Anyone met a celebrity and they haven’t been how you expected?

I guess from all the RB threads…a lot of people saying that they are appalled but not exactly surprised.

so I wondered - anybody met anyone well known and they were NOT how you expected? For good or bad?

I had a very strange and brief encounter with one of my favourite actresses a couple of years ago and it was not what I expected at all! Made me realise of course we don’t know these people at all. Any other stories?

I met Judy Blume and she was really softly spoken, kind and interesting.

Oh my gosh where did you meet her?

Middleagedmeangirls · 04/10/2023 10:47

We saw Mary Berry give a cooking demo at a food show once. She was shockingly rude to the two assistants helping her. DH and I were gasping out loud at her bad manners. If that's how unpleasant she is when miked up and in front of an audience I dread to think what she's like behind the scenes.

a couple of weeks later DD and I went to see Nadiya Hussein at a talk and book signing. She is every bit as charming and unassuming and funny as she is on tv.

An American TV personality who has the reputation to be mister nice-guy, family man, the kindest, most genuine. I really used to admire him and buy the image. I met him through work and saw quite a few times for a few months.

He did not do anything to me nor was he rude or anything but there were a few times were his mask fell for a second or 2 and once I saw it, I could not unsee it. I had the worst feeling being around him.

It might sound (extremelly overly) dramatic but if he is ever arrested for being the next Ted Bundy or for having a cabin in the wood where he keeps women to hunt them at night for fun, I would not be one bit surprised. And no one would ever believe me (nor should they, at the end of the day, I don't have any evidence and he did nothing to me).

There was just something horribly wrong about him.

Edited

I'm intrigued ... late night talk show?

Jo brand gave me a very dirty look at a firework display when I was about 14/15 and she was there with her children. Maybe she felt defensive cos they were there but I hadn’t stared or said anything to her we just locked eyes breifly. It may have been an unfortunate misunderstanding but I remember wondering what her issue with me was

Guy Martin - really lovely, chatted about his dog Nigel and his partner Sharon.
Martin Shaw - really lovely gentleman
Lee Ingleby - So friendly and happy to chat and take photos
Prince Philip (RIP) really lovely and funny too
Beth Tweddle - really nice and happy
Ricky Tomlinson - really lovely and so happy to stop for a chat and photos
Peter Davison - seemed happy enough to meet fans and was quite chatty too

I think I've been quite lucky to have good experiences with most of the celebs I've met so far.

Met Julia Donaldson at an event she did. She was all sweetness and light to anyone important, but her mask slipped a lot, and she was rude and dismissive to many parents and children, including my then 5 year old child who loved her books and was so excited to see her. Funnily enough we went off her books after that.

WolfFoxHare · 04/10/2023 11:22

I met Adam Rutherford (author, geneticist, podcaster - so not an A-list celeb) and he was absolutely lovely, really friendly and chatty. I think he was delighted to be recognised actually.

Also he's gorgeous in person.

Shopper727 · 04/10/2023 11:28

I am so pleased to read this!

Amanda Holden. Always assumed she'd be a diva. Got stuck in Departures with her when our flight was delayed. We ended up drinking coffee together and she was just lovely. Very chatty and down to Earth. Complimented me on my handbag and happy to have a selfie. Just the kind of woman you'd want as a mate.

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 04/10/2023 11:46

Duncan James is possibly the loveliest person I've ever met, famous or otherwise.
Greg Davies hosted a travel industry awards I was at once and hung out with everyone afterwards, very down to earth and incredibly patient with everyone who wanted a photo.
For the oldies amongst us, Bobby Davro came to the golf club I worked at as a teen and was hugely lovely to everyone there (his then-wife not so much..!!)

What a shame, surely as a children's author she should realise that the kids and parents are the "important" people

TheBirdintheCave · 04/10/2023 11:53

My husband met Ronan Keating and Anton Du Beke when he was photographing a charity event. He said they were both absolutely lovely gentlemen.

I met the comic poet Pam Ayres once when I was about 11. My parents took me to a show of hers as I wrote comic poetry too. I excitedly told her this and she didn't even really acknowledge that I'd said anything. I left feeling really deflated.

LeatherJacketWedding · 04/10/2023 11:53

Harry Judd and his wife Izzy. So down to earth and friendly. Just lovely.

