Anyone have a younger child taller than their older sibling of same sex?

Almost three years between my DS1&2. Totally different body types. Ds1 lean and sporty, and actually probably above average height for boys in his class. Ds2 born huge and stayed huge, head and shoulders above everyone in his class and a bit of chubster. Anyhow ds2 (nearly 8) is just half a head below ds1 (nearly 11). I think he may overtake him, unless ds1 has a puberty growth spurt asap.

anyone else had this? How did you deal with it? I feel sorry for both of them tbh - poor ds1 of younger brother towers over him. Poor ds2 everyone assumes he is older than he is.

same dad btw, who is tall, though ds1 looks like parental side and ds2 looks like my side, facially at least

Yes, I am the youngest and taller than my female siblings. Alternatively, my sister has a DS who is about 6'4" and his younger brother is about 5'11" (both over 18 so not really any growing left to do), totally different builds.

You just accept that people might comment, there's nothing else to do really.

CinnamonBear · 18/09/2023 18:00

I think this is pretty common. My sister is taller than me by three inches and I'm well over average height. The majority of my friends growing up have younger, same sex siblings are taller than they are.

legalseagull · 18/09/2023 18:01

If DS1 is almost 11 he'll be hitting a growth spurt soon.

I'm taller than my older sibling and was from around age 11/12. No one commented. Everyone is different

Yes. The older one stopped growing at about 12, but the younger one kept going and overtook the older one.

The bizarre thing is that now that they are adults, people tend to think that the older one is the younger one, mostly based on height. Confused

Ivebeentogeorgia · 18/09/2023 18:06

My son just turned 11 and is shooting up at a crazy speed. It’ll probably be the same for your ds 1 soon too. My ds is also lean and sporty and so is now a beanpole who never stops eating

MmmALovelyBitOfSquirrel · 18/09/2023 18:09

My friend is the eldest in his family. He is about 5'6. His three younger siblings are all 6ft minimum.

Chasingsquirrels · 18/09/2023 18:14

My ds1 grew early and reached his current (nearly 21 so assume he won't grow any more) height by about 12/13.

Ds2 was always a smaller build, but in the last 4 years has shot up and is now @ 17 taller than ds1.

I don't feel sorry for either of them in relation to their height, it is one of the least interesting things about them.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 18/09/2023 18:15

My youngest sister is 5 inches taller than me. I don’t think it’s that unusual.

bumblefeline · 18/09/2023 18:20

My youngest 5 years age difference is about 5 inches taller than her big sister. I'm taller than my big sister as well.

Smartiepants79 · 18/09/2023 18:25

My younger one is basically the same height as her older sister. She will definitely be taller in the the end. She is also very sporty and will always be skinny. The older is going to have an hour glass figure and will probably have to fight to keep herself from being overweight.
The older is much more body confident and less self conscious. She’s know for years that her sister will be taller, she just doesn’t care. I’m short and have taken great care to always be v.positive about being little!!

Smartiepants79 · 18/09/2023 18:27

I do think it can be harder for boys though.

msmonstera · 18/09/2023 18:29

My younger sister (same parents) overtook me when I was about 13 and she 11. She's just naturally a few inches taller. I didn't like it then but I got over it. We're both well within a normal height range for women.

scrivette · 18/09/2023 18:31

DSS is much much smaller than his older and younger brothers. He is over 18 now and so won't grow any more.

KohlaParasaurus · 18/09/2023 18:33

Yes, my younger sisters are both taller than I am, and my own daughters increase in height according to birth order, with the youngest around 6" taller than the oldest.

rowantree1997 · 18/09/2023 18:37

Yes - 2 DDs completely different body shapes.
Oldest is 5ft 6 and youngest is 5ft 9.

Favouritefruits · 18/09/2023 18:38

I’m female and I was taller than my brother even though he was two years older than me, he hated it I loved it! He’s now 5’10 and I’m about 5’9

ItstimeToMoveagain · 18/09/2023 18:39

My 20 year old is shorter than his 12 year old brother now. 20 year old is about 5'10

ItstimeToMoveagain · 18/09/2023 18:40

My oldest is 6'3 though so ds2 is looking to be the shortest unless ds4 comes in shorter

Passthecoffee · 18/09/2023 18:40

My 9 year old is taller than her 11 year old sister. Has been for around a year or so now.
She's a shoe size bigger as well. The only thing that annoys them is folk mistaking them for twins.

I read something somewhere that said if you see two siblings standing together, the tallest is the younger one (obviously tongue in cheek).

Bubop · 18/09/2023 18:41

My little sister was taller than me from when I was about 10. It was annoying when people assumed she was older than me, but not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

I’d just remind them both that bodies come in all shapes and sizes and they are both perfect in their own way.

garlictwist · 18/09/2023 18:41

My two are 8 and 5. The 5 year old is almost the same height as her older sister and they have the same size feet.

VisionsOfSplendour · 18/09/2023 18:51

Yes, both for my siblings and my children, I didn't know that it was expected that brutg order and height order were meant to be the same

Hibernatalie · 18/09/2023 18:53

Yes, I am youngest and tallest of all 3 of my older sisters

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 18/09/2023 18:55

Not me but my best friend’s daughters. Eldest is 17 and tiny, only just on 5 foot. Youngest is 12 in November and already taller than her sister.
