Anyone met a celebrity and they haven’t been how you expected?

I guess from all the RB threads…a lot of people saying that they are appalled but not exactly surprised.

so I wondered - anybody met anyone well known and they were NOT how you expected? For good or bad?

I had a very strange and brief encounter with one of my favourite actresses a couple of years ago and it was not what I expected at all! Made me realise of course we don’t know these people at all. Any other stories?

Talking of the Kemps, they used to live near us. (Think they've moved). Saw Martin a lot in our hardware shop (don't ask..) and he was also very friendly.

He once inadvertently gatecrashed a friend's pre birthday party drinks in a local pub. My drunk friend kept gushing how much she loved him in Spandau Ballet and he was so sweet to her (while I swallowed down severe embarrassment on her behalf).

@hdbs17 I knew you were going to say Andrew Castle! Was in a restaurant with friends and he was on a table next to us - he was awful. Rude and dismissive to staff, loud and leery.

Went to see Mark Simmons last week and he was lovely (not that I expected him not to be!) - came round to the doors as everyone was leaving to shake hands / take photos, etc.

Joanne Lumley: very petite, almost prim, very reserved. We have met her several times in private settings rather than media/showbiz related.

Terry Wogan: huge, handsome and charming with a twinkle in his eye.

Michael Caine: quiet and charming with an extraordinary presence.

Alan Sugar: a perfect gentleman who is nothing like his TV persona (and he pays his bills on time)

Tinie Tempah - smells beautiful and is a lovely man

Professor Green - surprisingly shy

Bez and Shaun Ryder - very funny, great double act

Bobby Gillespie- absolute arse

Mani from Primal Scream - lovely and humble

Mick Fleetwood - complete "don't you know who I am" diva

Sam Smith - twunt

VisitationRights · 04/10/2023 07:55

William Shatner - self important, entitled prick! Really rude to people he saw as less than himself. It was a high pressure situation but he was downright nasty to everyone.

Sam Waterston - lovely, polite, friendly. It was the type of celebrity encounter you would want, just a pleasant person who was genuinely friendly.

mangochops · 04/10/2023 08:10

Katie Price- was horrible, arrogant, rude and stared daggers at all the women in the room

Jamie Cullen- absolutely delightful, one of the kindest people I've ever met

One of my friends works in the theatre.
Patrick Stewart- complete lecherous groper, lots of slimy innuendos to women
Sheridan smith- lovely
Adrian Lester- lovely

RecklessBlackberries · 04/10/2023 08:16

Jennifer Saunders- very rude. I worked in a bank actioning account closures. Her banker had messed up and I had to call her. She kept telling me there was no error and the account was already closed. It kept popping up in my list of cases to resolve so we had horrible conversations about five times before she actually fixed the issue.

Will Young- met him twice and both times he was an arse. Once in a small bar with a narrow passage behind the barstools. Rather than ask me to move slightly, he violently shoulder barged through, pushing me right into the bar. Another time we saw him at a student night in a gay club (he would have been at least 30 then). I happened to turn my head to the person next to me and must have had some flicker of recognition because he went "NO I WONT TAKE A PHOTO".

LowbrowVictoriana · 04/10/2023 08:19

I’d forgotten about Rhod Gilbert. He was sitting next to DH and I on a flight from Cardiff to Edinburgh some years ago. Chatted to us all the way. He was hilarious and genuinely lovely.

George Michael - was very humble, almost shy and vulnerable. I thought he would be this 'big icon' but in fact I just wanted to mother him!
Jonathon Ross - always thought he was a bit of a big head and show off, but when I met him and his wife they were very down to earth, clearly cared deeply for each other and very normal.

Readytoplay · 04/10/2023 09:02

Nicest (although haven’t met many and none have been awful) I’ve met is Linda Robson, me and my friend met her outside a cafe after showing an interest about her dog (yes, I am a dog lover: which I know is a big sin on here, I pretended I didn’t know who she was (ie didn’t talk about Birds/her career), although. My friend really didn’t know who they were. she was very pleasant and friendly. We spoke for about 3 minutes.

MrsMitford3 · 04/10/2023 09:04

Stayed a couple of times at a resort in Sardinia (about 20 years ago now) which was full of PL footballers and minor celebs-loads of the footballers so friendly and down to earth-nice to see them with their kids. Ainsley Harriott there and he was very unassuming and chilled.
However Carol Voderman walked around with a face like a slapped arse-barged down the path from the kids club expecting everyone to jump out of her way. She was very arrogant and self important. Not nice at all.

