A Plague of Crane Flies

Seriously, what’s going on this year? I’ve never come across so many.

Do you know them as daddy long legs? Are they actually the same thing?

They're good for the birds to eat, particularly the migratory ones who will be returning to their homes soon.

TheBirdintheCave · 19/09/2023 12:47

We had a wet summer so lots of their larvae survived (unfortunately, as I am utterly terrified of the things).

Bananas1350 · 19/09/2023 12:47

I get rid of them. As they can become leather jackets and ruin ur lawn. I am a gardener and fear that the most.

VeridicalVagabond · 19/09/2023 12:49

I haaaaate them so much and there have definitely been more of them this year than usual.

My cats are usually quite good at getting them, thankfully.

JaneJeffer · 19/09/2023 12:52

I keep finding their body parts after the spiders have dined on them. Spiders are not fans of legs and wings it seems. No KFDLL for them.

NowNumber5 · 19/09/2023 12:53

Oh no @TheBirdintheCave you would not have liked to have been in our sun room just now, I must’ve threw out about 10, they were all over the windows/sills and even a couple on the plants in there.
Luckily I’m not bothered by them.
Good to know they have natural prey @parameciumparty .

Thanks @Bananas1350 , I’ll bear that in mind.

Has anyone else noticed the sheer numbers of them this year or just me?
Mind you, it’s only been particularly bad today so who knows!

Yes! I had absolutely loads of them a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully they seem to have died out now ( or my cat has managed to eat them all 🤢)

TheBirdintheCave · 19/09/2023 12:55

@NowNumber5 😧Our windows are firmly shut in September 😂 My husband knows to check all the rooms for them as well before we go to bed. In return I shepherd out the larger spiders that make him feel 'uncomfortable' 😅

NowNumber5 · 19/09/2023 13:04

@JaneJeffer
Yes! I noticed that too. Mummified cobwebby discarded body parts were in the high corners (says a lot about my house keeping 🙈)

What does KFDLL mean?

@TheBirdintheCave Haha luckily I don’t mind spiders either - especially if they think crane flies are fine dining!

@Philomenacunk1 Your cat is very welcome here 😂

Kentucky Fried Daddy Long Legs @NowNumber5

I haven't seen any for years. When I was a kid at school we had a hall that was all glass on one side. At this time of year there would be literally undress on the glass every day. We used to play with them!
