NHS recruitment question...

So I have been offered a job in another trust and have just had all the ID/OH etc forms to complete on trac come through. It mentions nothing about when my referees will be contacted. For various reasons I don't really want to tell my manager I have another job until I officially hand in my notice (or as close to as possible)...however I feel I would need to give him a heads up that he will have a reference request come through. Does anyone know how quickly references are contacted....should I tell him now but not officially hand in my notice until further down the line? TIA

It was on the application when I last applied (getting on for 3 years ago). Where you record referee details there was a tick box for contacting before or after interview. I ticked after and they didn't make contact until I'd had a verbal offer.