MojoMoon · 04/10/2023 09:05

James Cracknell - awful, snobbish, clearly only interested in talking to rich men or stunningly beautiful women. Everyone else was clearly unworthy.

It is no surprise to me that he is standing to be a Tory MP.

MrsMitford3 · 04/10/2023 09:07

Also saw Sarah Ferguson in Harrods in the 1990's-IIR this was around the toe sucking era? and we were in the book dept. She went sweeping through with staff flocking around her carrying things etc and she yelled over and snapped her fingers over her head at the woman who was at the till ringing us up-the woman stopped helping us and ran to her!!!!!
Everyone was tutting-she was so rude

DB works with a few celebs for his work in tv and film, recent ones he’s filmed and were lovely including Damien Lewis, Dominic West and Guy Pearce, also the English boy in Derry Girls (forget his name!), Bradley Walsh, Tinchy Stryder etc.

I used to work and go clubbing in London, didn’t so much meet celebs (not that I remember but I must’ve seen them) but saw them a lot, Lily Allen, Zoe Ball, Denise Van Outen. Bjork in a wedding dress in a bar where celebs hang out without being disturbed.

My ex platonic male best friend is best mates with Brand New Heavies and Jay Kay, I’ve met them all, they’re fine.

Gemma Collins pushed past me rudely, like shoved me, no apology and a really hard look on her face in a Towie bar in Romford.

DM used to work in advertising and met loads of people, friends were Roger Schlesinger, Jan Pienkoeski, Dave Allen and she met Roger Moore and others. DM made dresses and gave Twiggy one, no payment etc so DM thought Twiggy was a bitch!

My auntie was a successful 70s model, one of her best friends at 15 (there’s a really sweet photo of them together) was Robert Palmer, she started modelling at 14 so he was sort of like an older brother to her. She met loads but I’ve got no idea if she thought they were nice or not, she did do a Sunday newspaper magazine shoot with Queen when Bohemian Rhapsody came out.

QuitMoaning · 04/10/2023 09:18

I was on a flight with Noel Gallagher recently which was severely delayed and had some other challenges.

We didn’t speak to him ourselves but, despite the delays, he was good natured about being approached, particularly a group of young women who were very excited to talk to him.

We were all tired and frustrated yet he was still smiling at people so hats off to him (he did smile and say sorry to me when he thought he stood on my foot on the bus, but he hadn’t).

Lemmy from Motörhead. A real gent!

Met Lemmy at a bar in Camden - really lovely and had a chat.
John Virgo (snooker) was rude and unfriendly when I waited on his table in a restaurant.
Craig Charles was quiet and polite when I waited on his table - apparently he was a bit of a dick once he was in the pub across the road and had had a few!
In the same restaurant (it was quirky and near local film studios) Bobby Davro bought in his family for Sunday lunch and fell asleep in a corner!
I missed the day that Ben Elton and Kenneth Brannagh were eating together - apparently they were very polite.
Mel Gibson was in the sister restaurant up the road (much posher) and didn't say much so can't gauge his character! Quite small though.
The Green Goddess Diana Moran was a regular and so lovely - liked to sit near the tills so that she could chat to us - always came in for the early bird 30% off sitting! So beautiful in RL too.
The lovely Sir Geoff Hurst was a regular too and really friendly. Signed an autograph for me for my DH - still have it somewhere. Its the only person I ever asked!!

Floopyfloop · 04/10/2023 09:20

I met Judy Blume and she was really softly spoken, kind and interesting.

Is the tennis player Andy Murray?
Many years ago I had the misfortune of meeting Jim Davidson at an event and he was exactly what I expected!

My dad used to be quite friendly with JD and On a couple of occasions my mum and dad went out for dinner with him, my mum said he made some vile sexual comments about her and was unbelievably arrogant.

SoShallINever · 04/10/2023 09:26

We were standing next to Tyson Fury (and his little girl) at a motorway station coffee shop recently. Recognised him instantly, he is absolutely huge, I'm not remotely into boxing but that man is HOT.
He was very polite and worked hard to keep his little girl entertained in a long queue.

Unicorn34 · 04/10/2023 09:26

My DH sat next to Robson Green on a flight from Cumbria to Heathrow. Said he was lovely and chatted a lot, until his manager came over and his personality changed totally.
DH also said he saw Des Lynam at a football match once and he was really rude and shoved past people getting through the seating.

A friend of mine met Jennifer Saunders and Ade. Her and her husband are big fans and tried to give them some space as they were also on holiday but they did say hello as they left the park.

Ade was really polite but they did say that Jennifer was ready offhand and seemed really cross that they had said hello.

it’s a shame as I love her comedy!
