If it does become a pay to use service, as is being suggested on the news today?

I think this would be the final nail in the coffin and the only thing that might save it is the lack of one obvious alternative.

So do you use it now and would you continue id you have to pay?

For me:
Yes
No

I opened a Mastodon account a while ago but didn’t really get on with it (it was pretty new so maybe I didn’t give it a chance). Is Threads very photo based like Instagram?
Anyone tried Blue Skies?

No way would I pay. Full of tedious people still moaning about Brexit.

greyhairnomore · 20/09/2023 07:48

I use it
No I won't pay

BestIsWest · 20/09/2023 07:54

I used it mainly for news/politics and the occasional thing ( dogs, bookshops, libraries, history), a few laughs. It used to be great even though it always had its dark side.
Would I pay, even under the micropayment scheme suggested above? Not now, no. A few years ago I might have.

Threads is a difficult one - after reading replies on here I went to get the app and realized I already had it, and it's linked to my Instagram. It looks a bit like Twitter so not all photos like Instagram, but the good thing about Twitter was that I was anonymous on there and could be more political than I would on my other sm.

The demise of Twitter has effectively split the vote so there isn't one similar place any more where you can get the same info.

Only very occasionally visit there now. So it's a hard No from me re paying!

I still love Twitter despite its many many faults. I tried Threads and it's pretty rubbish in comparison snd went back to Twitter within a few days. But when the time comes to pay Musk to use it I will bow out.

MotherEarthisaTerf · 20/09/2023 08:29

No chance. I dont pay for newspaper memberships and theyre worth much more than sad shite ramblings on twitter.

There are 2 social media platforms i would pay for but I wont give them ideas. Twitter and another 2 would just get dumped.

It's hard to say. Former blue tick here with a reasonable about of followers and it's been very useful for work. I haven't paid to have a blue tick in the new twitter/X world, not because of the money but because it's ceased to mean what it used to and it also comes with Musk-y connotations. But I am finding my tweets get less and less interaction which is a shame as it has been very good for my work and my profile. I think I would probably pay, yes, assuming it's a relatively small amount.

If Threads and Bluesky tilt towards an open protocol, then Twitter will totally die. I'm already surprised at the amount of blue tick accounts on there, that I think indicates people that are prepared to spend $8 a month.

I've been on since 2007, I have no huge following or anything. Was very wary of the SILO that it was and is, but have never bothered to move away. Then Musk bought it, and it has felt to me worse and worse. The fun and vibrancy feels removed from the platform. And there's a whole swathe of people that have jumped to other platforms already. Which reduces the value I get from the platform. So I feel I'm getting less and less.

I wouldn't trust it as a communication platform, and barely trust it as an authentication platform anymore. I feel like Musk has ruined a good thing. But something that needed open protocols and breaking out of the SILO it was.

Threads requires you basically uploading loads of personal data for Facebook to harness. Mastodon feels far more wholesome, but you need to find a community to join and you are at the mercy of someone else's server rules. Nothing stopping you creating your own instance. And TBH you could host your own for less than the price of Twitter Blue.

I've gotten to the point, I'm probably going to trash my entire account. If we don't pay do we lose our public archive? Do we use our usernames? I just don't care any more. Musk has failed hugely in his stewardship of the platform, and lost any credibility that he once had.

Hmm. I only have a work account on Twitter, so maybe that would be better than Mastodon for me. Argh. All very annoying.
