When do you start packing for a holiday?

We're off abroad on Saturday and tonight (Monday) I just started putting a few things aside ready to go. I've already checked over some things the last couple of weeks to see if I needed anything new - not much this time. I suppose it's partly excitement in wanting to get ready, partly stress and making sure everything is in order.

For a UK holiday I'd just pack the night before. Of course going in a car makes it easier.

Is this ridiculously early? When do you start?

Literally the day before, I start packing 'in my head' about a week before though!

BotterMon · 18/09/2023 20:53

The night before or on the day if the flight's later in the day. I travelled a lot on business for years so am a dab hand at packing. If I forget anything I can just buy or do without.
I take very little though. Can do a week with just carry on unless it's skiing.

BHRK · 18/09/2023 20:53

I make sure we have things like sun cream etc a few weeks before. Start throwing things in a case about five days before. Clothes don’t get put in until the day before though

MartyFunkhouser · 18/09/2023 20:57

Always the night before we have to get up at some ridiculous hour to get to Heathrow.

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this approach.

I never packed a hospital bag until
I was in advanced labour either. I clearly have a packing problem.

That's very organised!

We are doing carry on only (2 weeks), which has become the norm for us so I feel everything I pack needs to count.

About a week before I'll plan what I'm taking and get anything washed that needs washing, make sure I've got travel adapters, suncream etc. I usually don't actually pack anything until the night before though otherwise I become hyperfixated on it and will pack and unpack and repack over and over again, convinced I've forgotten something.

Rina66 · 18/09/2023 21:00

I start making lists the week before I go, I do day and night outfits (including shoes, bags, underwear & jewellery) when I've finished it's easier to cull!
I also do lists for toiletries, make up and hair - I have standard ones saved to reminders and notes on my phone that I just add to.
I don't put anything in the case until the day before I leave but it's easy once I have the lists to follow.

cruffinsmuffin · 18/09/2023 21:01

I go in a week and have already packed apart from things I need to use between now and going (makeup, hair bits etc). But I'm going to a very hot climate rather than the current UK weather so all of my summer clothes can be packed easily!

Minimum of two days before for me, apart from hair and makeup bits which go in the morning of because I'll have used them. But I am weird like that 😂

AuntieDolly · 18/09/2023 21:02

Just make sure everything is clean then pack the night before

NowWhattt · 18/09/2023 21:02

A few days before. Always always overpack and never ever learn.

Out of curiosity and cos I am nosey where are you off to ?

Enjoy!

toastofthetown · 18/09/2023 21:03

The day before usually. I have a mental list of what I need to take. Unless I’m travelling somewhere remote, I’m not too stressed about it. As long as I have my passport and phone, almost anything else I can either love without or buy there.

gogomoto · 18/09/2023 21:03

Depends, for a weekend away the day before, for a week in the sun, the weekend before, for a cruise a few weeks before I start checking what needs dry cleaning, if things still fit etc and packed roughly 2 weeks out to start the process of removing to meet weight requirements (fly cruise) for a Southampton to Southampton, judging if I need more cases!!!

Hyperthyroidkitty · 18/09/2023 21:06

Currently away abroad. I wrote a list a week before we went ... actually it's an excel spreadsheet. I spent 2 days before pakcing, although I do have a baby and a toddler which made an hour long task take 4 hours and means I have enough other stuff to sink a ship

Floralnomad · 18/09/2023 21:08

The evening before the day before leaving so it gives me one day to buy anything that’s missing or do washing etc . So if I was going on Saturday I would sort stuff out on Thursday .

RuthW · 18/09/2023 21:13

Normally about three weeks before

Peridot1 · 18/09/2023 21:17

I tend to start making sure everything I want to take is washed and ready quite a few days before. Then start laying things out on the spare bed bit by bit. I’m going away on Friday and leaving really early so case will be packed and ready to go the night before.

so far I have put swimwear and cover ups ready to pack. And have started sorting toiletries out.

Am planning on getting more stuff sorted tomorrow afternoon. Will start with a list of clothes I’d like to take and then I’ll whittle it down a bit.

I'm sure we will enjoy it, thanks. Smile

Three weeks before I get a list from my folder of packing lists. I check if I need to buy anything. Ten days before I start to pack everything but clothes. Clothes go in the day before.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 18/09/2023 21:22

The day before but I'll have been planning for weeks.

We're off on Friday and the weather at our destination has suddenly changed for the worse so I need a waterproof re-think 😔

Peepshowcreepshow · 18/09/2023 21:23

Day before. I make a list a few weeks before so long as I have my list and have bought all the bits I needed, it's just an hour of collecting it all together and packing it.
Some bits live in the suitcase, eg euros from previous trips, adapter plugs, beach towels, beach bag, sun hat etc, so that makes things easier.

garlictwist · 18/09/2023 21:23

The day we are going. Takes five mins. I am a very light packer though and hardly take anything. Just the bare minimum of clothes.

SingingSands · 18/09/2023 21:27

I pack the night before. I've usually thought about what to pack for a week before, but don't actually get around to being organised because I hate packing. I need a tight deadline to force me to do it.

Riverlee · 18/09/2023 21:27

A week bf efore I would start to ensure that everything I wanted to take was washed. I’d probably pack 2-3 days B efore, so if there was anything I missed, I’d have time to
buy it, find it, ir wash it.

BluebellsareBlue · 18/09/2023 21:28

I fly tomorrow to Florida, I started packing earlier today and am ready to go. So basically the day/night before

SnapdragonToadflax · 18/09/2023 21:29

The day before. I'll make sure everything is clean and I've found anything that's holiday-specific a week or so before, in case I need to re-buy. But I would hate to have a half-packed case hanging around for days beforehand.
