Thread 10 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 9).

Although the nights are gradually drawing in, the new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey inside. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

I bet some Americans shoot bugs. I've seen Italians shoot butterflies.

Glad you're safely out of the way, Brit. It's ridiculous that someone with those known recent issues was able to buy that gun - or didn't have it removed when released from hospital.

Theoretically we have a “yellow flag” law that is supposed to cover that, but despite the fact the guy spent two weeks in a psychiatric hospital this summer, claimed to be hearing voices and threatened to shoot up the military base where he worked, he managed to get hold of an assault weapon anyway. And now 18 people who were just unfortunate enough to be in a bowling alley and a restaurant at the wrong time are dead, and another 13 seriously wounded. First it will be “too soon” to do anything about it, thoughts and prayers will be offered, and then it will be forgotten about.

That post made me look to what I'd call ' the Old, old Place', (FU), which I think few people here were on (@artant ? Anyone?). But I can't seem to access it now. It kinda looked like it was just limping on anyway.

Just checked and it is up. The new 'old' place is a .co.uk domain, Johnny kept the .com

Doh! Just realised you meant FU. That's also kinda still up, but the hosting is a problem and the https certificate/tls version is causing some browsers to fail to connect

artant · 27/10/2023 15:00

That sent me to old FU and it’s fine for me @duc748

I hardly ever post there these days as I usually find the conversation’s moved on long before I read stuff. I should make more effort to visit regularly.

Today I've painted my weird Barbie dress ready to wear tomorrow night. I need to do some cutting up of the wig, scribble on my face and I'm good to go! I'm really looking forward to it.

duc748 · 27/10/2023 23:35

@artant

I only occasionally pop in, but the last time I did, I got the sense that the regular posters are very much TWAW.

Tricyrtis2022 · 28/10/2023 09:47

@MouseMinge do you mean actual scribble? That sounds hilarious.

MouseMinge · 28/10/2023 12:09

Yep, but with face crayons not pen because I want it to wash out. If you haven't seen the film Google weird Barbie and you'll see the look.

Tricyrtis2022 · 28/10/2023 12:59

That looks great! Curious to hear what the reaction is.

Weird Barbie sounds like a character from The Land of Neverendings by Kate Saunders where there's a club for dolls that have been scribbled on. There are a number of Barbies in the club, most of them very cross.

MavisMcMinty · 28/10/2023 13:24

Oh Mouse, having googled Weird Barbie, that sounds right up your street! You’ll look so great. Is she a Barbie film invention?

artant · 28/10/2023 13:47

Weird Barbie looks great.

I really meant to get to the cinema to watch both Barbie and Oppenheimer. Failed on both counts.

MavisMcMinty · 28/10/2023 16:16

I’m waiting till they’re on Sky Cinema, my sciatica rules out most films at the cinema.

MouseMinge · 28/10/2023 16:40

She is, Mavis.

I saw both, artant Oppenheimer on a Monday and Barbie the next day. I liked Barbie and probably would have come close to loving it if it wasn't for seeing Oppenheimer first. That film blew me away.

I've cut my 80s multi coloured wig so that it looks even more of a hot mess, taken up my friend's black dress and I'm just waiting for her to turn up to do a - hopefully not too awful - sugar skull on her face. I bloody love dress up. Next month we are going to a party where we have to dress up as a character from a children's book. There will be mixed ages going so I'm expecting a lot of Harry Potter costumes. I'm probably going to end up as some Victorian character or other.

MouseMinge · 28/10/2023 16:40

Or maybe Eloise!

Kucinghitam · 29/10/2023 07:19

I forgot the clocks were going back this weekend and was confused when I woke up at my "normal" time but my phone said it was 5am. I do not like it when the clocks go back Sad Me personally I much prefer to have dark mornings rather than dark evenings.

DD2 gave us a scare yesterday. We'd gone to the local library to choose some books. DH and DD were at a table together reading, when suddenly DD said "I feel strange." DH said something like "Oh, should we leave?" but when DD stood up, she just crumpled to the floor. She regained consciousness almost immediately, DH was completely freaked out and carried her over to me, where I was browsing a shelf. Poor thing was pale as a greenish ghost and much in need of hugs. We must have made a strange picture, all huddled on the floor in an aisle. (DD1 wandered past, did the teenage shrug thing, and went back to her book like meh, so we sent her to the cafe to buy a hot drink for DD2).

