removed the back seats and the area was sodden with water, actual little pools of it. I've checked all around and can't find a source of the leak. The only thing that could potentially have caused it is the seal around my boot was filthy and there was quite a bit of leaf debris. I've cleaned it all off now and praying that has fixed the issue of the leak itself.

Unfortunately no garage could fit me in until late next week (one said not until next year!), there's no shelter to put it under so it's just sitting out there possibly accumulating more water (going to assess later today). It already needs some work doing to it and I'm very low on funds so I've been quite upset. I was seriously considering driving it to a high risk area yesterday in the hope it would get swept out to sea.
