Partners home smells musty

Hi,

I’ve moved in with my partner and he’s not the most domesticated. This has been a struggle as I was taught to clean from a young age and I’m generally very house proud. He’s never been shown how to properly clean things so I’ve shown him how to do certain things. He’s been very receptive and is a lot better now. He’s not a slob per se but has slobbish tendencies which are thankfully improving after living alone for some years. His home tends to get dusty which aggravates my allergies. He also wasn’t properly ventilating by opening windows as he didn’t want his pet to escape. Pet is no longer with us so the animal smell has gone but there’s a musty odour that persists. We’re going to do a deep clean this week so I was wondering if there’s anything in particular we can do to get rid of it once and for all and quickly? I really don’t like the smell and it clings to my clothes and hair. We’ve cleaned the carpet and the sofa and I’ve bought a steamer in the hope that will help. Also going to get a second dehumidifier for downstairs as we dry clothes indoors due to no garden. I’ve checked and there’s no mould. Any tips would be greatly appreciated

Oops, I had a typo in my earlier post. Fixed it for myself.

Once you've got the strongest extractor fan you can buy, inform your boyfriend that he needs to do a 90 degree wash for all the towels with biological powder and a dose of antibacterial liquid.

This made me chuckle 😂 to be fair he does most of the laundry

it maybe that the pet smell has got into the furniture and soft furnishings....i know no matter how cleaning we do our fabric sofa smells of dog...and will eithrr hsve to be replaced and/or completely re upholstered..

would recommend an air filter .. we use 'winx' brand after youve both.. given the place a good clean have noticed that really makes a difference to genersl smells and a dehumidifier if nowhere to dry clothes... waeco low energy is great

Ok - one more question. From the sounds of it you have already done a lot of cleaning. Has it got better for all that? Or not really?

Because there are two options really (ok there are infinite options but bear with me!) One is that there are lots of little things causing the smell and as you work your way through them you will slowly improve it until it is eventually gone. The other is that there is one big source and all the cleaning does is clean the things that were made smelly by the source but will then get smelly again.

It got a lot better after an initial big clean but it’s back. He’s conscious of security so doesn’t leave the windows open as long as I would. I’m going to tell him that airing is imperative so we have to leave them open for longer. We have a ring doorbell anyway so nothing to really worry about security wise.

Thank you I’ll look into the purifier. Plan is to get a new sofa around Christmas but if the smell persists then we may have to buy sooner

Op, folks are just going on what you wrote. Honestly a home so smelly it actually lingers in your hair and clothes as you said, is really quite extreme. Hence the reactions.

we bought our home from some elderly people who had lived here over 4 decades. It had that musty smell. Not so much it was in our clothes and hair, but I could smell it really strongly, when I came in, or walked into different rooms. I was also paranoid by it and had diffusers, candles etc to try to disguise it as we dealt with it. No amount of airing out would have got rid of it, but airing was also important. I kept saying god my house smells 😂

it took not just replacing the soft furnishings like curtains and blinds, which were old and smelly, having the carpets cleaned professionally, and our clean furniture like sofas being brought in etc, but also redecorating, the walls had not been painted in decades, and walls do get dirty. Take a wet cloth over one and see. We also had to replace the kitchen and bathroom, not just because of the smell, but due to age and lack of function.

I guess now it just smells of us, but I’m still very sensitive to it, and usually have essential oil diffusers on , pumping out vanilla, ylang ylang, amber, bergamot etc. whatever mix I fancy that day, and then light scented candles in the evening. I also have the carpets cleaned professionally annually, same as blinds and curtains, and regularly launder the cushion covers, throws etc.

so I do get why it’s an issue for you, where I part ways though is I’d struggle to be with someone whose house left a bad smell on my hair and clothes, without ensuring that was dealt with before I moved in or was going to spend any time there.

you will get there, but it will take time, money and effort.

No we have laminate flooring and carpet on the stairs. Not sure if we can lift it but I’ll ask

You could see of someone you know has (or if there is a professional company that offers the service) a fibre optic camera. if you can get it under the floor to see if there is sign of damp from something. Or if things have gone under the floor and died.

Sometimes you need to find people who know how to do a really good check.