Eventually DD2 recovered enough for a very slow walk home. Turns out she was on her period, which may have had something to do with it. Weirdly, I recall (at the same age) fainting whilst on my period, when I was out somewhere with my dad (and him freaking out). By the time we got home, DD was completely fine and chatting away about how strange the episode had been.

artant · 29/10/2023 11:02

Oof, that sounds scary @Kucinghitam (although clearly DD1 thought otherwise).

I like the clocks going forward and back but I think we should be on proper European time (so our existing summertime in the winter and double summertime in the summer). Dark mornings confirm that getting up early is stupid and lighter evenings make everyone happier.

artant · 29/10/2023 11:10

When I was little there were a few years when the clocks didn’t go back which was a good start but it would have been even better if we’d had summertime as well.

CyanCrystalViolet · 29/10/2023 11:15

@Kucinghitam poor DD2. I’m glad she made a swift recovery. Periods are dreadful things.

The clock change caught me off guard. I somehow hadn’t heard anything about it, even though I think it’s always the last Sunday in October? It just hadn’t clocked (!) in my head. I struggled to get to sleep last night and was horrified when I saw the time on my alarm clock said 10am, and thought I must’ve dreamt it when I looked at my phone and saw 9am (this does sometimes happen).

MmePoppySeedDefage · 29/10/2023 21:59

About 15 years ago I went to IKEA the day the clocks went back without realising that they had changed so arrived an hour early and had to stay in the car until it opened. I then did exactly the same thing the following year.
I generally go to IKEA about once every two years on average, so what came over me I do not know.
Glad your daughter is OK Kuc.

Britinme · 29/10/2023 22:01

How scary Kuc - I glad DD is ok now.

artant · 29/10/2023 22:29

“About 15 years ago I went to IKEA the day the clocks went back without realising that they had changed so arrived an hour early and had to stay in the car until it opened.”

At least you were only an hour out. One year my former flatmate started the day unreasonably early by knowing that the clocks were changing but being confused about which way. I wasn’t amused at being woken at stupid o’clock on a Sunday morning.

MavisMcMinty · 29/10/2023 23:20

I’m at my Dad’s and didn’t arrive until after midnight (old time). Then he went to bed and I didn’t know if he’d turned all his clocks back, so I looked at my ipad and it agreed with Dad’s clocks that it was 01.08, but I didn’t know if maybe it had already hit 02.00 and gone back to 01.00, so thought I’d better go to bed too, as we had a 12.00 (new time) table booked for lunch… I absolutely loathe the clock change twice a year, wish we’d stop doing it and when I am World King I shall put a stop to it.

It’s not quite as bad now that I don’t have to go to work, but this is still the worst week of the year for me. I’m so irritated by people who say “Oh I love it when the clocks go back and we get that extra hour in bed!” and I think (or say) “Oh FFS, you can always have an extra hour in bed on a Sunday morning without plunging the whole fucking country into winter”. Bah!

And hasn’t the EU decided to stop all the clock changing nonsense, just as we Brexited?

duc748 · 29/10/2023 23:50

I've been down to Bristol this weekend to see my BFF, who is very dear to me. She wrote and illustrated some wonderful stories for her grandchildren, I can barely imagine how wonderful they would be to a seven year old. One for a granddaughter about a princess, and one for a grandson about a boy finding a spotted egg. My crap photos go nowhere near doing them justice.

MouseMinge · 29/10/2023 23:52

I was very confused about times today because my fitness watch needed to be changed manually but not my phone, laptop, etc. I was tired anyway so nothing made any sense to me.

The party was fun last night. My costume was bloody brilliant even though I looked like a heifer in it. We didn't stay long because Snoop wanted to get home to Seamus and I was tired. We played a game called Autopsy and the host made the most delicious pumpkin soup with rosemary and oodles of garlic. It's unusual to get soup at a party so it was a real treat for old Mrs "stay off the solids" me.

MouseMinge · 29/10/2023 23:54

@Kucinghitam I'm glad you dd is okay. I used to faint a lot when I was having my periods as a teenager. Luckily because it happened a lot I recognised when one was about to happen so could get myself in a position where I didn't go plunging to the floor banging my head on a table as I did so, that was nice.

duc748 · 29/10/2023 23:55

I have a few more, but it's late now. But I think they are lovely.
