Anyone met a celebrity and they haven’t been how you expected?

I guess from all the RB threads…a lot of people saying that they are appalled but not exactly surprised.

so I wondered - anybody met anyone well known and they were NOT how you expected? For good or bad?

I had a very strange and brief encounter with one of my favourite actresses a couple of years ago and it was not what I expected at all! Made me realise of course we don’t know these people at all. Any other stories?

I met Dean Cain.
I expected him to be a bit arrogant and stuck up.
But he was just lovely. A good laugh, very warm in person.

Harry Judd and his wife Izzy. So down to earth and friendly. Just lovely.

I can believe this, Harry def my fave member of McFly, just screams wholesomness. I reckon the Fletchers on the other hand could be prickly.

Oooh! I forgot I'd met Delia at the football a few years ago. She is genuinely lovely, hugged everyone, laughed, chatted, and just had a really lovely warmth to her. It didn't feel forced or like she was performing at all. Very infectious giggle too. She is the queen of East Anglia as far as I'm concerned.

So glad Delia is nice. I think she seems nice and is a really interesting person.

Damien Lewis and Helen McCrory - both lovely, she a little 'lovey' but not unpleasantly so (which TBF was not unexpected), he charming and polite.

Matthew McFadyen and Keeley Hawes - less reserved and happier to chat than I expected (we were staying in the same place on holiday so bumped into them / were seated near them several times).

Hugh Masekela - not sure what I expected but he was an absolute delight, happily jammed for us on his trumpet.

William Hague - very chatty and great sense of humour.

Annie Lennox - very brusque, nearly knocked me over and didn't acknowledge / apologise (I was simply standing on the same station platform as her, not star-bothering!)

I once met Ian Redwood (remember him?) politician. They nicknamed him Mr Spock for a good reason: when he looked at me I felt as though my soul had turned to ice.

He was also condescending and superior.

Very sadly, Helen passed away in 2021.

I've also encountered Sarah Beeney, years ago now, but my experience was the opposite. She wasn't 'on duty' for work, it was at a beauty salon - she spent the entire time speaking incredibly loudly on her mobile phone in a quite abrupt manner, full of self-importance in a manner that filled the whole shop. She was also explaining to the person at the other end she'd had to make do with a shorter appointment as the salon wouldn't fit her in (in fact the salon had called and tried to move my appointment (booked weeks previously) I assume for her though they did not say. I'd had to refuse as I had a tiny baby and someone sitting for a fixed short period of time).
So yeah, no consideration for others and an air of distain.

Sarah Beeny's sons are all pompous little nobheads, so it wouldn't surprise me at all that she's the same, like most of these vloggers really

Cake already did, earlier in the thread.

Tenuous... but some years ago I was on a flight from Milan to Heathrow and was surprised to find Kylie Minogue stood next to me at the baggage carousel picking up her own bags.

She did have an entourage with her, and my two recollections were surprise at just how petite she was and that she had not got someone carrying her bags for her, but was with the rest of us collecting her own stuff.

I have met Kylie and she was lovely - funny, open and interesting.

Yes I know, this was in 2016.

I met Salman Rushdie when I was in college and he was arrogant and creepy.

I was gutted. Midnight's Children is possibly my favourite book ever.

I've since learned that his arrogance and creepiness is well documented.

Still gutted about it tbh.

Inthebitterend · 04/10/2023 15:01

I put a wrist band on Ross Kemp at a Robbie Williams concert once. He was very friendly and funny, seemed like a lovely person.

I met Paul McCartney at a book signing for his children's book. I absolutely love him and I was nervous as hell. He was so very kind, he asked me about my daughter and how old she was. He called me darling and I think I nearly died. He also made a point of telling me to go and meet the illustrator of the book who was signing on a table near him. Not in a shitty way but like, saying she is brilliant and I should go and meet her. I thought that was such a nice thing to do. He was also very nice to the people ahead of me in the queue from what I could see/hear.

One of my friends was about 16/17 (and she looked it) and met Marilyn Manson at a signing in London. She was wearing an oversized t-shirt with his face on it. He purposefully asked her to pull it tight then signed directly across her breasts (on the tshirt obviously). It creeped her out for ages, understandably.

Whoa there lady! Greg is mine!

I think you'll find he's mine!

Jeremy Paxman. Met him through work a few times. Thought he'd be arrogant and rude but he was absolutely delightful - really polite, friendly and just generally really understated and happy to chat to everyone.

Jeremy Vine on the other hand was quite rude and entitled and would barely give the people he was working with the time of day.

Crazyjanes · 04/10/2023 15:10

Jim Davidson is an absolute arse when drunk. Never seen him sober and we used to share a local so I strongly suspect he has an alcohol issue.

usernother · 04/10/2023 15:11

@BigTedLittleTedCardboardBox Sad to hear about Steve Coogan. He seems like he'd be lovely, but impressions can be very misleading.

Steve Coogan is renowned for being a massive arse. I've heard reports from people who've worked him with say he's not a pleasant person.

BrokenBonesStixStones · 04/10/2023 15:11

I met Ian Somerhalder, he was utterly charming and very charismatic. Lovely man & drop dead gorgeous swoon

Do you mean John Redwood?

He’s a condescending twat, but that’s not really a surprise. I used to live in his constituency and he came canvassing for votes before one general election. Refused to speak to me as my parents weren’t in. I was 22 at the time (so well past voting age) and much more politically engaged than they were.

Tokyo2005 · 04/10/2023 15:18

Reece Shearsmith - I spent an evening sitting next to him at an event and he was absolutely lovely, kind, humble and interested! I came away quite the fan!

KevinDeBrioche · 04/10/2023 15:24

I’m so glad Andy Murray is lovely. My friend went on a hen weekend and Kim Murray was one of the other guests, she said she was brilliant, loads of fun and really down to earth.

George and Amal are really fab . kind, intelligent, engaged.

DH has worked with David Attenborough and says he’s brilliant. Works SO hard and wants to really understand everything he’s presenting.

Steve Backshall also lovely, exactly as he is on TV

DH was once on a flight with Noel Gallagher over, very unassuming and polite if people approached. I was jealous of that I bloody loved oasis.

Geri H was awful when I saw her at an event, pulled the ‘don’t you know I am’ etc. ugh. I cannot bear her husband either the pair of them seem so arrogant.

Lorrymum · 04/10/2023 15:31

Jim Dale from the old Carry On films. I was on holiday in New York with my sister. We were in Central Park and saw a man walking 2 beautiful dobermans. We admired them from a distance and the owner starting yelling "I don't do autographs or photographs" We hadn't realised it was Jim Dale and when we pointed out we were admiring the dogs and had no interest in him he slunk off!

MrsJamin · 04/10/2023 15:34

I briefly met Derren Brown. He was normally dressed (no pointy lapelled suit!) and he was genuinely really lovely and down to earth, not at all that kind of magician/spooky/you're-looking-into-my-soul-and-analysing-me person I expected!

onwardandupwards · 04/10/2023 15:34

Jennie McAlpine ( fizz from coronation Street) absolutely lovely, genuinely nice person.