It is most likely mould getting on walls and soft furnishings, but it doesn't hurt to check where it is hard to see (also just to know everything is ok where you don't normally see).

If he owns and it is a long term option is it possible to fit MVHR? circulating air constantly and being better for heat efficiency.

I’ll post on whatever board I like thanks. I didn’t realise the board determined whether you respond like a twat or not?

You sound delightful, OP, if very defensive.

Whereas you have come across as the exact polar opposite of ‘delightful’, @SparklingLime . Hmm Hmm Hmm

Having fun, are you?

How on earth does it matter how his cat died? 🤣🤣🤣 why would someone be interested in that?!

Did it die?

Wash carpets professionally
wash sofa coverings in the wash or get done professionally
get oven cleaned professionally
clean washing machine (high temperature empty cycle) & wipe down inside drum / plastic bit tray etc
wash curtains
wash coats etc
wash bed linen/ cushion covers (basically anything that is fabric
wash duvet / pillows
dust entire house
Clean bathroom / kitchen - put bleach down sink/ toilets
wash bins
Keep all windows open
buy a diffuser/ candles

Get someone else to do all these things - why should you be picking up the slack as a result of his ineptness. You'll be setting yourself up as a char lady for ever.

DuploTrain · 18/09/2023 16:26

If it’s the kitchen, wipe down all the cupboards, obviously clean the bins, floor etc.

Make sure the extractor fan is working properly - take the filter out and clean all the grease off it. And use it consistently.

DuploTrain · 18/09/2023 16:26

And clean inside the oven, dishwasher and washing machine.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/09/2023 16:49

What on earth was the point of the thread???

Cleaning tips.

OP, if there was a pet in the house then get some pet odour spray, it breaks down all the enzymes. Spray and leave it to dry.

Janieforever · 18/09/2023 16:51

When we have our carpets done, the machine is something like this, it is waist high on a tall man and about 3 foot wide, it’s nothing like the little rug doctor things you get, and it’s so worth doing.

we have it done annually now and it’s not so bad , we are a shoes off house, but let guests wear shoes and have friends and their dogs visit, but the water is just a bit dirty rather than muddy brown, but there is still a surprising amount of dirt that comes out. And these machines get the dirt out and importantly nearly all the water used, leaving it almost dry and not just pushing some of the dirty water back into the fibres leaving it wet.

we also have the stairs, sofas and rugs, pouffes/fabric stools done at rhe same time.

I’d ask in local Facebook for recommendations op. Worth doing.

Could it be the washing machine? We thought our last one was OK but it’s not until it stopped spinning and we got a new one that we realised that it hadn’t been rinsing very well, even with an extra rinse added. Our clothes are so much cleaner now it’s amazing. Always did hot washes too so it wasn’t for lack of that.

If it’s in the building then check backs of wardrobes and drawer bases, books and bookcases etc. I hope you don’t find any damp there but it’s a prime place if the building is humid and prone to cold or cold walls.

Have a proper check for leaks under the bath and in kitchen cupboards etc. look for signs of damp under the window/ window sills etc. Check guttering and roof.

if it’s in the clothes then they will probably never recover 😢

Oh god this thread is worrying me as I've got a (very lovely) indoor rescue cat who is just terrified of the outdoors! So I can only open the windows of the rooms she's in on latch for her safety now.
Shes too scared to eat her food in the kitchen, has to be on a mat in the lounge under the stairs.
She loves lying all over the sofa and carpet.
I clean out her litter tray every time she uses it!

I can't smell any bad smells in here but I'm worried that all my friends are too polite to say that they can!!

Oh no please don’t worry! To be honest most households with pets will always have a smell but there’s levels to it. If you’re on top of cleaning I’m sure it doesn’t smell bad. My friend had a cat but she cleaned very often and any smells o noticed were always very mild

Possibly, it’s an old washing machine that does need replacing. The clothes never feel fresh after washing unless I use a ton of ecover as it has a nice strong fragrance. I’ve checked and there’s no mould but our second dehumidifier has arrived today so I’ll see if that helps. We’re cleaning all kitchen cupboards this evening inside and out and steaming them so fingers crossed that helps