JimnJoyce · 04/10/2023 11:56

So happy to hear all the lovely Greg Davis comments as I have a huge crush on him.
Celebs i've met -

Phil Collins - knob
Julie walters - lovely

JimnJoyce · 04/10/2023 11:56

oops pressed too soon

Tony Iommi - pleasant
Murray Walker - best day ever

Puddlesandbubbles · 04/10/2023 12:00

Met a few:

Bruce Forsyth bought me a lemonade in a golf club when I was a child. He was so kind to me and indulged me when I told him "nice to see you". I was devastated when he passed.

George and Amal Clooney were unbelievably polite and kind to the staff in a village pub. Didn't speak to them personally but they seemed lovely.

I competed against Lenny Henny and Dawn French's daughter in a school athletics event. He was cheering louder than any other parent and chatting with everyone around, she seemed annoyed about being there, let alone people wanting to speak to her.

A friend served Orlando Bloom in Waitrose. She wasn't sure it was him so asked for ID. He laughed and handed it over. Had a chat with her and waited for her to get her phone from the back for a selfie.

AtlasOfBirds · 04/10/2023 12:01

@SurpriseItsMeHorseyNeighNeigh Honestly, all US talk show hosts give me the creeps, it’s all surface with them (particularly Conan and the two Jimmies). They might be the loveliest people in the world who have never harmed a fly, but something about the nature of their jobs (having to present yourself so precisely with a different guest every few minutes) means there’s something hollow and creepy to me.

moonlight1705 · 04/10/2023 12:11

Met Ed Balls at work and had always thought of him ad a bit of a clown. He is charming, interesting and has a really good knowledge of our work. Also met Samuel West who was quiet but delightful.

At a different place of work, we had Father Brown doing some filming. The actor John Light was in this episode and I have always liked him. In real life he was even more stunning, I've never seen such a beautiful person, also very sweet and friendly.

Tyson Fury is a chauvinistic pig. Met him on two occasions (the first I had nonclue who he was and had to Google him) and he's just extremely rude. Got some of my mates kicked out of a club because one of them wouldn't dance for him 😳

Pretty much what you'd expect from someone related to domestic violence and homophobic and sexist comments.

IQ must be in double figures at the most.

Mmhmmn · 04/10/2023 12:15

That behaviour doesn't sound at all like Andy Murray, and he's still playing tennis, not an ex-tennis player ...

CarrieMoonbeams · 04/10/2023 12:18

This was a long time ago, probably 2012 I think, but DH and I were on a tour of the BBC studios in London with a group of young adults with SEN.

We saw a good few famous faces in passing, they all gave our group a wave or a smile (the ones we saw were either having their lunch or obviously prepping for work, so tbf they didn't chat but that was absolutely fine).

As we were gathered in the Reception area at the end, Trevor Eve walked in. He was on TV at the time, with a programme we really enjoyed, so everyone was quite excited to see him. He totally blanked our group - not a smile, hello or anything, just looked over the top of our heads with a horrible sneer on his face 😞. Our group was really disappointed. Broke my heart when one of the girls said in a hopeful wee voice later "maybe he just didn't see us?". Couldn't have really missed us, tbh 😢

mrlistersgelfbride · 04/10/2023 12:21

Heard from some friends who worked with Craig Charles that he was rude and dismissive. My ex colleague met him at a comedy event and he touched her breast unexpectedly.
Gutted as he was my first tv crush (see username).

Jack Black came into where I worked when I was young. I was too shy to go up to him as thought he might be rude but he was sweet and funny.

Sarah Beeney. Absolutely lovely. Had to deal with her in a professional capacity a few years ago, very nice to all members of staff, especially junior ones who most people treat like shit. Her husband was very pleasant too

I've also encountered Sarah Beeney, years ago now, but my experience was the opposite. She wasn't 'on duty' for work, it was at a beauty salon - she spent the entire time speaking incredibly loudly on her mobile phone in a quite abrupt manner, full of self-importance in a manner that filled the whole shop. She was also explaining to the person at the other end she'd had to make do with a shorter appointment as the salon wouldn't fit her in (in fact the salon had called and tried to move my appointment (booked weeks previously) I assume for her though they did not say. I'd had to refuse as I had a tiny baby and someone sitting for a fixed short period of time).
So yeah, no consideration for others and an air of distain.

AffIt · 04/10/2023 12:27

I met Danny Dyer at a mutual friend's party and really liked him - he was very funny, intelligent and a great conversationalist: genuinely interested in other people and listening to them, rather than holding the floor.
